Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens) Review

Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes and Gardens)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Of the 400+ pages only 190 of them are of any use to me. I use a crockpot because it is simple and tasty cooking. So, I was expecting alot of main dish recipies. And I was also expecting them all to be for the crockpot. There is over 60 pages of recipes that do not use the crockpot. There is over 125 pages dedicated to beverages, soups, breads, and desserts. I have never met anyone who has made hot chocolate or apple bread in a crockpot. Of the 190 pages of worth. only 25 pages were the type of recipies that I was looking for. ie. the chop-it up and throw it in the pot type. everything else involved browning or braising or some other type of stove technique. I guess I'm just the kind of cook who doesn't want to screw around with browning anything. I bought this specifically because of the reviews on amazon. Hopefully this review will speak to those of you like me that are not chefs and are just looking for something easy and tasty to cook.

"Slow & Easy" has been a fast-fix for my family's mealtimes, which had hit the doldrums of SOS "Same-Ol'-Stuff". Now, armed with our first slow cooker [an oval 6-Quart Crock Pot SCCPTM600S with manual settings] and this cookbook, we have a spirit of adventure in the kitchen again. Who would have thought of doing Ginger Bread in a slow cooker?! I did the Pot Roast, too, and bought Cauliflower today to do the curried Cauliflower with potatoes and peas. So many interesting recipes to try! Beautifully designed and printed book.

Betty Crocker's Easy Slow Cooker Dinners: Delicious Dinners the Whole Family Will Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For me, this cookbook had the perfect mix of oldtime favorites and new dishes, clear and helpful instructions, plus great pictures that gave me a good idea of what I was supposed to be aiming for.
I'd definitely recommend this cookbook to anyone in a situation similar to where I was -- I just never seemed to have the time or the patience for regular cooking, but still wanted to make nice meals. On the other hand, I don't know that this would be the best fit for say, a college student giving crock-pot cooking a try -- the dishes may be more elaborate or use more expensive ingredients than they're looking at.

The Gourmet Slow Cooker: Simple and Sophisticated Meals from Around the World Review

The Gourmet Slow Cooker: Simple and Sophisticated Meals from Around the World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've tried three recipes so far from this collection, each one more complex than the last, as I gain my trust in this author. The Baked Eggplant was ridiculously easy (just cut the eggplants into cubes and cook on low for 4-6 hours, then add the seasonings after the cooking is done.) Next I tried the Tuscan White Bean Soup, which was excellent and not at all watery, like most crock-pot soups. Finally, I made a pot of Mexican Chicken in Peanut and Ancho Chili Sauce, and I can finally say that I've found a crock pot book that really does work.
The author encourages crock-pot users to lift the lid and stir while the food is cooking; I heartily agree, because the food ends up well cooked and NOT the watery, insipid mess I usually got. These are recipes that will not taste like a well-meaning, "good-for-you" home economics project. But this means you can't start your supper in the morning and have it done when you're back from work: the result may be watery. That's been my experience with other books, like Judith Finalyson's.
So if you're going to be home and willing to keep an eye on your slow cooker while it's doing its thing, you will be very satisfied with the recipes in this book.

Pillsbury: One-Dish Meals Cookbook: More Than 300 Recipes for Casseroles, Skillet Dishes and Slow-Cooker Meals Review

Don't have fresh thyme growing in a pot on your kitchen window? Just ran out of dry Hungarian mustard? That's okay! The Pillsbury One-Dish Meals Cookbook is a REAL, PRACTICAL cookbook for REAL, PRACTICAL people! For example, the recipe for Flaky Lasagna gets rid of the difficult to work with lasagna noodles and layers delicious meat sauce and healthy spinach and cottage cheese, and tops it off with flaky canned biscuits for an oh-so-fast, tasty meal that looks like you spent hours in the kitchen. If you have a life and prefer not to spend your after work hours slaving in the kitchen or schlepping to the super market, then this cookbook is for you.
I've made 3 or 4 casserole meals for my small family from this book. These meals are quick to prepare, often utilizing canned vegetables and other canned products, and readily available spices, and pop in and out of the oven in no time. Meals are always scrumptious; even the mashed potatoes and ground beef casserole I made last night using left-over ground beef was a treat. Left-overs generally last for 2 to 3 days in our 2 person family. I will advise that you season according to your personal tastes. Our Latin American palettes prefer a little "spice" added to each dish. Color photos abound in this book and 1-2-3 directions puts the ease in eas(e)y. :)

