Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens) Review

Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes and Gardens)
Average Reviews:

Of the 400+ pages only 190 of them are of any use to me. I use a crockpot because it is simple and tasty cooking. So, I was expecting alot of main dish recipies. And I was also expecting them all to be for the crockpot. There is over 60 pages of recipes that do not use the crockpot. There is over 125 pages dedicated to beverages, soups, breads, and desserts. I have never met anyone who has made hot chocolate or apple bread in a crockpot. Of the 190 pages of worth. only 25 pages were the type of recipies that I was looking for. ie. the chop-it up and throw it in the pot type. everything else involved browning or braising or some other type of stove technique. I guess I'm just the kind of cook who doesn't want to screw around with browning anything. I bought this specifically because of the reviews on amazon. Hopefully this review will speak to those of you like me that are not chefs and are just looking for something easy and tasty to cook.

Weight Watchers Make It in Minutes: Easy Recipes in 15, 20, and 30 Minutes Review

Weight Watchers Make It in Minutes: Easy Recipes in 15, 20, and 30 Minutes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, I do enjoy this cookbook. Everything I have made from it has been wonderful, and if you like the recipes in "Simply the Best: 250 Prizewinning Family Recipes" then I think you will like the recipes in this book. They are slightly more gourmet and less homey than the recipes in "Simply the Best," so if "Simply the Best" was pushing the edge of the exotic envelope for you, then you might prefer a different WW cookbook than this one for your next purchase.
The book is organized into three color-coded sections (15 minute, 20 minute, and 30 minutes) and each section is organized into breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes. Many of the lunch recipes would also work well for dinner or as part of dinner. This is the sort of cookbook that you will enjoy sitting down with and sticking post-it notes to promising recipes.
However, I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 because the preparation times for the recipes are frequently deceptive. They are not the times for fixing these recipes from start to finish, they assume that you have already performed your preps. So, a 30 minute recipe might not include the time for pulling all of the ingredients out of the pantry and refrigerator, and tasks such as slicing raw chicken breasts or steak into strips, chopping onions, mincing garlic, chopping parsley, or peeling, deseeding, and slicing cucumbers. The cookbook "Desperation Dinners" by Beverly Mills and Alicia Ross (not a lowfat cookbook), for example, is truly a 20 minute start-to-finish recipe cookbook; this one is not, although in most cases the actual time will not be too much more than the stated time. One exception is the Apricot Glazed Pork Skewers with Mango Quinoa, which is supposed to be ready in 30 minutes. Even if your preps are all ready ahead of time I think you'd be hard-pressed to prepare this dish in under 45 minutes. The 30 minutes includes thinly slicing 1-1/2 pounds of pork tenderloin and threading it onto 12 skewers, which alone took me a good 15 minutes.
One thing I like about this cookbook is that it finally got me to try cooking with Fat-Free Half-and-Half, and I have been very pleased with the recipes that use this, such as a Creamy Cauliflower Soup (saute leeks in a little olive oil, add frozen cauliflower and canned chicken broth, simmer, puree, then finish with FF Half-and-Half, nutmeg, and S&P). My favorites recipes in this book, so far, are the Banana Chocolate Chip Pancakes, Greek Chicken Pasta Toss, Chicken with Spicy Marmalade Glaze, Chicken Tacos with Salsa Verde Cream, and Sesame Glazed Shrimp with Snow Peas and Baby Corn.

Make Ahead Meals for Busy Moms Review

Make Ahead Meals for Busy Moms
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Perhaps "Don't Panic, dinners in the freezer" would be a better selection. This book is a misnomer- it doesn't help you plan ahead for more than 24 hours. Anyone can figure out to do their prep work in advance then store the food in the fridge. Other negative aspects
1. no photos
2. recipes include things like "Cheese Whiz"
3. directions are for one meal at a time, (to save time- I like to make more than one meal)
4. very large type (could be a plus for some people- it make me dizzy)
5. baking instructions are for odd sized pans
I will donate this book to the library- not worth the shelf space.

