The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook: Great-Tasting Recipes That Keep You Lean Review

The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook: Great-Tasting Recipes That Keep You Lean
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having lost a ton of weight, and apparently good at keeping it off, Tosca Reno decided to write this book after her bestselling The Eat-Clean Diet: Fast Fat-Loss that lasts Forever!. I guess it was so popular that there was a demand for Eat Clean Recipes. After looking at the book, I can see why.
First off, if you're looking for any detailed explanations of the Eat Clean diet, you won't find it here- check out her other book instead, The Eat-Clean Diet: Fast Fat-Loss that lasts Forever!. But just to give you a very brief overview, it's a nutritional plan that maximizes your intake of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants by incorporating "whole foods" from every group. Some of the Clean Eating Principles include things such as: eat 5-6 small meals a day, eat every 2-3 hrs., avoid saturated fats, and stick to proper portion sizes. As you can see, it's healthy and sensible.
Anyway, the book is just loaded with recipes. A little bit about the layout. Major recipe sections include breakfast, soup, grains, sauces, one-dish and easy meals, proteins, vegetables, pasta, sweets and breads, and festive occasions. Most notable, perhaps, is that each recipe tells you the nutritional breakdown (total calories, fat calories, protein, carbs, fiber, sugars, fat, and sodium). Also included is the approximate preparation AND cook time. Nice!
So needless to say, I was well-pleased with the book. It's practical and healthy. A must-have if you're an Eat Clean fan or if you're just looking for a few healthy recipes. Readers trying to make healthy lifestyle changes might also be interested in The Sixty-Second Motivator.

The Brazilian Bikini Body Program: 30 Days to a Sexier Body and Mind Review

The Brazilian Bikini Body Program: 30 Days to a Sexier Body and Mind
Average Reviews:

Pretty much the whole thing is just raving about about how wonderful and exotic the Brazilian lifestyle and culture is.
I suppose the diet would work if you followed it and the recipes are interesting and tasty sounding. I'm going to try a few of those. But the workouts are silly and I don't believe you could really change your body by following them.
I think if you're new to exercise, you'll have trouble following them correctly and if you're someone who is already active, these won't do anything for you and challenge you. This is my opinion as a fitness professional who guides people who are new to exercise through some of the simplest movements on a day-to-day basis. It is an informed opinion.
I found the book really fluffy and disappointing.
Want a brazilian bikini body? Follow the diet and incorporate some barbell squats into your routine. That'll do it.

The Abs Diet 6-Minute Meals for 6-Pack Abs: More Than 150 Great-Tasting Recipes to Melt Away Fat Review

The Abs Diet 6-Minute Meals for 6-Pack Abs: More Than 150 Great-Tasting Recipes to Melt Away Fat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This latest book in the Abs Diet franchise is essentially another recipe book. As the title indicates, these are quickie recipes that can be made in minutes, though they throw in a few more involved meals at the end. Be clear, these are tasty and healthful recipes aimed at the fitness-oriented individual. You don't have to necessarily be following the Abs Diet plan per se, but anyone who has adopted a weightlifting + aerobics exercise program with a high-protein, controlled-carb and controlled-fat diet will find this book has what you're looking for, especially if you want meals you can make quickly and stick into a tupperware container to eat throughout the day.
Most of the recipes are not fancy, and many are quite obvious, being nothing more than various ways to combine ingredients to make a dozen versions of sandwiches, salads, breakfast omelettes, smoothies, etc. But as simple as they are, some of the combos just wouldn't have occurred to me on my own, but when I tried them, they were quite tasty! (Example: Brown rice mixed with black beans, heat, put a fried egg on top, and spoon some salsa over it. Simple, easy, and a great filling breakfast that can easily be put in a plastic container and microwaved at the office.)
This isn't a cookbook for entertaining guests with or preparing meals for a potluck. The recipes aren't fancy and someone not dedicated to eating and living like this might find them a bit plain. I find them nourishing and filling and they've added to my reportoire, so when I prepare the 5-6 meals I eat every day, I always have a decent variety to choose from. The "Abs Diet Eat Right Every Time Guide" also contains a lot of good recipes to choose from. This book is a good companion to that one.

