I love cookbooks. I have a ridiculously big collection and curling up with a cookbook and a cup of tea is my idea of a lovely evening. The recipes have to grab me, of course -- and Table for Two has a variety of interesting recipes for different tastes, whether you are feeling adventurous (Malaysian Quinoa, featuring textured vegetable protein -- which I love, I hasten to add) or wanting comfort food (Basic Pot Roast or The Perfect Hamburger). But what makes a cookbook special to me is...something else, something more, something I can't always describe but that I know when I see. And this cookbook has it. The introductions, the asides, the explanations, all combine to make me feel like I am sitting in a friend's kitchen, watching a master cook, sharing a glass of wine, talking about food and recipes. Very nice.
Most of my cooking is for two; I have a college-aged son who apparently lives here (I can tell by the laundry pile), but is rarely around for meals. My tendency is to cook WAY too much, so this cookbook is a gentle reminder that there are actually only two people at the table; cooking for eight is a bit drastic.

(More customer reviews)This is one of my favorite cookbooks, both for the recipes and the gorgeous photos. The black bean, chicken and asparagus enchiladas and the french toast are perfect do-ahead ahead dishes for when you want to spend time with your sweetie instead of in the kitchen; I've made both ahead of time and popped them in the oven at the last minute, with great success (and yes, the foods do work...at least in my experience!). The photos are very sexy, but very tasteful. I especially liked the stories from couples who tested the recipes. This would make a great bridal shower gift.

I've cooked more than 25 dishes now and they have all been a success with my family and friends. People now think I'm some kind of gourmet chef thanks to this book, and the recipes are all simple, some with only 3 ingredients. Some of my best successes have been Warm Bean Salsa, Carmelized Red Onion Dip, Sticky Wings, Chicken Bites In Thai Peanut Sauce, Tropical Pepper Pot, Thai Beef Curry, Hot & Sour Pork, Chicken Tarragon and Pasta Primavera, to name just a few. This is just a perfect cook book, and is on top of that, it's so much fun to read Rebecca's stories and background info.
