The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook: Great-Tasting Recipes That Keep You Lean Review

The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook: Great-Tasting Recipes That Keep You Lean
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having lost a ton of weight, and apparently good at keeping it off, Tosca Reno decided to write this book after her bestselling The Eat-Clean Diet: Fast Fat-Loss that lasts Forever!. I guess it was so popular that there was a demand for Eat Clean Recipes. After looking at the book, I can see why.
First off, if you're looking for any detailed explanations of the Eat Clean diet, you won't find it here- check out her other book instead, The Eat-Clean Diet: Fast Fat-Loss that lasts Forever!. But just to give you a very brief overview, it's a nutritional plan that maximizes your intake of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants by incorporating "whole foods" from every group. Some of the Clean Eating Principles include things such as: eat 5-6 small meals a day, eat every 2-3 hrs., avoid saturated fats, and stick to proper portion sizes. As you can see, it's healthy and sensible.
Anyway, the book is just loaded with recipes. A little bit about the layout. Major recipe sections include breakfast, soup, grains, sauces, one-dish and easy meals, proteins, vegetables, pasta, sweets and breads, and festive occasions. Most notable, perhaps, is that each recipe tells you the nutritional breakdown (total calories, fat calories, protein, carbs, fiber, sugars, fat, and sodium). Also included is the approximate preparation AND cook time. Nice!
So needless to say, I was well-pleased with the book. It's practical and healthy. A must-have if you're an Eat Clean fan or if you're just looking for a few healthy recipes. Readers trying to make healthy lifestyle changes might also be interested in The Sixty-Second Motivator.

Slim and Scrumptious: More Than 75 Delicious, Healthy Meals Your Family Will Love Review

Slim and Scrumptious: More Than 75 Delicious, Healthy Meals Your Family Will Love
Average Reviews:

I have mixed emotions about this cookbook because the three recipes I have cooked (Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Beef and Bell Pepper Stir Fry, and Double Chocolate Pancakes with Strawberry Sauce) were fantastic. The reason I only gave the book three stars is that several of the recipes are obviously flawed. On page 106, the Mediterranean Meatloaf calls for 1/4 pounds (sic) ground turkey and no other meat. I'm guessing that's not enough meat to make a meatloaf for 6 people and perhaps it was supposed to be 1 1/4 pounds. On page 178, the picture of the Summer Squash Tian clearly includes both yellow squash and zucchini but the recipe doesn't include zucchini.
I haven't studied the book enough to know if there are other errors and I will still try other recipes, it just seems like a lot of money for a book that needed more time with the editor.
UPDATE: Joy wrote to let me know that the error in the Mediterranean Meatloaf recipe will be corrected in future printings so I've updated my rating to five stars. And just so you know, I've tried three more recipes, the Hoisin-Glazed Salmon, Summer Squash Tian (I added zucchini), and Sesame Chicken Tenders and they were all very good. With recipes corrected, this is definitely a 5-Star cookbook!

The Brazilian Bikini Body Program: 30 Days to a Sexier Body and Mind Review

The Brazilian Bikini Body Program: 30 Days to a Sexier Body and Mind
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pretty much the whole thing is just raving about about how wonderful and exotic the Brazilian lifestyle and culture is.
I suppose the diet would work if you followed it and the recipes are interesting and tasty sounding. I'm going to try a few of those. But the workouts are silly and I don't believe you could really change your body by following them.
I think if you're new to exercise, you'll have trouble following them correctly and if you're someone who is already active, these won't do anything for you and challenge you. This is my opinion as a fitness professional who guides people who are new to exercise through some of the simplest movements on a day-to-day basis. It is an informed opinion.
I found the book really fluffy and disappointing.
Want a brazilian bikini body? Follow the diet and incorporate some barbell squats into your routine. That'll do it.

The Abs Diet 6-Minute Meals for 6-Pack Abs: More Than 150 Great-Tasting Recipes to Melt Away Fat Review

The Abs Diet 6-Minute Meals for 6-Pack Abs: More Than 150 Great-Tasting Recipes to Melt Away Fat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This latest book in the Abs Diet franchise is essentially another recipe book. As the title indicates, these are quickie recipes that can be made in minutes, though they throw in a few more involved meals at the end. Be clear, these are tasty and healthful recipes aimed at the fitness-oriented individual. You don't have to necessarily be following the Abs Diet plan per se, but anyone who has adopted a weightlifting + aerobics exercise program with a high-protein, controlled-carb and controlled-fat diet will find this book has what you're looking for, especially if you want meals you can make quickly and stick into a tupperware container to eat throughout the day.
Most of the recipes are not fancy, and many are quite obvious, being nothing more than various ways to combine ingredients to make a dozen versions of sandwiches, salads, breakfast omelettes, smoothies, etc. But as simple as they are, some of the combos just wouldn't have occurred to me on my own, but when I tried them, they were quite tasty! (Example: Brown rice mixed with black beans, heat, put a fried egg on top, and spoon some salsa over it. Simple, easy, and a great filling breakfast that can easily be put in a plastic container and microwaved at the office.)
This isn't a cookbook for entertaining guests with or preparing meals for a potluck. The recipes aren't fancy and someone not dedicated to eating and living like this might find them a bit plain. I find them nourishing and filling and they've added to my reportoire, so when I prepare the 5-6 meals I eat every day, I always have a decent variety to choose from. The "Abs Diet Eat Right Every Time Guide" also contains a lot of good recipes to choose from. This book is a good companion to that one.