Best of Craig Claiborne: 1,000 Recipes from His New York Times Food Columns and Four of His Classic Cookbooks Review

Best of Craig Claiborne: 1,000 Recipes from His New York Times Food Columns and Four of His Classic Cookbooks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book belongs to a special class of cookbooks where you get a whole lot of recipes for a low price per recipe. These books are not like `The Joy of Cooking' or `James Beard's American Cookery' where you get a lot of advice on cuts of meat, types of potatoes, and techniques for making an especially good pie crust. This type of book contains mostly bare bones recipes. They are one of the most common to find on the discount pile in the Borders foyer.
But, this book is a little different from most books of this class.
First, it is a collection of recipes from Craig Claiborne and Pierre Franey, and that is something special. As Paul Prudhomme states in his introduction, Craig Claiborne is one of the three most influential figures in American culinary writing in the last fifty years, along with James Beard and Julia Child. I suspect Claiborne's influence worked as much or more behind the scenes and may be less durable than the works of Beard and Child. What was public was almost entirely done in daily newspaper columns and reviews. Much of his other work was in the support of charity events and in the support of the careers of up and coming journalists such as Jim Villas and chefs such as Jeremiah Tower.
Second, this collection gains cachet by being the best of newspaper columns in the New York Times. Some very discerning editors picked them over at least twice. First, they were selected to appear in the paper. Then, they were selected from the best of these to appear in this book.
Third, the variety of dishes in this book is outstanding. The range of dishes is far better than, for example, a collection of 1000 Chinese dishes or the best 800 Jewish recipes. These come from around the world, from some of the best chefs in the world. My favorite finds are recipes culled from Danny Kaye, who has the reputation of being quite literally one of the finest Chinese cooks in the world, in his time. The sad fact is that the only remains of that talent are in the occasional recipe in collections such as this.
Fourth, unlike earlier large `New York Times' cookbooks edited by Claiborne, these recipes contain headnotes citing the source of the recipe and tips on their execution. The book also gives an excellent index of recipes by contributor, which is the way in which I was able to locate the recipes from Mr. Kaye. I'm certain these headnotes came from the newspaper articles in which the recipes were embedded.
If you like to have access to a large variety of dishes but do not wish to have a large cookbook library, this is the book for you. The closest competitor to this book may be `The New New York Times Cookbook' that has even more recipes, but no headnotes. This was my first cookbook and I believe every recipe I made from it was sound.
Highly recommended for all, especially those with a budget.

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Two: For the Small Slow Cooker Review

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Two: For the Small Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this after reading a recipe in our local newspaper taken from the book. It has some wonderful, original recipes, with clear instructions, and, even better, guidance about how to buy a small slow cooker and what you can do with it once you have it.
Most of the recipes are too large for the really small 1 1/2 quart slow cooker, though a few fit that size. Fortunately, each recipe includes a recommended cooker size in the instructions.
My only disappointment was that some of the recipes call for ingredients I cannot possibly find in my rural area grocery stores. But if you live in a city or metropolitan area you can probably find all the ingredients.
Finally, do not buy the "350 recipes" cookbook Amazon tries to bundle with this one in the "buy both" listing near the top of the page. It's really awful - I've reviewed it separately.
If you have a 3 quart slow cooker, you'll enjoy this cookbook.

