Flat Belly Diet Family Cookbook Review

Flat Belly Diet Family Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Absolutely LOVE The this cookbook. It is filled with new recipes that are very kid friendly. My kids have already attached post-it notes to half of the recipes in the book (to mark what they want me to make). We have had the cookbook only a few days and have already made four recipes. We loved them all and can't wait to make more this weekend. It will certainly make the FBD easier for me to follow!
If you a Flat Belly Dieter, you should be aware that only a few recipes give the FBD serving size as a measure (ie. 1 cup = a FBD serving). For most recipes, you are going to have to divide the dinner into serving sizes (usually 4), take out your serving and then feed your family.

Zone Meals in Seconds : 150 Fast and Delicious Recipes for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Review

Zone Meals in Seconds : 150 Fast and Delicious Recipes for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Few books prompt me to want to TELL THE WORLD because it may make a big difference in the quality of life of anyone who reads it. This is the first time that I have tried the Zone diet and fish oil supplements so it was all news to me and makes sense. I don't usually buy recipe books but this is more of a guide to balanced eating using raw foods, canned/frozen food, and even restaurant visits. The authors seem to realize that I don't have the time or talent to deal with exotic food preparation. Rather than a long list of food to avoid, this book explains which foods are good, better, and best along with balanced quantities.
Don't underestimate the health effects of the right food if you are currently in pain or taking any medications this book could change your life! A high cholesterol report and watching Morgan Spurlock's movie, Super Size Me, prompted me to pursue some changes in my diet. In the month since entering the Zone I have discontinued Sudafed use (after years on it) and my husband is off of glucosamine and pain free. Plus, we are not hungry, have energy, and sleep better than before. This book ended the confusion I felt about what to eat. I found it very helpful.

The Brazilian Bikini Body Program: 30 Days to a Sexier Body and Mind Review

The Brazilian Bikini Body Program: 30 Days to a Sexier Body and Mind
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pretty much the whole thing is just raving about about how wonderful and exotic the Brazilian lifestyle and culture is.
I suppose the diet would work if you followed it and the recipes are interesting and tasty sounding. I'm going to try a few of those. But the workouts are silly and I don't believe you could really change your body by following them.
I think if you're new to exercise, you'll have trouble following them correctly and if you're someone who is already active, these won't do anything for you and challenge you. This is my opinion as a fitness professional who guides people who are new to exercise through some of the simplest movements on a day-to-day basis. It is an informed opinion.
I found the book really fluffy and disappointing.
Want a brazilian bikini body? Follow the diet and incorporate some barbell squats into your routine. That'll do it.

Betty Crocker The 300 Calorie Cookbook: 300 tasty meals for eating healthy every day (Betty Crocker Books) Review

