Pillsbury The Savvy Shopper's Cookbook: Hundreds of Simple Strategies for Smart Spending and Inspiring Mealtime Ideas Review

Pillsbury The Savvy Shopper's Cookbook: Hundreds of Simple Strategies for Smart Spending and Inspiring Mealtime Ideas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This cookbook has been one of my best investments for college. I would suggest it to anyone shopping on a budget, or who finds cooking daunting sometimes. None of the recipes are straining or complicated and all the ingredients are things you can use in more than one recipe or already have in the house.
Yes a lot of the recipes call for pillsbury products but they did have the decency not to mention them by name.
If you like restaurant style food, this is also a great cookbook cause it has a lot of things you would order if you went out for a meal but you can make it at home. The tips and tricks are very helpful too.
I see this cookbook being out on the counter for a long time.

Best-Ever Casseroles Cookbook (Gooseberry Patch) Review

Best-Ever Casseroles Cookbook (Gooseberry Patch)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me say that I am a HUGE Gooseberry Patch fan. Currently I own six of their books: Slow Cooker Recipes, Best-Ever Casseroles, What's for Dinner?, Come on Over, One-Pot Meals and From Grandma's Kitchen. I just LOVE the books. The recipes are very easy, not too fancy, don't take long and always taste good. They are easy to read and the spiral binding keeps the books open flat. I think out of all of the books, I have only made one thing that I didn't care for. They are just great, great books to have around and I love the little tips on each page, the way that every book is broken up by meats and categories and just all of the other little helpful charts and equivalents that are in each book. In my opinion, they are just great additions to any cookbook collection and I love having them in my kitchen.
I have probably used this one more than any other GP book that I have. I have made Finnish Pancakes, Baked Apple Pancake, Amish Baked Oatmeal, Nutty French Toast Bake, Broccoli-Chicken Lasagna, Dilly Tuna Casserole, and Mom's Broccoli Casserole, and all were fantastic. The recipes are laid out well, easy to prepare and the ingredients are basic and not hard to find. Most of the stuff you probably already have in your refrigerator or pantry. The breakfast dishes I have made are fantastic and a lot of them can be made the night before so you can pop them in the oven when you wake up, which is awesome for a lazy weekend. And everything reheats perfectly which makes for great leftovers to take to work during the week.
Now, are they gourmet? No. There are a PLETHORA of other casserole books out there that are if you are looking for something that will take you two hours to prepare before you even get it in the oven (like the crab and artichoke casserole I made last night from another book). But if you are looking for a nice, basic casserole book without too many processed soups and that won't take you too much time to prepare, this is a very good one.
Way to go, Gooseberry Patch!

Everyday Italian: 125 Simple and Delicious Recipes Review

Everyday Italian: 125 Simple and Delicious Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a big fan of the show since the beginning. This book is a blessing. For a long time I would have to hunt down the recopies on the food network website, print them, lose half of them, etc. This way I have it all in a beautiful glossy hard cover book, written with warmth, personal stories and mouth watering pictures of the dishes.
I have made many of the dishes she features in her book, and not one turned out badly. It all comes out exactly as it's supposed to. That's tricky with some cookbooks, when you just can't get it to be what it's meant to be. Giada's book is divided in these sections:
Antipasti, Sauces, Pasta Polenta and Risotto, Entrees, Contorini (Side Dishes) and Dolci (Desserts)

Some of my favorite recipes I've made are:
Stuffed mushrooms: thank goodness they are so simple to make, because I am being hounded by my boyfriend to make them. Simply amazing.
Simple Bolognese- meaty, fresh, and satisfying, plus you don't have to wonder what was in it. You made it and you know it's clean. Classic recipe that's easy to follow.
Brown Butter sauce - I can still close my eyes and taste the sage and butter, over any meat. Instant dress up to any meal.
Chicken piccata - light, lemony, olivey, simply fantastic.
I can just go on and on, but I don't want to bore anyone. This book is simply super. I don't mind the pictures of her, and if she changed her clothes for every single photo in the book, I would have mistaken it for a Vogue shoot, instead of a cookbook.
Hope you can enjoy it as much as I am. This book is in constant use at my house.

