9 x 13: The Pan That Can (Better Homes & Gardens Cooking) Review

9 x 13: The Pan That Can (Better Homes and Gardens Cooking)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This cookbook is filled with bodacious recipes. I couldn't believe it when I started going through to find any recipes I might be interested in trying and saw how many of my old tried-and-true favorites are included. I finally stopped flagging the ones I wanted to try when I got to page 281. I had run out of sticky notes. My book looks like it has feathers!
Seriously though, I have tried 5 recipes so far: the classic lasagna on page 56 (very good), meatball and polenta casserole on page 92 (good but needs work for my family),zucchini-sausage casserole on page 121 (fabulous), corn bread for a crowd on page 272 (not iron skillet good but very tasty), and coca-cola cake on page 295 (just like my 30 year old original). At no time does this cookbook profess to be completely "healthy" or "easy" or "quick". But, if you can gather ingredients and then follow simple directions I just don't see how you can go wrong. I make it a point to always follow a recipe exactly the first time, then make any adjustments to suit my family when I make it the next time. These adjustments are noted on the recipe page. This book will be no different but I just couldn't be happier with all the choices I now have, all contained in one book. And every recipe is not for cooked foods either, there are many dishes which don't require cooking, just preparation. Dishes such as layered salads, and gelatin desserts. Also included are 16 vegetarian entree recipes plus many in the lasagna and casserole sections which could be adapted to be vegetarian with no trouble at all. There are breakfast dishes, coffee cakes and french toast, meats, poultry dishes, fish and seafood, bars and brownies, plus catagories I've already mentioned. I am very impressed with the recipes.
What I am not so impressed with is the book itself. I am not a fan of spiral binding for any book but I bought this one knowing it was bound in that way so I can't actually complain about that. I don't like it but I won't complain. What I really don't like is the lack of pictures showing finished recipes. There are 16 pictures of 16 finished dishes. All 16 are located together in the first quarter of the book. It would have been nice to have had each picture at or near the recipe it showed. Also, the paper quality is not quite as good as I would want it to be. I don't know if these pages will be able to stand up to the kind of wear and tear one of my cookbooks takes (and I try to be VERY careful but accidents happen). Also, the color chosen for the major pages is an orangey-pumpkin which I don't like at all. I also miss index tabs. Those tabs make it so much easier to navigate within a cookbook. And some thicker paper for the chapter divisions would have been nice.
Having outlined all of the drawbacks, I still say that this is one whale of a good cookbook. I already have my plan in mind for what I'm going to do if the pages begin to tear away from the spiral.

LaBelle Cuisine: Recipes to Sing About Review

LaBelle Cuisine: Recipes to Sing About
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was taught how to cook by numerous relatives(from Georgia, Virginia and New Jersey) and I have had people to tell me that I could throw down with some cooking; but after trying some of Patti's recipes, people were telling me that I need to be a professional caterer! I own tons of recipe books, but this one lives up to Ms. Labelles' reputation as an excellent cook. I cooked for 18 people this christmas; not only did every one on her recipes I tried score a hit: (String beans a labelle, good and cheap pot roast, peach cobbler, over the rainbow macaroni and cheese); Patti enhanced my cooking, just by suggesting everyday ingredients rather than buying some outrageously exotic spices and seasonings. One word of caution, use only some of these recipes for special occasions, cause if you eat this on the regular, you will be on this website looking for a Tae-Bo tape afterwards (cause I'm looking for one now). Here's to REAL SOUL FOOD! THANKS PATTI! :)

Bradley Ogden's Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Review

Bradley Ogden's Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

I bought this book many years ago after a wonderful brunch at Ogden's Lark Creek Inn and I've cooked from it many times. It's especially nice for homey dishes with an elegant touch. Many of the ideas were sourced originally from Ogden's cooking roots in Michigan and California and feature locally available produce and meats.
After all these years I still peruse this book for new ideas when we expect out of town company. Everyone always loves the results!