Betty Crocker The 300 Calorie Cookbook: 300 tasty meals for eating healthy every day (Betty Crocker Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everytime I swear I won't cram another cookbook onto my bookshelf I leaf through something that seems to stand out among the other cookbooks I have, or is complete enough that it allows me to give away several cookbooks so that one can take its place.
This is one such cookbook.
Very extensive cookbook with around 300 recipes, it's divided into the following categories:
Center of the Plate
Savory Skillet Meals
Casseroles and Pot Pies
Meatless Main Dishes
Sandwiches, Salads, and Pizzas
Soups, Stews, and Chilies
Slow Cooker Suppers
Grilling Good and Easy
30 Min or Less
Cooking for Two
Which is why I say it's like having several cookbooks...if I'm in the mood to grill, I can pull this out and do it with fewer calories, if I have limited time, it still has recipes for me, if I don't want leftovers I use the cooking for two section, and I love the slow cooker suppers for those days when I want to throw some things into a pot in the morning and come home to a hot cooked meal, making me feel like my private chef slaved all day to have dinner ready and waiting! :-)
Here are a few examples of some of the recipes. I've found them to include easy-to-locate ingredients and be family pleasers so that the rest of the house doesn't even have to know it's "diet" food since they tend to be good comfort foods:
Honey Glazed chicken breasts
Baked Oregano Chicken (this is a great one at only 180 calories)
Smothered Cajun Pork Chops
Beef and Peppers with Biscuits
Cheese Enchiladas
Philly Steak Casserole
Cheese Filled Tortellini Soup
Black Bean Taco Salad
Baked Chicken and Rice with Autumn Veggies
Country French Beef Stew
Chicken and Dumplings
Creamy Crabmeat Au Gratin
Tex Mex Scrambled Eggs
Cajun Oven Fried Trout
Grilled Pizza
Tex Mex Meat Loaf
There are also lots of ethnic dishes thrown in if you, for example, are in the mood for Chinese food, Indian food, etc. And the meatless maindishes will make even a hearty carnivore forget what's missing.
This book, unlike most of my diet cookbooks, contains FULL nutritionals, even the protein, sodium etc. If you are following Weight Watchers you'll know the fat and fiber of every dish going in.
The instructions are super simple. I cook all the time but even if you have only made Kraft mac and cheese up til now, you'll not skip a beat.
NEGATIVES: I try to leave negatives on any review even if I love something since nothing is perfect but this book is jam packed with recipes, many with calories even in the one hundreds and they are easy to prepare, healthy, and tasty and have full nutritionals. That's an A+ cookbook for me. I'f I had to say something others might not like, I might say it doesn't contain photos for all recipes (it does have several photos, just not for all) but bear in mind the book is already at almost 400 pages with its tips and recipes so you might not fit it into your cookbook holder if got any bigger. :-)
I love this one. It's both rare and well-done.
p.s. My calorie goal when I am dieting is 1250 calories per day. (This was scientifically figured out for me with a bodybugg. I'm a weight loss coach.) I burn 1950 calories per day usually in just normal activities so this deficit enables me to lose well if I also increase my activity( a little over 2 lbs per week) since a deficit of 3,500 calories equals a loss of one pound. (Your body uses fat stores for energy when it has a deficit.) Your calorie needs will vary of course based upon your height and weight and activity but there are several places online that you can get an estimate of what your body uses in order to figure out the deficit needed for weight loss even without a bodybugg. (All weight loss is, afterall, is taking in less calories than you burn.) This is great if you want to eat fresh food yet measure exactly what you are taking in as well.
But I'm not always on a diet. And to be honest, I use this book even when I am not on a diet. I like the recipes. I just get to eat more!
This keeps me satisfied and it's more of a food change than a diet.

I was so excited to see that Dana Carpender was coming out with a 15 minute recipe book. I have the 500 low carb recipes book and am tremendously pleased with it, but this new book is so awesome that although I have used my 500 recipes book religiously for months, it has sat on the shelf for the last week. I have made a different recipe every night this week using this 15 minute recipe book and am enthralled. I've made Sour Cream Ham Supper (my husband loved this), Spanish Rice (scrumptuous, I think I found my new favorite), Beef and Artichoke Skillet (fabulous),Ham and Beans Skillet (so easy, and absolutely delicious), and tomorrow I'm making Pepperoncini Beef; I can't wait. I've never enjoyed cooking so much. All the recipes are so fast and easy. So far, they've all been extremely tasty, too. Dana, keep up the good work.

The Raw 50: 10 Amazing Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners, Snacks, and Drinks for Your Raw Food Lifestyle
Average Reviews:

Yes, this book includes a Raw Food Brownie recipe. The texture is variable, depending on your kitchen equipment, and the taste isn't precisely right, but its DARN good. To be truthful, i bought this book for the brownie recipe.
This book contains basic information you will need to start your raw food life, including the basics of sprouting, soaking, making nut milks, and so on. It includes most of the information from her other book "Eating in the Raw" in a condensed form. It also has far more recipes, and fewer testimonials and "how i got here" stories.
some of her recipes call for a food dehydrator, or serious prep time (a common problem with the higher end Raw food recipes) but there are many items in this book that can be made with no equipment of note, or a blender alone.
The Juices and smoothies section is excellent, if basic for someone who is experienced in Raw Food living. The recipes are clear and do not assume a great deal of expert knowledge. Most of the main course type recipes are for items that replicate cooked foods, like mock lasagna, and this is true of her desert recipes as well.
The book has an extraordinarily high number of deserts and mock "cooked" meals that are still within the capabilities of a typical raw food beginner, and may be especially helpful to someone trying to make dishes that won't scare off the more conventional eaters in a family.