The Hamptons Diet Cookbook: Enjoying the Hamptons Lifestyle Wherever You Live Review

The Hamptons Diet Cookbook: Enjoying the Hamptons Lifestyle Wherever You Live
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How DO the rich and famous always seem to stay so thin and healthy? With the exception of maybe Danny DeVito and Rodney Dangerfield, can you think of very many movie stars who are overweight or obese? Probably not. That's because they have found the secret to eating better quality foods that not only satisfy their tastebuds, but also their nutritional needs.
Dr. Fred Pescatore first introduced his healthy weight loss principles in his groundbreaking 2004 bestselling book called The Hamptons Diet with Hollywood hotties Sara Jessica Parker and Ren?e Zellweger among its most ardent followers.
But now, by popular demand, Dr. Pescatore is back with a hot new book full of over 200 mouthwatering and flavorfully unique recipes called The Hampton's Diet Cookbook. While you may not be rich and famous, he shows you how you can eat like one with Mediterranean-styled cooking assistance from renowned chef Jeff Harter.
Once you try many of these recipes, you'll forget you're actually on a diet! That is the beauty of finding a low-carb program like The Hamptons Diet -- IT TASTES SO GOOD YOU CAN'T BELIEVE IT CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT.
But it does. With countless numbers of people using this nutritional approach to lose weight in 2006, despite what the naysayers in the media and those pesky low-fat lovin' health "experts" say, the fact remains that this way of eating has worked and STILL continues to work to help people lose weight and keep it off for good. I lost over 180 pounds thanks to a healthy low-carb eating plan and you can too!
As a strong proponent of eating more organic whole foods as well as liberal amounts of macadamia nut oil, Dr. Pescatore wants the average, everyday person to look at food in an entirely different manner than they ever have before. Pay attention to the kind of carbohydrates that you are putting in your mouth and stick with the healthful slow-release ones as well as foods that are balanced according to the glycemic index and the glycemic load. The recipes in The Hampton's Diet Cookbook provide you with this balance.
Just in case you didn't get his original book, Dr. Pescatore provides an abridged version of The Hamptons Diet plan at the front of his new book to catch you up to speed, including explaining the various food pyramids that you will want to know about when you are on his diet. Trust me, throw out everything you thought you knew about diet and nutrition and keep your mind open to the greater possibilities that await you in this book.
There's even one chapter that explains what kind of kitchen appliances and tools you will need to start eating healthier. Hey, if you're gonna make the commitment to lose weight and keep it off, then what better way than to start anew than to literally clean house?! You'll also enjoy the convenient grocery shopping lists that Dr. Pescatore provides to keep you focused on what you need to do to get with the plan and make it happen for yourself.
The recipes in The Hampton's Diet Cookbook cover breakfast ("the most important meal of the day"), lunch (something light, nothing fancy), and dinner ("one of the most enjoyable and entertaining parts of the day"). Additionally, there are great side dishes and salads to combat boredom on the plan even if you can't make it look very good (Dr. Pescatore wrote that "the hardest thing for me is to get a salad to look pretty"). I can relate, but who cares when the taste is...mmmmmm!
For those of you who want to entertain guests and dazzle them with your low-carb cooking prowess, Dr. Pescatore presents a series of popular party recipes that will have them raving! Interestingly, you would think these recipes would need to be fancy-schmancy, but actually many of them are quite simple. The point is, Dr. Pescatore explains, to have fun with your life and stop worrying about food so much. It's time to eat better and be merry -- The Hamptons Diet way!
But what would a cookbook be without a few wonderfully tantalizing desserts?! However (and I LOVE this!), Dr. Pescatore makes it very clear up front what you won't see in his recipe book: "Sugar won't be used in any of these dessert recipes." EXCELLENT! That's just the way we like it when we are livin' la vida low-carb. A superb dissertation on what is acceptable as an alternative to sugar is included at the beginning of the dessert chapter to help you make the right choices about what you should use, including a list of the "healthy sweeteners" (Stevia, Xylitol), ones where the "jury is still out" (Splenda, maltitol), and finally the ones you really should "avoid" (hint: Nutrasweet didn't do so well).
At the back of the book, Dr. Pescatore includes in the appendix an amazing resource guide to help you find some of the ingredients that may be hard for you to find in your area. He earnestly wants to see you succeed at his plan and literally thought of everything for people who read The Hampton's Diet Cookbook.
Regardless of which low-carb plan you have been on, whether it's Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power, or The Zone, The Hampton's Diet Cookbookwill give you even more succulent and tasty recipes your are sure to love and enjoy with your family. Eating healthy never tasted so good! That's the miracle of low-carb living. THANKS, Dr. Pescatore for continuing to be a champion of this amazingly miraculous way of eating!