Simply Suppers: Comfort Food You Can Get on the Table in No Time Flat Review

Simply Suppers: Comfort Food You Can Get on the Table in No Time Flat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Simply Suppers was a delicious journey of dinners for my family. I was excited at the prospect of reviewing a cookbook as I love to cook and explore new recipes. Simply Suppers is full of easy to make comfort foods that your family will enjoy. The recipes generally do not have items that are hard to find or abnormal. Jennifer uses carefully combined spices to bring a variety of flavor into her foods. The book had a wide range of selections for dinner time! I found myself marking many of the recipes with a post-it for further exploration. For the purposes of reviewing this cook book I settled on 3 of the 4 recipes I wanted to make. The fourth, Mac'n'Cheese with a Twist, was a little too expensive in cost of ingredients(white cheddar and Gruyere Cheeses) for me at this time so it will have to wait, but I will be making it and I am excited to discover the wonderful flavor I am sure it has! Below are the recipes I have explored and made for this review.
Corn Chowder: An absolute favorite food for me, this recipe brought me back home to cold days in New England and the warmth of my favorite wholesome and comforting chowder. It was everything I have been craving and more! Jennifer combined wonderful ingredients to make a vivid and sensual flavor that even my children loved! This recipe was a favorite of my entire family including my daughters who said "Mom, you make the best soup ever" and "Mommy, more soup"! Everything about this chowder, from the flavor to the texture and ease of making, was perfect.
I substituted canned corn instead of fresh corn for this recipe. I do not feel it took away from the flavor of the chowder, but it did save me some time in making the dinner for my family. The meal was extremely budget friendly and easy to make. My children and husband loved it. The recipe gets bonus points for tasting just as great re-heated as it did right off the stove!

Chicken Parmesan: I made this meal for a family dinner night which included my parents and in-laws. Everyone enjoyed this dish! Due to the amount of people (8) I had over for dinner my husband's help was required to pull this meal off. I loved the flavor of the coating Jennifer uses for her chicken parmesan. I received many compliments on this dish which was ego boosting! While the process was very simple and easy to follow the time for this dish was a little lengthier than the Chowder. I estimated the total time to make this dish being an hour and 30 minutes from start to plate. The outcome was well worth the time spent. I feel this dish was one that will improve which each new attempt at making it.
Peanut Butter Cup Tart: I doubled this recipe, which ended up making 3 tarts, and sent a tart home with my dad and another to work with my husband. My husband came home quite stunned due to the amount of people asking him about the cookbook I made this tart from and the unlimited compliments he received! I have to admit at this point that my husband made this recipe! I was taking care of an under the weather daughter and read him the ingredients as well as instructions from a rocking chair! The tart was very easy to make and he did a great job! I was impressed with the ease of this tasty dessert! I did not have time to make the crust myself so I bought a store brand crust in Oreo, chocolate and graham cracker crust. The tart was great in each of these. The author actually suggested the store bough Oreo crust if you did not have time to make the cookie crust yourself. I personally felt the recipe needed more peanut butter for my taste because I am not a fan of cream cheese. The flavor resembled that of a cheese cake that would be peanut butter flavored.
Overall:
These recipes were easy to make with clear directions, wonderful flavor and great reviews from my unsuspecting taste testers! I think it is a great cookbook with a wonderful variety. The recipes vary in budget and are full of flavor. It truly is a wholesome home cooking dinner cookbook. They are delicious and filling! I still have many recipes marked "to make" and I look forward to it! The book is not a quick make and serve cookbook, but the dishes are well worth the time and effort spent to make them. I do wish the author had included an estimated prep and cook time with each recipe. I went into each one blindly, not sure of how long it would take me to make each. I did like how she gave cooking tips, time saving tips and basic recipes for sauces, chicken stock, pie crust, and more in the back! I would highly suggest Simply Suppers to moms and cooks everywhere. No matter what your skill range, this book is for you. The recipes are challenging enough for seasoned cooks yet easy to follow and understand for beginners.

This is one of the top five cookbooks I plan on rescuing in case of house fire. Just kidding, but I would immediately go out and get it again! Buy this book -- it's worth it just for the mac and cheeze, orange chick'n, and buffalo bites recipes. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Did I mention the mac and cheeze? It's not a nutritional yeast sauce! It's incredible!
This book has a good range of simple idea-type recipes -- as in, recipes you can really put together quickly and throw in your own substitutions -- plus more still-easy-but-complex-in-flavor recipes for the scratch cook. Oh and I can't say enough about the barbecue sauce, too. I'm picky picky picky about BBQ sauce and the one in this book plus the one in Veganomicon are to live for.
This is my first attempt to start reviewing some of the zillions of cookbooks I own. Happy cooking!