Cook This, Not That Easy and Awesome 350-Calorie Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am shocked at how engrossed I am with this book. I want to cook every single recipe! The biggest surprise--aside from learning how many calories I could save by cooking for myself--was how motivating the recipes are. Beautiful pictures and simplified cooking tips turn complex dishes into super-easy recipes. Many of the recipes even come with variations in case you can't find a certain ingredient or just want more variety. Here are my four favorites so far:*Red Pepper Alfredo - AMAZING dish, and I saved 830 calories and $10 over the same meal at Olive Garden.
*Loaded Calzone - Far easier than I ever imagined, and I saved 1,025 (!) calories and $4.50 over Pizza Hut's Meaty P'Zone Pizza
*French Toast Stuffed with Strawberries -Whole-wheat toast stuffed with ricotta cheese, strawberries, honey, and almonds. Yum. I will definitely be making this again! And I saved 810 calories and $11.40 over IHOP's version.
*Curry with Cauliflower & Butternut Squash - I had no idea I was capable of making curry. Or that I could save 717 calories and $8.50 in the process. My kitchen skills are improving, I'm motivated to cook, and I already feel healthier. And if I don't feel like cooking one night, I'll just dive into the chapter dedicated to 10-minute meals. That should be easy enough. Though, to be honest, nothing I've cooked so far has taken me much more than 20.

AM to PM Cooking (Volume 1)

Having purchased this gem on the recommendation of a friend, I am surprised at how often I turn to Jennifer McMillan-Parento's AM to PM cooking. This cookbook is filled with practical, easy to make, kid friendly classics. And these recipes are delicious. It is a constant source of inspiration (mostly because the ingredients are in my kitchen already). Also, most of these recipes require little to no prep time. I'm admittedly not the best chef, but with Jennifer McMillan-Parento's recipes, I enjoy compliments and licked clean plates. I hope she does another.

I was pleasantly surprised by this cookbook. I was one of those people who thought slow cookers were just for pot roasts. Not so. In addition to main entrees, Bonet includes recipes for beverages, breakfasts, and desserts. I never would have thought to try some of the foods she suggests in my slow cooker. For example, I tried the Breakfast Casserole and it turned out great! Plus, I enjoyed not having to cook breakfast in the morning. It was nice to have it ready and waiting for me when I got up.
I've also tried the Peachy Chicken and it was good too. Next on my list are the recipes for Santa Fe Chicken and Acorn Squash. I'm glad I have this cookbook. I think I'm really going to save some time!

People love the convenience of their slow cookers. What could be better than walking in the door after a hard day's work to the smell of beef stew, ready and waiting? A beef stew that only requires three ingredients, that's what! The problem with most slow cooker recipes is that they require lots of ingredients and steps before you actually "fix it and forget it." Mad Hungry: Feeding Men and Boys Review

Mad Hungry: Feeding Men and Boys

At first pass, I almost overlooked this lovely title BECAUSE of the title. I don't have any children, I don't eat beef and often avoid the heavy and greasy staples associated with men, and my husband is my partner in the kitchen -- not someone I wait on hand and foot. Inside this beautiful book, the reader will not only find a solid collection of easy and delicious recipies, but equal parts useful advice about food, family togetherness, cooking, and auto-biography. Impressive credentials as a Martha Stewart big-wig aside, Lucinda Scala Quinn's food is accessible, familiar and yet inventive, and can be cooked using the budget and pantry of an average American family. This is a handsomely styled book filled with healthful tasty plates equally worthy of a cherished Sunday dinner and harried weeknights that scream for Chinese take-out or pizza.
Scala Quinn is a regular on the PBS show "Everyday Food." Regardless of your gender or how many "men and boys" you have to feed, fans of the show and the magazine will love this collection of 10-ingredient or less recipies that can be simply prepared in 30 - 60 minutes.
The cover art sort of screams at you, but Lucinda Scala Quinn's voice is calm, patient, funny, and real. This is one book you are better off not judging by the cover.

Slow Cookers For Dummies Review

Slow Cookers For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not so much a recipe book as a manual that teaches you how best to use a crock pot. It teaches you how to convert your favorite recipes to a slow cooker, which is my favorite part of the book. It gives you some "master" recipes (meat sauce, chicken broth) that you can put in the freezer and use as a base for fast, delicious meals. That part of the book is also brilliant.
There aren't many recipes, but the great thing about the recipes they do have is that they are NOT the "add a can of condensed mushroom soup" variety. There are some hearty chicken and potato recipes that my family just adores - using real food such as herbes de provence and fresh mushrooms. But at the same time, the recipes are not complicated and the ingredients are easy to find in a regular grocery store.