Build a Better Burger: Celebrating Sutter Home's Annual Search for America's Best Burgers Review

Build a Better Burger: Celebrating Sutter Home's Annual Search for America's Best Burgers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Build a Better Burger presents the winning recipes from the annual Build a Better Burger National Cook-off held annually and sponsored by Sutter Home. Recipes begin trickling in during the Summer and the best are invited to compete in early Fall in the beautiful Napa Valley where the grand prize is a whopping $50,000. With that kind of money on the line, you know that these are people who take their burgers seriously. The book begins with a brief but breezy history of the burger as well as some of the notable fast food burger chains such as McDonald's and White Castle.
The book presents the winning recipes by year beginning with 1990. These are no everyday burgers, however. These creative recipes use just about any ingredient you can think of. Not limited to just beef, these recipes call for ground turkey, chicken, pork, buffalo, lamb, tuna, Salmon, even Italian sausage and shrimp! Among the exotic burger recipes contained in the book are such gems as: Three nut turkey Burgers with tropical fruit salsa, Peppered Lamb Burgers with hot tomato jam, Salmon Burgers with Lemon cilantro mayonnaise, Samurai Burgers made with tuna, plum jam, and fish broth, and Chipolte Honey BBQ Bacon Burgers with Gorgonzola cheese. No...these are not your everyday backyard burgers.
That's its appeal and maybe a bit of its weakness as well. First, many of the recipes contain some rather unusual ingredients. Items such as Moscato, South African peppadew, and dried Guajillo chiles are things you probably won't find in the average grocery store. The recipes are well presented with gorgeous color photography of the finished creations. They're certainly mouth-watering to view but I wonder if they will have broad appeal. Honestly looking through the dozens of recipes I could only pick a handful that I'd really want to try out. Perhaps others are more adventurous than me. If you are, then this is certainly a great place to start for some new and exciting recipes.

Twelve of the illustrious chefs and cookbook authors who have judged the cook-off also share their creative burger recipes. Some of the innovative and tasty burgers are: Caesar Salad and Flank Steak Burgers with Garlic Crostini Hazelnut-Crusted Lamb Burgers Carolina Pork Barbecue Burgers Green Chile Chicken Burgers with Orange-Chile Salsa and Three-Pepper Cheese Spread Mediterranean Tuna Burgers with Lemon-Basil MayonnaiseTo complement the recipes, Sutter Home'¬?s culinary director and executive chef, Jeffrey Starr, suggests a perfect wine match for each one and offers general tips for pairing wine with burgers. And rounding out the book are guidelines for making better burgers and writing recipes for your own award-worthy creations.Build a Better Burger is the perfect summer companion, full of recipes bound to please every backyard cook. The Deen Bros. Take It Easy: Quick and Affordable Meals the Whole Family Will Love Review

The Deen Bros. Take It Easy: Quick and Affordable Meals the Whole Family Will Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was interested in this book because of their promotion that the meals are primarily easy, healthy and child friendly. I pretty much agree with it all. Though there are several recipes with a high spice level, there are many mild recipes like the Pesto Chicken with cherry tomatoes and Apple Cider Pork Tenderloin that my child will eat. The cookbook has many informative sections such as the contents of a well stocked pantry as well as great pictures of the whole Deen crew. The "Jack Favorites" section offers a healthy spin on child friendly foods. (I liked the idea of adding avocados to a cheese quesadilla.) Overall I found the cookbook to be well organized, informative and easy to read with uncomplicated, yet appealing recipes.

This cookbook is not only full of fabulous bean recipes, it is a fun read as well! I love Suzanne's suggestions, helpful hints, and the extras about friends and family who lovingly inspired her along the way.
As a bean LOVER, I am delighted by all the extremely creative recipes - and I'm anxious to try out the desserts! One of my favorite things about this cookbook is the set-up. Instead of the traditional cookbook method of chapters grouped into "appetizers", "entrees", "desserts", etc. - each chapter in this book is dedicated to ONE bean variety. So for example, with black beans - you will find all the appetizers, entrees, desserts, etc. IN the black bean chapter! I thought this was great - no digging through the "desserts" chapter to find where the black bean desserts are!
I highly recommend this cookbook - there is literally something for everyone. It makes healthy eating FUN - thank you Suzanne!

