Betty Crocker's Quick & Easy Cookbook Review

Betty Crocker's Quick and Easy Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has some really good, quick & easy recipes. I bought this book since I don't have a lot of time to do cooking when I get home from work & it's given me some really good meals. The meals are so easy to make, most only have about 6 or less ingredients. My mother saw my book, liked the recipes so I bought a copy for her. My husband has made several recipes as well. He was impressed that the prep & cook time actually took 30 minutes or less & recipes are so easy!
A lot of the new recipe books contain funky recipes, but I loved this one because I would actually eat any in this book. Among some tasty recipes are Chicken Marsala, Thai Chicken Wraps, Skillet Chicken Parmigiana, One pot potatoes & chicken, Sloppy Joe rotini, Parmesan-Dijon Chicken, Five-layer mexican dip, Fiesta taco salad, Stove top lasagna, Southwest cheese and pasta, stuffed french toast, among many many others.
The neat thing about this book is that in the beginning of each section, it gives you some quick 1-Step ideas (for example - Poultry, it gives one step seasoning ideas such as italian seasoning, mesquite, cajun seasoning, etc.) that don't require an actual recipe.
Although this has many common meal ideas, many have a little twist that most of us wouldn't think of. The recipes are really quick & easy & delicious!

Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls: Facsimile Edition Review

Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls: Facsimile Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have several copies of the original Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls and have found deletions of some of the old recipes in the new reproduction. There is no Easy Orange Cake and Clear Orange Sauce in the new. I noted several other changes too! On p.62 in the old is the recipe for Chocolate Fudge Milk Shake and in the new is Cake and Frosting Mix.
I was very excited about hearing that they were going to reprint this recipe book as my original copy was completely falling apart. I had bought several on an auction site to hand down to my kids that were not in good shape. I was going to buy the new one until I went through it and found that it is a revised reproduction and not a genuine reproduction. I would have liked them to have revised it by giving the exact old recipes and writing what changes were to be made if items were no longer available.

Simple recipes, "the basics" including a a chapter where it teaches you how to make a traditional thanksgiving dinner. Let me tell you that I did it this november 28th and guess what? It turned out to be great! My family couldn't belive I've done everything by myself. And it wasn't such a big effort 'cause it teaches you how to organize every single thing.

For me, this is a perfect cookbook. I don't have a lot of room in my kitchen. I want meals I can cook quickly. The recipes is food that you pretty much throw together in a hurry. Even the more intricate recipes are easy. These are the kind of meals that women cooked in the 50s, '60s and '70s before the Food Network got middle America women (and yes men too) wanting to be gourmet chefs. If I had the time and especially the room, it would be fun to try more elaborate dishes. But for people who want something more than frozen meals, this is a great cookbook.

For me, this cookbook had the perfect mix of oldtime favorites and new dishes, clear and helpful instructions, plus great pictures that gave me a good idea of what I was supposed to be aiming for.
I'd definitely recommend this cookbook to anyone in a situation similar to where I was -- I just never seemed to have the time or the patience for regular cooking, but still wanted to make nice meals. On the other hand, I don't know that this would be the best fit for say, a college student giving crock-pot cooking a try -- the dishes may be more elaborate or use more expensive ingredients than they're looking at.

The trouble with a lot of Thanksgiving cookbooks is that they throw so many new and quite exotic dishes at the reader. I think most people still prefer their Thanksgiving with all of the traditional dishes.
Betty Crocker's book does just that while still giving you some new things to try, without making them too intimidating for the novice cook. Add to that the best sections of the book may be the sections on planning your dinner from shopping to all the make-aheads to getting the turkey ready for the oven.
You'll find all of the great traditional fare in this book with straight forward and easy to follow recipes no matter what the size of your gathering.
If your a traditionalist like me, then this is the book for you.

Betty Crocker Ultimate Bisquick Cookbook: Hundreds of new recipes, plus back-of-the-box favorites Review

Betty Crocker Ultimate Bisquick Cookbook: Hundreds of new recipes, plus back-of-the-box favorites
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you own any of the other Bisquick books on the market than you have all the recipes in this one. It's called "Ultimate" I guess just because it combines the impossibly easy pie, bisquick I and bisquick II and the dessert one into one big book. It's a great cookbook regardless. But if you already own the others then you don't really need this one. There are few pictures in this cookbook.
The first chapter covers the Bisquick "classics" you know the ones we've eaten since childhood. The easy pizza pie, chicken fingers, peach cobbler, pancakes, milk biscuits, etc.
Chapter 2 covers favorite recipes for today. Examples are cheese garlic biscuits, banana nut bread, easy hamburger pot pie, strawberry shortcake, etc. if you have Bisquick I I think you have all these recipes.
Chapter 8 was the Impossibly Easy Pies all the same recipes as the little cookbook version by the same name.
The one recipe that was not included which for us is a Bisquick staple is the Sausage-Cheese Puffs. It's a biscuit that I have made and taken to many a potluck and everyone leaves asking for the recipe. You can change up the sausage to hot or italian or even chorizo and it's a perfect biscuit for whatever event you want. You can make them big or little and they're good for a breakfast biscuit or a dinner roll.
The recipe is:
1 pound bulk sausage (flavor is your choice).
3 c. bisquick
16 oz. shredded cheddar cheese (or whatever flavor you choose)
3/4 c. water (I use a whole cup but original recipe calls for 3/4c.)
In a skillet, cook and crumble sausage until no longer pink; drain. In a bowl, combine bisquick and cheese; stir in sausage. Add water and mix with a fork until moistened. Drop by tablespoonfuls on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 400F for 12-15 minutes or until puffed and golden brown. Baked puffs may be frozen; reheat for 7-9 minutes and doesn't have to be thawed first.
I freeze a batch to use for breakfast throughout the week. If you make them smaller and use italian sausage, parmesan and add some chopped garlic you could use for a spaghetti dinner. If you make with chorizo and monterey jack cheese it would be mexican. So you can change it up how you feel.