Blender Baby Food: Over 125 Recipes for Healthy Homemade Meals Review

Blender Baby Food: Over 125 Recipes for Healthy Homemade Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I didn't get this book till my baby was over 10 months old, so I'm not sure what I'm about to say will apply to younger babies just starting on solids.
I love this book! My baby had been eating table food for a while, but she was stuck in a bit of a rut with pretty much the same foods over and over, in about a 5-day cycle: chicken stew, mac-n-cheese, rice and gravy, spaghetti with meat sauce, etc., with whatever boring steamed veggies on the side.
I live in South Louisiana, where we have delicious, flavorful, spicy cuisine. However, 1) it often contains ingredients she shouldn't have yet, such as shrimp, and 2) I'm afraid it might be too spicy for her! I didn't know how to provide the blandness of what baby can tolerate, while not deadening her taste buds to new flavors as she grows up (or making her into a picky eater).
This book really kicked up both the main and side dishes for her. The dishes are bland enough for young-uns to tolerate, but flavorful enough to excite their taste buds and explore new flavors. Also, they are probably more nutritious than what we'd been feeding her.
The book has several sections: a 6-month-and-up, a 7-month-and-up, an 8-month-and-up, a 9-and-up, and a 12-and-up chapter. There are brief blurbs about what to introduce at each stage, and each section has a grid showing a sample meal plan. It's not extremely thorough, but it is helpful and provides a simple guideline.
Here are some sample recipes:
6 months and up:
--mostly plain fruits and veggies, with good tips on how to prepare them
7 months and up:
--green rice (rice with fresh greens--very nice!)
--squash and pepper risotto
--vegetable paella
8 months and up:
--avocado chicken
--chicken with pumpkin
--chicken divine
9 months and up:
--fruity breakfast rice (yum!)
--broccoli and cauliflower gratin
12 months and up:
--fruity frosty shake
--nutty choco monkey
--nutty waffles
All the recipes are quite easy to make, believe me. And so delicious! The recipes recommend good ingredients, too, such as brown rice, lots of fruit and veggies, and low-sodium stock. Most of the ingredients are relatively easy to find at the grocery store, and easily substituted if you're on a budget.
The baby really likes the broccoli/cauliflower gratin, the spinach and tomatoes with ricotta, and the chicken tropical (chicken with mangoes). This book really gets baby interested in fruits and veggies, with its interesting, flavorful preparations.
Obviously, I cannot speak for parents of babies with severe food allergies. I also cannot speak for the younger babies, since I waited so long to get this book. All I can tell you is, a) delicious, b) easy to prepare, c) my baby loves the recipes.

Making nutritious, homemade baby food has never been so easy!

Baby food doesn't have to come in jars, and making your own at home is not difficult. Baby food is strained, puréed or mashed adult food - just a different version of the food you prepare for yourself.

Here are three good reasons to make baby food at home:
Knowing what's in it, therefore ensuring healthy and wholesome meals.
Tailoring the texture to your baby's preferences.
Shaping baby's tastes and helping him/her learn what fresh foods taste like.

Whether choosing to make all baby's food at home, or just some of it, the blender is a great way to offer new flavors in a baby-friendly texture. Once a child begins to eat table food, there is always an occasion for a fruit smoothie or a nutritious blended dip.

Here's a sampling of the deliciously easy recipes:
Six Months and Older: Peach and Pear Bananarama, Melon Madness, Zucchini and Nectarines, Roasted Vegetable Purée
Eight Months and Older: Vegetable Paella, Humus for Beginners, Chicken with Red Peppers and Corn, Beefy Broccoli
Nine Months and Older: Lemon Raspberry Yogurt, Over the Top Applesauce, Spinach and Tomatoes with Ricotta, Fisherman's Pie
Twelve Months and Older: Orange Banana Smoothie, Very Berry Pears, Broccoli and Cauliflower Melt, Veggie Cream Sauce

All the recipes in Blender Baby Food are accompanied by suggested age guidelines. Also included are lots of great tips for making baby food, storage and freezing guidelines as well as the appropriate way to thaw and reheat food. Plus, none of the recipes calls for any of the salt, sugar, starches or fillers found in many commercially prepared baby foods. Blender Baby Food helps parents give their baby the best nutritional advantage.

The Big Breakfast Diet: Eat Big Before 9 A.M. and Lose Big for Life
Average Reviews:

I followed Dr. Jakubowicz's Big Breakfast diet before my wedding and was thrilled with the results! I now always eat a big breakfast, and I especially love the delicious, healthy smoothie as part of my breakfast. My husband loves them, too.
The most amazing thing for me about this diet is that I used to always crave something sweet in the afternoon or at night, and now I don't.
I also love going to bed not feeling stuffed, and waking up feeling light. It makes it makes it easier to wake up in the mornings because I'm looking forward to breakfast.
I highly recommend this book!