Taste of Home: Busy Family Cookbook: 370 Recipes for Weeknight Dinners Review

Taste of Home: Busy Family Cookbook: 370 Recipes for Weeknight Dinners
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this cookbook a month ago and have tried several different recipes. So far my family has loved every single one of them, and there are a lot more that I can't wait to try. This cookbook is designed for busy families (in case the title didn't tip you off); if you have the time, energy, and desire to cook exotic and extravagant meals, this is not the cookbook for you. But if you're like most families I know, and so busy that you have the pizza place's number memorized, then you should definitely give this book a chance. Regarding an earlier review, I agree that this is a good cookbook for a new cook, but I would also recommend it to any busy family, even if the cook has some experience. It's easy to get stuck in a "dinner rut" when you're constantly needing fast & easy meals; this cookbook is the cure. I'd also recommend it for families with picky eaters, as the recipes can satisfy the adults' desire for something different without being so exotic that the kids won't eat it. I've looked at other cookbooks and haven't found any that had such a large number of recipes that I wanted to try. The recipes are all quick and easy, and they don't require obscure ingredients. I love that most of the recipes include a photograph and a brief comment. I used to agonize over what I'd fix for dinner on weeknights; now I'm excited, thinking "which recipe should I try next?" This cookbook is well worth the money--5 stars.

Nigella Bites: From Family Meals to Elegant Dinners -- Easy, Delectable Recipes For Any Occasion Review

Nigella Bites: From Family Meals to Elegant Dinners -- Easy, Delectable Recipes For Any Occasion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I approached this cookbook skeptically. It can be difficult to separate the cooking from the cult of personality, so to critique the recipes is to critique the woman. The cookbook has lots of chatter and lots of white space, but Nigella Lawson is a charming woman, so the chatter is friendly and companionable, and the book has lots of white space but it is slender and elegant and filled with beautiful photographs of every dish. Sections are organized as Breakfast, Comfort Food, TV Dinners, Rainy Day, Trashy, etc. These are more colorful than helpful, but one can find recipes by name or ingredient in the well-constructed index. No nutritional information is given for the recipes, but that's just as well.
I've tried eight recipes so far (and have many more marked to try). Of those eight, I would say three were resounding successes: the icing for the chocolate fudge cake will be at the top of my list whenever I need an airy but flavorful frosting; the sweet corn pudding was very good; and the double potato and halloumi bake was delicious though I couldn't find the sheep's milk cheese required for two of the book's recipes, even at a gourmet cheese shop. Two recipes were servable if not very exciting. And three of the eight recipes did not work for me at all. My Mozzarella in Carrozza, for example, never resulted in a stretchy warm concoction that I could pull lustily from my teeth, my neck outstretched in voluptuous splendor, though I tried several times.
Three additional comments: Several of the recipes I tried benefited from the addition of spice. Secondly, recipes have been lazily retooled from the metric units originally used, so instructions often call for multiple multi-measurement ingredients -- 1 cup + 2 T flour, 1/4 cup + 1 t sugar, etc etc. Finally, quite a few recipes call for self-rising flour; you can make the equivalent of 1 cup of self-rising flour by mixing 1 cup of all-purpose flour + 1-1/2 teaspoons of baking powder + 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
Ultimately this is not a flawless effort, but Nigella has the charm and talent to pull off a successful personality cookbook, and though results might be mixed, the good recipes are archetypal. That ain't bad.

What Can I Bring? Cookbook (Cake Mix Doctor) Review

What Can I Bring Cookbook (Cake Mix Doctor)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a good cook and baker, but every time I have to bring something to a get-together, I end up obsessing over what to bring. I fall back on the same old things so much that I get bored, even though people seem to enjoy what I bring. Recently, I have been asked to bring food for various organizations/activities--probably at least once a month. This book, which is under $20.00, is well worth the price. It has more than 200 recipes, and there is a very good variety of recipes, including vegetarian ones or ones that could be easily made vegetarian/vegan. That's important to me because I have a vegetarian daughter. It is great that the author provides information on how to increase the amount of servings if practical, and provides a time-line of how long to expect to take to make the dish. Her notes on "how to tote" the dishes are helpful, since getting the dish there intact is important. There are some recipes at the end of the book for gift-giving and they will be wonderful for Christmas gifts. I like that the author did all my trial-and-error work for me--testing what goes over well at a pot-luck, is fairly simply to make, and travels well. I want to buy more of her books after purchasing this one, because her recipes are "real life, without too many exotic ingredients, and food that people would actually eat.

Main dishes for a party, from Southern-Style Pulled Pork to Creamy White Bean and Spinach Lasagne. Desserts (of course, 25 of them), and a full chapter of loaves and other gifts from the kitchen, including Chocolate Sour Cherry Bread and Sun-Cooked Peach Preserves. Each recipe comes with Tote Notes (how best to transport the dish), Big Batch (how to multiply the dish), and When You Arrive (how to put the finishing touches on the dish). Plus there are "Grab & Gos"—super-quick recipes—for each section, etiquette tips for working in someone else's kitchen, and a "Notes" area for each recipe, to jot down tips and log in when you made the dish and for what occasion, so you don't repeat yourself.