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Two: For the Small Slow Cooker Review

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Two: For the Small Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this after reading a recipe in our local newspaper taken from the book. It has some wonderful, original recipes, with clear instructions, and, even better, guidance about how to buy a small slow cooker and what you can do with it once you have it.
Most of the recipes are too large for the really small 1 1/2 quart slow cooker, though a few fit that size. Fortunately, each recipe includes a recommended cooker size in the instructions.
My only disappointment was that some of the recipes call for ingredients I cannot possibly find in my rural area grocery stores. But if you live in a city or metropolitan area you can probably find all the ingredients.
Finally, do not buy the "350 recipes" cookbook Amazon tries to bundle with this one in the "buy both" listing near the top of the page. It's really awful - I've reviewed it separately.
If you have a 3 quart slow cooker, you'll enjoy this cookbook.

I was pleasantly surprised by this cookbook. I was one of those people who thought slow cookers were just for pot roasts. Not so. In addition to main entrees, Bonet includes recipes for beverages, breakfasts, and desserts. I never would have thought to try some of the foods she suggests in my slow cooker. For example, I tried the Breakfast Casserole and it turned out great! Plus, I enjoyed not having to cook breakfast in the morning. It was nice to have it ready and waiting for me when I got up.
I've also tried the Peachy Chicken and it was good too. Next on my list are the recipes for Santa Fe Chicken and Acorn Squash. I'm glad I have this cookbook. I think I'm really going to save some time!

Campbell's Weeknight Cooking Review

Campbell's Weeknight Cooking
Average Reviews:

As a newlywed and busy college student, this book has been a lifesaver! I bought it on a whim, but this is one time when a cookbook has changed my entire outlook on cooking! I refuse to cook anything that makes me spend time mincing or calls for 1/3 tsp of something they don't have in our small town grocery store. This book has quick, easy meals that are healthy and fulfill my husband's hearty appetite! He and I have loved everything I've made so far! Another bonus: there are not a ton of ingredients for each recipe and everything listed is inexpensive! We are definitely on a budget and we are able to enjoy a nice dinner with these recipes! There is a plastic cover around the outside to make for easy clean-up if something gets spilled on the cover. My book is not spiral bound, but generally stays open while cooking. Also, almost every recipe has a picture which helps me understand what the final product should look like and even offers a variety of sides to think about adding. This is a must-have for anyone like me. Food is important, but with a busy life on a budget, I don't have money or time to bother with multiple ingredients and difficult instructions. I need easy, cheap, quick meals that will keep us healthy and happy! This cookbook helps do exactly that!

5-Ingredient Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes and Gardens Cooking)

(More customer reviews)
So our baby gets up every day at 4:30am, and by dinnertime, I'm ready for bed, too tired to stand let alone cook. My husband, while great at cleaning, is lousy at cooking, so I got a crock pot for my birthday.
I bought this book because it looked like the recipies were interesting, not just variations on beef stew.
WOW, the recipies are amazing in this book! I may never order pizza again. Everything is quick and easy to prepare, all the measurements and cook times are correct, and there are a bunch of different flavors to sample.
This cookbook also uses a lot of frozen vegetables in the recipies, which is a must for a busy family. The Mediterrinean Chicken is super yummy, very non-traditional for a crock pot. The Original Beef stew is so good my husband practically licked the bowl, and the Cola Pot Roast is fun to make and delicious to eat.
People think I'm crazy to use my crock pot so much, and then they taste the food, and all of the suddent they're dragging out their crock pots and using this cookbook as well.
By the way, many of the roast recipies ask you to brown the meat. It's super fast and easy, and definitely worth the trouble.