Eat a huge breakfast, lose a lot of weight? It sounds counter-intuitive, but when a clinical professor of endocrinology and metabolic disease advocates it, maybe it's worth considering. And when that same clinical professor offers proof that overweight women lost nearly five times more weight on a breakfast cure diet than their counterparts did on a low-carb diet, it's time to pay attention. Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz, a clinical professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Hospital de Clinicas Caracas in Venezuela, originally published her diet book in Venezuela and it became a South American bestseller, selling 300,000 copies. Now after continued research, Dr. Jakubowicz presents The Big Breakfast Diet, with its promise that you can have all the foods you crave, from pasta to bacon to ice cream, with just one catch—you have to eat them before 9:00 A.M. Based on the body's natural rhythms, eating a big, complete breakfast revs up your metabolism; helps burn more calories during the day and more fat at night; satisfies hunger all day long; boosts your energy; eliminates cravings for sweets; and reduces the risk of serious health conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. After explaining the science behind the diet, and how the body's hormones and metabolism process food differently depending on what time of day you eat, The Big Breakfast Diet centers around a full 28-day meal plan—breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, plus recipes. The day begins with a big breakfast—a smoothie or shake, pancakes with berry syrup and ricotta cheese, Canadian bacon, a breakfast sweet—and ends with a moderate, delicious dinner.

The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time Review

The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These recipes are quick, easy, good, and best of all, a little more adventurous than your normal "family" cookbooks filled with chicken nuggets and pasta. I am not one to plan a week's meals ahead, and I love that I can open this book and find something great to make out of what I have on hand. I've made at least 15 of the recipes and every one was great. The prep time estimates seem to be pretty accurate. Our family in general likes things a little more spicy than most, so some recipes were a little bland but I just add a little more seasoning if that happens. I think they would probably be fine for most people, especially kids.
I think the authors are right on the mark with their advice on kids trying new foods, no "yuck!"s etc. Their philosophy is similar to our own house rules, and as a result my boys (3 and 7) are great eaters. I had the pleasure of meeting the authors at a bookstore signing, and I was very impressed with their knowledge, sensibility, and friendliness!

After being glued to his book: The 150 Healthiest Foods On Earth, I went ahead and ordered The Healthiest Meals on Earth.
Having made a huge change in my own personal diet 3 years ago(after reading Ultrametabolism), after reading Jonny's 150 Healthiest Foods On Earth helped me tweak my diet that much more. But the problem at home has been that my wife doesn't know what to cook for me.
This book has recipies for incredible meals based on a solid foundation of real nutrition. Eating with your health goals in mind, you get meals power packed with healthful nutrients that are very appealing visually and pleasing to the olfactory senses (smell).
It's not just a recipe book, but an explanation of the foods and spices that make up the meal.
There are some wonderful charts in the book that cross reference various foods with their healthful benefits.
He does the same for healthful oils.
If you are big into nutrition, this and his "150 healthiest foods" book are essential for your library.
Whether you are eating because you want to just be healthy or you have a specific condition you want to target with the proper nutrition, this book is great.
The bottom line: Jonny Bowden's nutritional advice just makes sense!
Thank you again Dr. Bowden for another great masterpiece!!!

Jonny Bowden's The Healthiest Meals on Earth contains recipes for more than sixty dishes and drinks that use nutritious and healthy cooking methods. Forty of these dishes will combine to create ten different "poly-meals", specially crafted meals that contain key nutrients found to promote long-term health. They include Sweet and Thai Spicy Shrimp and Fruits, Persian Chicken with Autumnal Accompaniments, and the "iron booster" of Tender Calf's Liver and Sweet Beets. A "Healthiest Holiday Meal" features Citrus Stuffed Turkey, Zippy Fruit Salsa, and Sweet Potato Pie. The poly-meals are designed to be eaten three-to-five times a week.
Another ten recipes are not part of the poly-meal structure; instead they are one-pot meals that include Slow-Cooker Chicken Curry, Miso Bean Soup, and Venison Stew. A chapter on drinks will include nutritious smoothies, so-called "green drinks", and others. Jonny will provide healthy cooking tips throughout the book, as well as an analysis of the foods in each recipe. Side dishes, such as Cold Strawberry Soup and Veggie Slaw with Flax Oil, and desserts, such as Raw Chocolate Fondue, are also featured.
This book pairs well with Bowden's successful 150 Healthiest Foods, and can even be used as a companion cookbook.