Zone-Perfect Meals in Minutes Review

Zone-Perfect Meals in Minutes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all - don't get me wrong: I am a big fan of the Zone diet, and a large part of the reason for that is it's relatively easy to understand and to integrate into my lifestyle without any really onerous sacrifices. I have even been able to concoct Zone-friendly foods that are acceptable to my 12-year old son, who is a somewhat finicky eater. So all kudos to Dr. Barry Sears, the creator of the Zone principles.
Furthermore, there is an obvious need for a Zone cookbook - As Barry Sears says in the introductory chapter, "The biggest complaint about the Zone Diet is that it takes too much time. No longer. If you follow a few simple rules and use the recipes provided in this book, it will now take you only minutes to enter the Zone."
Just one problem: the guy whom Sears hired to put together this recipe book, "Scott C. Lane, an exceptionally talented culinary expert who is also trained in the most advanced food technology," has apparently done all his cooking in a laboratory, and never prepared a thing in a home kitchen.
First off, because most of the recipes rely exclusively on the low-density carbs (vegetables & fruits), the resulting proportions are absolutely laughable. Ten of the 12 omelette recipes in the first 20 pages suggest making omelettes with 1/2 c. of egg white (I estimate you get a pan diameter of about 5 inches with that) and filling it with 6-8 cups of cooked vegetables - "spoon vegetables onto half of omelette; fold over and cook 2-3 additional minutes." Has Scott ever tried this? I'm thinkin' this "omelette" looks like a mountain of vegetables with a little white lace doily on top. One recipe (p. 35) calls for 1/2 c. egg whites, and (I kid you not), 2 oz chicken, 1.5 c. onions, 3 c. bean sprouts, 4 c. mushrooms and 10 c. spinach - a total of 19 cups of omelette fill. Yes, I know spinach reduces a lot in volume when you cook it, but come ON! Even without ANY of the spinach there are 9 cups of contents for the 1/2 c. of omelette wrap.
And that's just for one single portion!! I'm cooking for three every night. I guess Scott has access to an industrial kitchen with restaurant-size pots, but I don't have the storage space for vats big enough to make these recipes for my family! If I followed the recipe on p. 35 literally, I would need room to cook 3 x 19 c. = 57 c. of vegetables. Lord help me if we were the typical family of four - we'd be talking about 76 cups! A little impractical, don't you think?
The ridiculous thing is, these recipes didn't have to be so stupid. All you have to do is convert some of the low-density carbs into a small quantity of high-density carbs, like 1/4 c. of kidney beans or potato; and in fact, 2 of the 10 omelette recipes do just that. When I make one of the stir-fry recipes, I convert part of the pile of low-density carbs into 1/2 c. of brown rice or barley in the bottom of the bowl. Simple, obvious - inexplicably overlooked in this book.
Second, Scott obviously has good help in his kitchen. Many of his recipes require sauteing 1/2 the recipe in one pan, mixing the other half of the ingredients in a bowl, sauteing them in a second pan, then combining the two halves of the recipe. Scott, honey - get a clue from Kraft and Betty Crocker: people prefer to minimize the number of dishes they do after dinner. We don't all have kitchen assistants to clean up after us like you do.
Third, lots of his recipes have way too many ingredients (e.g., p. 83 - 18 ingredients) and far too much chopping, mincing and slicing thinly to be made speedily. And since that is supposedly the reason for this cookbook (remember the "Meals in Minutes" title)... one has to wonder what they're doing in here.
Finally, some of his seasoning is a bit "precious." For example, on p. 48 - 1/8 teaspoon of red wine. I don't think I've ever SEEN a 1/8 teaspoon measure, let alone would I bother to own one. And since that red wine, combined with 1/8 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, is supposed to flavor a full 10 cups of food, I'm skeptical it's even worth the trouble. On p.70, along with the hearty enhancements of garlic, Worcestershire sauce and celery salt, he "spices" the meal with 1 tblspn of "lemon- or lime-flavored spring water." Come on, Scott, it's a taco salad - let's go wild and make it full-strength lemon zest or juice! Granted, this is more of a minor annoyance than a major complaint, but it just reinforces the point that the recipe author is way out of touch with his readership here.
On the other hand, the recipes are marginally useful in getting a feel for how to work with the "block" balancing system. And ironically, the non-recipe chapters of the book are very useful - basically an abridged version of the detailed teachings from the original books. So for those two reasons, I'd give the book 2 stars overall - not useless, but certainly not nearly as good as it could have - and should have - been. I hope Dr. Sears will try again - perhaps this time in collaboration with someone like Good Housekeeping, where they know how to create recipes that actually work for today's busy lifestyles.

Though I've never been to Nantucket, this book absolutely makes me want to go, the next time I'm on the East Coast. In the meantime, I can flip through this gorgeous book and dream. The photography is alluring and recipes so inventive and interesting. Some of them seem a little cheffy, but for the most part they look easy enough to make for a summer dinner party. Plus, the profiles of the restaurantuers make me want to try their recipes! It makes a great gift.

I liked this book for many reasons, and one of them is that it provides nutritional info for each recipe -- including, fat, carbs, protein, fiber and sodium! With so many people having other nutritional interests in addition to GI rating, this is a big plus!
It also provides color photos of almost every recipe, which I find very helpful as well. I look forward to the "Forthcoming" titles that are listed inside. If they are anything like this one, I will buy them as well.
