Cooking Without Milk: Milk-Free and Lactose-Free Recipes Review

Cooking Without Milk: Milk-Free and Lactose-Free Recipes

I do not cook milk free at my home, but have relatives that cannot tolerate milk (of any kind) in their diet. This book has common sense information and ideas that are extremely helpful for creating meals without milk (even a Thanksgiving dinner). The format of the book is easy to use and sprinkled with ideas and tips. A good basic cookbook for anyone as the recipes can be adapted for use with milk also.

Cooking Without Milk is a straightforward, commonsense cookbook for the 50 million people in America who have milk or lactose intolerances or allergies. Unlike most of the current milk-free cookbooks that are free of lactose but not necessarily of milk, Cooking Without Milk is completely milk-free, with more than 550 recipes and variations of the foods people eat regularly with ingredients found in most grocery stores today. Many current milk-free cookbooks assume that lactose is the only problem ingredient in milk, require ingredients that are hard to find, and presume that cooks are mainly interested in making gourmet, time-consuming dishes. Cooking Without Milk, however, assumes that most people who cook milk-free don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Cooking is not their only pastime. Cooking Without Milk includes a wide range of recipes- main dishes, vegetables, soups, sandwiches, egg dishes, breads, deserts, beverages, and sauces, gravies, and glazes. Also included are guides to the role of milk and milk products in diet, high-lactose foods to avoid, a guide to calcium and calcium-rich foods, and other useful information for those who cannot consume milk. The author also suggests ways in which to determine one’s level of milk intolerance, how to live comfortably while avoiding milk, eating in restaurants, accepting invitations that involve meals, milk products in medications, knowing how to find hidden milk in the ingredients of everyday foods, what to be careful about when buying from an in-store deli, and a list of Web sites for those who want to research milk intolerance for themselves.

Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Kid Pleasing Recipes & Tips Review

My 3-year-old daughter is severely allergic to eggs, milk, and nuts, so this cookbook was right up our alley. Now that I have been using it for a while, I can honestly say that it has been an absolute lifesaver for us. My husband says the author must have some sort of "voodoo magic" to make so many things taste so good. We also cannot believe how she has have managed to make things like scalloped potatoes dairy-free and still have them taste JUST LIKE regular scalloped potatoes. I recently used the cream of mushroom soup recipe in the cookbook to make a green bean casserole that tastes just like the real thing. We love the recipes in the book so much that I have been freezing a lot of the meals because we're expecting a new baby in March and I'm trying to stock up on dinners for right after the birth. If your child has allergies to milk, egg, and/or nuts, you HAVE to have this cookbook.

Allergy-Free Desserts: Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Egg-free,Soy-free and Nut-free Delights Review

Allergy-Free Desserts: Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Egg-free,Soy-free and Nut-free Delights

My Book just arrived, and I was SO tired of seeing my friends devour sugar over the holidays...I couldn't wait to try something that would not trigger all of my allergies...yet be delicious.
I'd tried some of the author's allergen free cookies, found them far superior to similar products on the market...so why not try to learn to make such desserts myself?
Too many dinner parties of making a scrumptious dessert, only to watch in envy as it was devoured by friends...while I suffered in silence, unable to consume the dreaded egg, sugar, wheat trifecta of doom.
First of all, the book looks great...wonderful photos of mouth watering, allergen free cakes, cookies, and other treats. For my first experiment, I zeroed in on a long time favorite...vanilla cake. Directions were clear, recipe simple to follow...and it wasn't long before I stared at my reward for a holiday of dairy abstinence. I'm embarrassed to say that I devoured most of the cake before I could share it with my egg and wheat eating brethren. Unlike many of these 'healthy' desserts, it was delicious...moist, and a rich and creamy frosting. None of that disappointing aftertaste. (like you get with carob...I hate carob. I loathe carob)
I'm really happy with the book, and what I've sampled so far. Looking forward to dinner parties at which I don't have to sip green tea, clutching the saucer in resentment as I watch others down their sweet treats. The book is really wonderful, and I highly recommend it for its layout, photos, and most of all...delicious, easy to follow, recipes.

What Else is to Eat? The Dairy-, Egg-, and Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook Review

What Else is to Eat The Dairy-, Egg-, and Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already own a well-worn copy of Linda Coss's first cookbook "What's to Eat?", so I eagerly anticipated her newest selection of recipes. I wasn't disappointed. Many people are amazed that I cook and bake such GOOD food without dairy, eggs or nuts. I credit Linda for creating many of our favorites.
Here's a scrumptious sample of what we've been eating this week from "What Else is to Eat?":
Iced Honey Cookies (page 126)- we took these to a friend's house for dinner. They were a huge hit...easy to make and yummy to eat!
Spaghetti and Meatball Soup (page 26)- "This is really good, Mom!" was all I needed to hear.
Slow Cooker Beef With Rosemary and Potatoes (page 37)- Crockpots make life a bit easier, don't they? In just a few minutes I had everything in the slow cooker and voila', eight hours later, a delicious meal. Next time I'll chop the rosemary finely as my children picked off the "green pieces".
Linda's Signature Grilled Chicken (page 49)- Just four ingredients in a zip-top bag, with some chicken. I didn't grill, though, as our high temperature was 38 degrees that day, but it worked fine in the oven.
Disappearing Chocolate Oatmeal Delights (page 124)- these really did disappear in our house!
Coss's first recipe book ("What's to Eat?") is perfect for those who need basic food allergy recipes for items like pancakes, waffles, chocolate chip cookies and plain white cake. I find Linda's second book, "What Else is to Eat?", ideal for those of us who have the essentials, but are now hungry for the next level. Get them both and amaze your family and friends with delicious dishes.

This is one of the most beautiful cookbooks I have ever seen. Even the copyright page is adoreable. Beyond the beauty of the book is the deliciousness of the food. The "big fat greek scramble" takes tofu scrambles to a whole new level, and the "old fashioned rice pudding" reminds me of being a kid again. Oh, did I mention the pies? Just imagine, anything you would want to order from a greasy spoon, now buy this book and make the cruelty free version of it in your own kitchen.

Recipes for Dairy-Free Living Review

I bought a copy of this book after reading a newspaper article on the author that also featured some of the recipes included in the book. It's a great addition to my cookbook collection. Although I don't have a problem with dairy foods, I have some friends that can't tolerate them, so I bought this book to help me create a dairy-free dinner party. It was a huge success. I found the recipes easy to prepare and my friends raved about the dishes I served. The biggest "hit" on the menu was the Coconut-Lime Seafood Stew and I had to prove that the Flourless Chocolate Almond Cake contained no dairy ingredients. I found the book to be very informative and liked the fact that I could find all the ingredients at a local grocery store. My "dairy challenged" friends all want a copy of this book, so part of my Christmas shopping is already taken care of!! Thanks Denise