The Abs Diet 6-Minute Meals for 6-Pack Abs: More Than 150 Great-Tasting Recipes to Melt Away Fat Review

The Abs Diet 6-Minute Meals for 6-Pack Abs: More Than 150 Great-Tasting Recipes to Melt Away Fat
Average Reviews:

This latest book in the Abs Diet franchise is essentially another recipe book. As the title indicates, these are quickie recipes that can be made in minutes, though they throw in a few more involved meals at the end. Be clear, these are tasty and healthful recipes aimed at the fitness-oriented individual. You don't have to necessarily be following the Abs Diet plan per se, but anyone who has adopted a weightlifting + aerobics exercise program with a high-protein, controlled-carb and controlled-fat diet will find this book has what you're looking for, especially if you want meals you can make quickly and stick into a tupperware container to eat throughout the day.
Most of the recipes are not fancy, and many are quite obvious, being nothing more than various ways to combine ingredients to make a dozen versions of sandwiches, salads, breakfast omelettes, smoothies, etc. But as simple as they are, some of the combos just wouldn't have occurred to me on my own, but when I tried them, they were quite tasty! (Example: Brown rice mixed with black beans, heat, put a fried egg on top, and spoon some salsa over it. Simple, easy, and a great filling breakfast that can easily be put in a plastic container and microwaved at the office.)
This isn't a cookbook for entertaining guests with or preparing meals for a potluck. The recipes aren't fancy and someone not dedicated to eating and living like this might find them a bit plain. I find them nourishing and filling and they've added to my reportoire, so when I prepare the 5-6 meals I eat every day, I always have a decent variety to choose from. The "Abs Diet Eat Right Every Time Guide" also contains a lot of good recipes to choose from. This book is a good companion to that one.

Since following this book's guidelines in August, 2007, my blood glucose now is less than a 100, my weight has dropped to 188 pounds, and my trouser size has gone from a 42 to a 36. I highly recommend this book to anyone with heart trouble, diabetes, to anyone wanting to live a health lifestyle.

Hungry Girl: 200 Under 200: 200 Recipes Under 200 Calories Review

Hungry Girl: 200 Under 200: 200 Recipes Under 200 Calories

This is a seriously good guide for eating fewer calories. I am on to this idea of staying out of restaurants somewhat and mainly eating at home whenever possible. However, I now have the tools with this book to prepare good, delicious foods that aren't going to make me gain weight, but, in acutality, will help me to lose weight, which is the point of all of this. I have to say that I loved the layout of this book and it read so easily. The recipes weren't too complicated and it's just a fun way to lose the pounds. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to make the commitment to cook at home and lose the weight that way. Another I liked and helped too was Goodbye, Fatty! Hello, Skinny! How I Lost Weight And Still Ate The Foods I Loved-Without Dieting. I guess it's just in how you want to approach the diet. Either way, you're sure to lose some weight if you stick to the plan.

Zone Food Blocks: The Quick and Easy, Mix-and-Match Counter for Staying in the Zone Review

Zone Food Blocks: The Quick and Easy, Mix-and-Match Counter for Staying in the Zone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book should get the prize for completely BAD representation of information. I am a total zone convert, it has changed my life, but if I had this book to start with, it would have hindered, NOT helped me in my path. Most of the measurements are not helpful, they are not consistent. Some are in cups, some are in ozs, some in slices, all in decimal amounts (where is my .1 cup measure?). They are in block amounts rather than serving amounts. (Is it useful to know that .8 of a 3/4 oz slice is 1 block? or is it useful to know how much 1 slice is???). Some items are in the wrong group. Ice Cream is a *protien* rather than a carb as it belongs. The foods have a decidedly east coast bent as many of the foods listed are either not available on the west coast, or common west coast brands are missing.
I was really looking forward to this book to help out friends and family members that want to start the zone. I was very disappointed. Mastering the Zone still represents the best effort by Dr. Sears, though I would hope that before he is allowed to write again, that he gets an qualified editor that can help in the presentation of ideas.