The Good-to-Go Cookbook: Take-along Food, Quick Suppers, and Satisfying Snacks for On-The-Go Families
Average Reviews:

You don't have to be Martha Stewart to prepare healthy meals at home, so says Kathleen Hanna in her introduction and after just a quick flip though this book's pages, you'll see that's true.
Mrs. Hanna advocates getting organized by making a plan for your weekly meals and to plan your meals around your families activities. This is, after all, a cookbook for families on the go. She also advocates having your teens cook some of the meals with you. That seems like a good idea. Also, she gives plenty of hints on how to shop, so that you save money and that's always good. There is also a chapter on fast breakfasts and another on snacks, both aimed at the family with teenagers in the house. It's good to get some food in them before they rush out the door.
But the essence of any cookbook is the recipes themselves. Many of these can be made in under thirty minutes and that's important for busy families. We've done the Texas Ranch Steak and the Cheesy Linguine and they did come in under a half hour and they both came out just fine, I'll be making them again.
And there is a chapter on 15-minutes dishes, half the time of the 30-minute recipes I mentioned above and I tried the Barbecued Salmon Fillets and it did take me a little longer than 15 minutes, 19 to be exact as I had to light the grill and wait for it to heat up. There's a whole gang of these 15 and 30 minutes recipes, so if you are in a family that's always on the go, this just might be the book for you. It's way better than KFC or Mickey D's any day of the week.

As busy schedules cut into the food preparation time of families with active teenagers, takeout pizzas and Pop-Tart breakfasts become the norm. But Pop-Tarts fall pretty short in the nutrition category. Fresh fruit smoothies, yogurt parfaits, homemade granola, and breakfast sandwiches all provide a better start to the day, but how to fit more nutritious choices into hectic daily routines? Author Kathleen Cannata Hanna responds to the challenge of keeping teenagers healthy, fit, and full with 300 economical recipes that are both easy to make and fun to eat. She offers 15-minute dinners and satisfying pastas for the busiest evenings and 30-minute dinners and family suppers for slightly more relaxed weeknights and weekends. Hanna knows that feeding teenagers involves more than serving dinnertime meals. There are grab-and-go breakfasts to be eaten on the bus, brown-bag lunches, after-school snacks, soccer game pick-me-ups, and after-dinner treats for the kids and any friends that might be in the house too. The appealing recipes in The Good-to-Go Cookbook steer teens away from junk food and toward good-for-you alternatives. Quick Quesadillas, Easy Pizza Squares, Stuffed Chicken Crescents, and Ham Pockets satisfy between-meal hunger pangs. There are soups, sandwiches, and hearty salads for lunch and Baked Pasta with Peas and Cheese, BLT Pie, Tortilla Casserole, and Barbecued Turkey Burgers for simple suppers. When their friends are sleeping over, treat your teens to Sweet Treat Cookie Sandwiches or a Peanut Butter Pie. With The Good-to-Go Cookbook in the kitchen it's possible to feed the entire family quickly and well and still arrive at every track meet and ballet recital on time.

I've owned this book for over five years, and it is best cookbook I own. Recipes are well-tested, don't cost very much to make, use readily available ingredients, and many are simple enough to make for weeknight suppers. I recommend the chicken gumbo, the Carter Hill barbeque ribs, the eggplant casserole, the yam pork chop skillet, the Jamaican bannana cake, and the honey crunch pecan pie. I recommend this cookbook as a gift for college students because the recipes are easy and delicious.