Cookbook says there are hundreds of new recipes in this cookbook but to change a recipe from peach cobbler to cherry does that really qualify as a "new" recipe? So I'm not sure about the new recipes.
This is a great fall back to cookbook and would help the beginner cook learn as well. It's not necessarily healthy as you are using a prepackage biscuit mix. But nonetheless will make meals to remember (if not for your waistline). LOL.
This one is not necessary if you own the other 2-3 cookbooks that are on the market already.

Betty Crocker 4-Ingredient Dinners Review

Betty Crocker 4-Ingredient Dinners
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The cover of this book says: "Prep in Minutes," "Make It Delicious," and "Easy Homemade Tonight." Well, 1 out of 3 is true. You certainly can prep these dishes in minutes, but the flavor is not delicious and definitely not homemade. The vast majority of dishes in this book consist of a can of this, a box of this, and some bottled sauce or other. While this is not bad on nights when you are just desperate to get anything on the table fast, I would definitely not call them "recipes"--they are more like ideas. To be honest, you could come up with most of these recipes yourself. For example, throw pasta, jarred pasta sauce, pre-cooked packaged meatballs, and olives in a skillet and--voila--"One-Pan Pasta and Meatballs." It's not that it's a bad idea, it's just that it's just that--an idea, not a recipe. If you are looking for real flavor and real home-cooked food with 4-ingredients, please be aware that this book relies almost exclusively on canned, jarred, bottled, and/or frozen goods (not surprising since General Mills owns the Betty Crocker label and I'm sure they want you to buy their products). The health-conscious should also be wary since processed foods generally have much higher sodium, sugar, and preservative content than fresh, whole ingredients. I can recommend this "cookbook" to someone who has no idea how to cook, is on a tight budget, and needs ideas for what to make fast, but I would suggest trying to substitute some fresh ingredients where possible. It could also be a good book to have on hand as an emergency source for ideas on very busy days (that's why I have it). It's not totally useless, but as far as cookbooks go . . . well, it isn't really a cookbook at all.

Betty Crocker Bisquick II Cookbook: Easy, Delicious Dinners, Desserts, Breakfasts and More (Betty Crocker Books) Review

I was given the first Bisquick cookbook as a gift a few years ago and at the time, I thought using 'that stuff' was for novices and/or fast food types. It took a few successful recipes from that book to knock the food snobbery out of me!
When Bisquick II was released, I wasn't sure that I needed an additional cookbook for the product, but I looked at it in a bookstore and then ordered it online. And the good news is: it's as good as the first one! The first recipe I tried was Vegetable-Cheese Strata. I modified it by using the Reduced-Fat Bisquick, Egg Beaters and 2% fat Cheddar cheese. It was wonderful!! I can only imagine what the 'high test' version must be like!
Next up was Glazed Raisin-Cinnamon Biscuits. This recipe couldn't be any easier to make and each biscuit is only 3 Weight Watchers' points. It takes about 15 minutes to prepare and 10 minutes to bake, so it is a good choice for people who don't have a lot of time in the morning but are a little tired of cold cereal.
Impossibly Easy Vegetable Pie is definitely a keeper. I suppose if they called it quiche, which is what it is, it might cause some to turn up their noses. Again, I used the Reduced-Fat Bisquick, Egg Beaters and lower fat Cheddar cheese and the results were scrumptious.
Aside from the recipes, I like the many illustrations that appear throughout the book. I, like most people, enjoy seeing what the finished dish looks like and Bisquick II doesn't disappoint. Included with each recipe are suggested variations called 'Betty's TIP'. Very importantly, each recipe includes nutritional information for persons following a Weight Watchers' type diet, diabetics and Low-Carb dieters. Since most of the recipes use the Original Bisquick mix, you may be able to improve your dietary profile by adjusting the ingredients similar to what I did with the above recipes.
In short, this is a good cookbook! It is a godsend for people who have little time to spend in the kitchen but don't want to indulge in fast food. It will pay for itself in no time and your family will love the results. You may even be able to get the kids interested in trying their hand at cooking with these simple recipes!