Zone Food Blocks: The Quick and Easy, Mix-and-Match Counter for Staying in the Zone Review

Zone Food Blocks: The Quick and Easy, Mix-and-Match Counter for Staying in the Zone
Average Reviews:

This book should get the prize for completely BAD representation of information. I am a total zone convert, it has changed my life, but if I had this book to start with, it would have hindered, NOT helped me in my path. Most of the measurements are not helpful, they are not consistent. Some are in cups, some are in ozs, some in slices, all in decimal amounts (where is my .1 cup measure?). They are in block amounts rather than serving amounts. (Is it useful to know that .8 of a 3/4 oz slice is 1 block? or is it useful to know how much 1 slice is???). Some items are in the wrong group. Ice Cream is a *protien* rather than a carb as it belongs. The foods have a decidedly east coast bent as many of the foods listed are either not available on the west coast, or common west coast brands are missing.
I was really looking forward to this book to help out friends and family members that want to start the zone. I was very disappointed. Mastering the Zone still represents the best effort by Dr. Sears, though I would hope that before he is allowed to write again, that he gets an qualified editor that can help in the presentation of ideas.

Men's Health Muscle Chow: More Than 150 Meals to Feed Your Muscles and Fuel Your Workouts Review

Men's Health Muscle Chow: More Than 150 Meals to Feed Your Muscles and Fuel Your Workouts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's hard to find a decent clean-eating cookbook. This one certainly is decent, but I wouldn't give it much more praise than that. There are some recipes that are pretty good and all of them are quite straightforward, but my major problem with the book is that some of the recipes are complete fluff that could have been all compiled onto a single page ("quick bites", or something like that). For instance, the "Fix and Eat Sardine Sandwich". Now, I'm going from memory here, but I'm pretty sure that the steps boiled down to these steps: Take two slices of bread, spread mustard on each slice, then put the sardines between the two pieces of bread and eat them. Sorry, Gregg, but I'm a healthy eater, not someone who's never been in a kitchen before. There are other recipes like this ("Slice up a head of lettuce and serve it with mustard as dipping sauce", for example) that are really wastes of space.
Also, it would have been good to see more explanation regarding carb-cycling (or carb-shifting as he describes it), along with macronutrient breakdowns for the different eating phases Gregg describes in the book.
There's some good stuff in here, that's for sure, but it's too much like a fluffernutter sandwich: lots of healthy potential surrounded, unfortunately, by too much fluff.

5 Essentials for a Winning Life: The Nutrition, Fitness, and Life Plan for Discovering the Champion Within Review

5 Essentials for a Winning Life: The Nutrition, Fitness, and Life Plan for Discovering the Champion Within
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, I respect the Carmichael industry and what he has done for Lance is undisputable. This is an excellent program for the out of shape or entry level endurance athlete. If you haven't worked-out seriously, or have found yourself greatly out of shape at 40 this is the book for you.
But it fails to deliver for anyone who has already competed in endurance sports for more than one year. As an age-group triathlete (several short course, and a couple ironmans performances under my belt), this book really doesn't add anything new to the table.
After a disappointing performance in an Ironman (despite following a strict work-out plan) and reaching a crux in my life concerning my exercise program, I hoped this book would help bring some balance and love of training back into my life. I bought this book because I was interested in the other essentials to a winning life, especially on the ones on relationships, and career. These chapters offer very little that is not tied to exercise (the career chapter only focuses on how exercise will help you at work), and the relationship chapter is surprisingly really focused on the need for sex as we get older and how exercise can help fulfill this need. Other than that there isn't really much new said about either relationships or career.
So in all, this is a great book for the athlete just getting started, the mid-life person who suddenly finds himself 30 pounds over weight, or anyone wanting to get started on a serious lifestyle change. But for those of us who already have been training and who are looking for literature to find balance or rebound from a disappointing performance, this book is not the solution.

I have begun "cooking my way through" this cookbook and am very impressed! It is a combination of a great book (summary of the paleo diet), great reference, as well as a thorough cookbook. The recipes are fantastic - simple yet flavorful, easy yet complex and just plain delicious. Frankly, this is the best damn cookbook I have found if you want to cook and eat real food. Hands down a great buy and worth every penny! I took the book to kinko's to cut the binding and replaced it with a ring binding and laminate the cover and back so it is a bit more durable. I am adding my own pictures and recipes in the back. I could not be happier (and in better shape).