Cupcakes: From the Cake Mix Doctor Review

Cupcakes: From the Cake Mix Doctor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't often give cookbooks a 5 star, just because many of them have only a few new recipes that I would try, or because the format is poor. Oftentimes, I check out cookbooks from my local library, pick out the recipes that I want to try, and jot them down. When I started to do that with this book, however, I noticed that I was marking several pages in a row, and pretty soon had most of the pages bookmarked! I stopped marking, returned the book to the library, and purchased my own copy.
What makes this seemingly simple concept so special? Well, as the author points out, most people love cupcakes. They are versatile, portable, and easy to create. You can make cupcakes as simple or as creative as you would like. And this great book of over 135 recipes can help in any situation. Need 2 dozen cupcakes for the class bake sale and want the cupcakes to look incredible? Want to impress your dinner guests but not spend hours in the kitchen? Want to wow your kids with a special treat after school? You can make up a batch of cupcakes that will accomplish all of these tasks.
I loved the fact that most of the recipes start with a box of cake mix, and ingredients that I keep in my pantry and refrigerator. Some of my family's favorites include: Red Velvet Cupcakes, Coconut Snowballs, Caramel Spiced Apple Cupcakes, Fresh Raspberry Cream Cakes, and the Marshmallow Frosting.
The author has 2 other books that are also worth a try, "The Cake Mix Doctor" and "The Dinner Doctor". Enjoy!

The cupcake is America’s darling. It’s celebrated in upscale bakeries, on Sex in the City, on the cover of Gourmet, and in thou-sands of classrooms—where every day, it seems, a parent has sent in a batch for the kids to share. The very word conjures up whimsy, coziness, pleasure, nostalgia. Not to mention the fact that their diminutive size means you can eat a lot of them. Once upon a time, a family had only two recipes for cupcakes—chocolate and vanilla. Not anymore. Now Anne Byrn brings them to the next level. And who better? Recognized as the master of cake-mix baking, Anne is the author of The Cake Mix Doctor and Chocolate from the Cake Mix Doctor, which have a total of over 1.8 million copies in print. In Cupcakes she offers 135 tempting recipes for children and grown-ups, for special days and everyday, lunch bags, holiday festivities, and an unexpected dinner party dessert. You’ll never believe these artful little cakes started with a mix. Coconut Snowballs, Jelly Doughnut Cupcakes, Kiss Me Cakes, Warm Chocolate Cupcakes with Molten Centers, Red Velvet Cupcakes with White Chocolate Peppermint Cream Cheese Frosting. There are surprising additions (tuck a chocolate kiss orpiece of cookie dough into the batter). Creative toppings and easy from-scratch frostings (whipped cream spiked with Kahlua; miniature M&Ms; a creamy malted frosting with crushed malted milk balls).Terrific decorating ideas, from glittering golden dragees or elegant chocolate curls to yellow peeps for an Easter cupcake or—for Groundhog’s Day—a groundhog’s face made out of chocolate frosting and jimmies. Includes a 16-page full-color opening essay.

The Steamy Kitchen Cookbook: 101 Asian Recipes Simple Enough for Tonight's Dinner Review

The Steamy Kitchen Cookbook: 101 Asian Recipes Simple Enough for Tonight's Dinner

I love buying cookbooks. I love the pictures, the recipes, and trying new things. However, not many cookbooks have appealed to me because of their long, complicated recipes, so most of the time, these lovely cookbooks end up sitting on my shelf collecting dust.
A good friend of mine got me this for Christmas, and I literally jumped for joy when I opened the package. Jaden is one of my favorite food bloggers, and I couldn't wait to try out her new recipes.
I feel like she gets it-- who wants to spend 8 hours at work, only to come home and spend another 3 hours on dinner after stopping by the grocery to buy 50 things you didn't have and are only going to use once? She gets that I need dinner now, I want it good, and I want it to only LOOK like I spent a lot of time on it. This book is perfect. Her recipes are fresh, fun, and very simple. I've made some good stuff in a dinky studio kitchen (with no oven), and my husband is happy after a long day at pharmacy school. I HIGHLY recommend it, even for your kitchen-fearing friends!
I also bought this book for a friend of mine who lives in Florida. I told her no excuses about not being to cook Asian food; if Jaden can do it, she can!