Gourmet Meals in Minutes Review

Gourmet Meals in Minutes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love cookbooks. I have an extensive collection. I taught myself how to cook using cookbooks so I believe a good cookbook is one that inspires and should be understandable and reasonably easy to use; with that in mind I love this cookbook.
A big reason I love this book is because it does not try to trick you into believing that a great meal will just magically appear in 30 minutes. This book educates you on how to organize your kitchen so you will be able to produce gourmet meals with minimal cooking time. This includes practical suggestions on how to stock your kitchen pantry, refrigerator and freezer. Detailed time-saving techniques on how to prepare herbs, spices and other ingredients ahead of time so that their flavor is preserved and you have minimal prep-time when cooking. There is also advice on equipment and a lot of time is spent on techniques; each individual technique or set of techniques are explained step-by-step and illustrated when necessary.
I find that knowing my skill level helps me to determine if a cookbook is written for me; so far my stages of development have been total disaster, occasional disaster or novice, beginner, experienced beginner, advanced beginner/almost intermediate, and now I consider myself an intermediate cook. I am not a gourmet or professional by any means. I would not recommend this cookbook for a novice or beginner but for an experienced beginner through intermediate cook who wants to expand his or her repertoire and wants suggestions on technique, food preparation and stocking up their kitchen. I imagine this would be too simple for someone who is really advanced. If you fit in the categories I described above then this is a great option.
For the reviewer who described dishes she prepared as bland I have not had that experience. Although I follow the recipes from cookbooks as closely as possible I have found that it is always important to taste a dish when I am cooking and making changes if needed.

Cook Right 4 Your Type: The Practical Kitchen Companion to Eat Right 4 Your Type Review

Cook Right 4 Your Type: The Practical Kitchen Companion to Eat Right 4 Your Type
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I dug out my copy of Peter D'Adamo's ER4YT after being told to embrace the diet by my health care practitioner. I admit to being skeptical at first, the idea of blood type having anything to do with what you ate, how you felt and what kind of personality you had seemed a bit far-fetched. I also wondered how I would adapt to the largely unavailable whole grains and Omega-3 rich fish that I was supposed to be eating. Unfortunately, I live in an area where whole foods are considered extravagently obsessive and seafood means shrimp and crawfish, both no-nos for me on this dieting plan. My shopping is now limited to a once a week foray into the city to the only Whole Food Market in the entire metro area! Nonetheless, I find the on-going results positive. I am eating lots of fruit, fish, the occasional chicken and turkey enhanced by lots of soy products. I have even begun juicing again, taking my juicer down from the supply closet where it was placed when I was in my low-carb phase. I have discovered Ezekial bread which makes a fantastic toast which I admit to pathetically dreaming about while I exercise prior to eating.
I purchased this book to supplement my rather scant knowledge of vegetarian and whole food cuisine and have found it more than adequate. Each food group is represented by recipes that are specifically labeled as A, B, O or AB friendly. In addition, there are specific A,B,O or AB ingredients added or removed in certain recipes to make them extra friendly to your type--a nice lagnaippe! I have subtracted a star only because it does not have as many fish recipes as I would like!
Best of all,I find that I have not tested any of the snack or dessert recipes. The reason for this is simple: I HAVE NOT HAD ANY DESIRE FOR SUGAR and absolutely no desire to eat in between meals. Since my body is happily receiving what it needs, it isn't bothering me with the constant craving I usually experience when using a different dieting plan. On the digestive end, I have not had any bloating or stomach aches, and I have been able to stop taking a popular and expensive fiber therapy!
Keep in mind that if you are a mainstream eater---meals out of a box, or junk food junkie, you are going to have a difficult adjustment to make when trying or just reading this diet through the first time. I would recommend eliminating and adding foods little by little--in fact it may take years---until you are actually adhereing to all the diet advice given in the ER4YT books. I say this from my own experience which tends to get tired and burn out when the change is too great. Give it a shot--it may take a while to see results, but I think your body's acceptance and performance will tell the real story.