Glorious One-Pot Meals Review

Glorious One-Pot Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this cookbook as a gift from a family member who lives in Denver, where the author lives. I guess that is where this method is most popular, but I wouldn't be surprised if it starts spreading like wildfire. As the mother of a very active toddler, I know first-hand how tough it is to get a healthy, tasty, and not-the-same-as-always meal on the table. I've had this cookbook for several months now and have tried many different recipes. I always add my own flair depending on what I have in the fridge and pantry, and that is the beauty of this method... you can make up your own meals without having to do special shopping but once (I highly recommend getting olive oil spray (Trader Joe's has a good one)to liberally coat your pot -- I do that and do not experience any of the burning that a few others have mentioned in their reviews).
I've hopped back onto amazon to buy a few more copies because I can't find them out here in LA yet (hopefully the specialty cooking stores will start to catch on) and I have a birthday and a wedding to attend next month for other busy busy friends who like good food but don't have time to cook often. I just finished reading some of the reviews and thought that I would respond to a few of the negative comments. First, I think it is very important to use a good pot. I use a 2-quart enamel coated cast iron pot -- just like the book suggests. I think if you use just cast iron that isn't enamel coated or if you use stainless steel, you may end up having problems. Also, not all ovens are the same!!! I have a semi-brand-new oven that I've been cooking these meals in, but I then brought my pot and cookbook over to a friend's to show her how it works and the meal (the same meal I've made several times at home) was dried out! She pulled out her oven thermometer and tested her oven, and lo and behold it was hotter than it should have been. I checked the book's website and the author states: "If your oven runs too hot you may find that your veggies are too soft and your meat is dried out."
There are outside factors to consider when using these recipes.. the pot and the oven... once you get those all squared away, it should be smooth sailing... as it was for me!

Winner of an iParenting Media 2007 Outstanding Product Award!Award-winning Finalist for National Indie Excellence Awards 2007, Best Books 2006, Colorado Independent Publishers Association EVVY Award 2006.
This truly different cookbook introduces a revolutionary, patented cooking technique for using whole foods to build one-pot meals in about 20 minutes.

The only thing Glorious One-Pot Meals have in common with familiar one-pot meal methods -- such as crock pot stews, casseroles, skillet meals and stir-fries -- is that everything goes into one pot to cook. Specifically, for Glorious One-Pot Meals, a cast iron Dutch oven. Otherwise, there is nothing to compare to the ease, speed and convenience of Glorious One-Pot Meals and the surprising way that each ingredient maintains its integrity during the cooking process. You can even substitute frozen ingredients without adjusting the time needed to cook the recipe!

This is a low-fat, whole food-based infusion cooking technique that locks in nutrients for fresher flavors, varied textures and healthier meals. Recipes are based on the power of two, making this a great solution for feeding families of one, two, four, or even ten or more. Each Glorious One-Pot Meal recipe contains a complete and balanced dinner of protein, grains, and vegetable side dishes with the bonus of minimal preparation and only one pot to clean. Great for vegetarians (about one-third of the recipes are vegetarian, and with this flexible cooking solution, any Glorious One-Pot Meals recipe can easily be meatless or even vegan!), heart patients or sufferers from any chronic disease (Multiple Sclerosis, diabetes, cancer, obesity, etc.) or food allergy. Kosher cooks should not be put off by the cover photo: Glorious One-Pot Meals are a natural for following the laws of kashrut as well.

With an ingenious covered spiral so that the book will never flip closed and leave you short-handed in mid-pour, this cookbookincludes more than just recipes: look for an entire chapter featuring tips for efficient weekly grocery shopping and advice on stocking a pantry and freezer for convenient meal preparation any time.

A lifesaver for everyone from busy parents looking to get a quick dinner on the table to newlyweds learning to cook to empty nesters needing only to cook for two now to seniors concerned with time-saving, healthy and satisfying meals, more than 10,000 home cooks already know and love Glorious One-Pot Meals.Don't overlook the companion website (GloriousOnePotMeals.com) with resources to answer any questions. Peggy Knickerbocker certainly knows how to plan the perfect seasonal menu. The breathtaking photographs caught my attention when I was looking for a new book with entertaining ideas. The menus are elegant and simple and show how to use fresh, seasonal ingredients when planning what to serve to friends for a dinner party. A simple Parisian dinner, a romantic dinner for two, and a Fall Harvest dinner were the first three menus that I used. You can even mix and match the different menus to create your own extraordinary evening at home. Even a roasted chicken and simple green beans become culinary delights with the recipes from Simple Soirees. I plan to use this book for ideas for my Thanksgiving dinner this year and for my annual holiday party. Thank you, Peggy, for this terrific book of entertaining inspiration!
