Romantic Dinners for Two: Create a Romantic Experience,Easy step by step instructions on how to Wine,Dine and Seduce your lover.Perfect for Valentines (Book and DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Chef Robert and his wife Barb have been sharing romantic dinners for over 24 years. In their new book they show you how to create four course dinners. There are three dinners to choose from and there are extremely detailed instructions that anyone can follow. The shopping lists are especially helpful and they also include a section on tools and equipment so you have everything before you start cooking. The tear-out invitations are a nice touch and the romantic ideas throughout the book help to make your evening unforgettable.
The recipes from the third rendezvous include:
Shrimp with Julienne of Vegetables in a Zesty Cream Sauce
Salad Greens with Vegetable Tower
Pork Chops Stuffed with Spinach, Apple and Wild Rice Blend
Raspberry Flan
Now if this seems like a lot to cook all in one night then you will be happy to know that there is a "Seven Day Planner" for each evening. Most of the work occurs one or two days before you serve your dinner. In the first meal the planner says to make the Chocolate Mousse on Day 5 and then the rest of the dinner is made on Day 6. On Day 7 you are mostly concerned with cooking the main course (which is all prepared and in the refrigerator) and serving dishes you have already prepared (like the salad).
If you love to cook with your partner then you will want to skip to the third dinner where you can cook together. Each recipe has a full-color picture and detailed instructions. Overall this is an excellent way to seduce your partner with delicious gourmet foods. The "Conversation Igniters" also make sure you are talking about interesting subjects.

Everything Meals on a Budget Cookbook: High-flavor, low-cost meals your family will love (Everything Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Much good advice for making a grocery list, keeping track of pantry items, making a pricebook, using less meat to begin with and not throwing away food. It's often known we throw away, she says almost half, of what we have on our plates. If you don't believe that then look at your kids plate the next time they head to the trash can. Or watch them pour a glass of milk to later dump half of it down the sink. We do waste a lot as this author mentions.
And one of the biggest ways to save is to eat less. It's an epidemic in this country that we all eat too much, do we really need to eat a whole bag of chips? And it certainly would save money to eat less.
Some of the author's suggestions was to grow your own food, start a compost pile, can your own food, use food dehydrators, go vegetarian, etc. While all good suggestions I'm not sure most families have the time or capability of start their own garden or willing to go vegan but it certainly is worthy advice. Also, buying food in season was listed as a saving suggestion but there were no lists given as to when in season was "in". Check "producepete" for a list of in season fruits and vegetables. Also the website quoted in book was mistyped, it's "yourgrocer" (not yourgrocery) if you want to find it.
One of her budget saving suggestions was to have breakfast for dinner. Our family has always enjoyed that, the kids love to have a "breakfast dinner". I've seen some families go so far to call it an inside out dinner and they turn their clothes inside out for dinner to make it a silly event for the kids!
I've tried her suggestion of making my own milk with the milk powder and water and it never "tastes" as good as real milk. I don't know that I would follow that suggestion either but if you were budget conscious enough it's helpful. One I have heard people do use is to purchase a gallon of whole milk and then when it gets to half a gallon refill it with the powdered milk/water mixture and most family members will never tell the difference.
I did love the suggestion about buying meats on sale and making 2 or 3 meals and putting the extras in the freezer. Our family has practiced that for years using "Don't Panic Dinner's in the Freezer" or "Super Suppers".
Her meal price was $2.00 or less per serving and in many cases, less. The recipe for quick and easy salsa was labeled as .26 cents per serving with a serving being 1/4 cup. The recipe served 12 so if I did the math right the total is $3.12. I'm not sure where'd you buy 3 tomatoes, 1 green bell pepper, 1 japaleno pepper, red onion, garlic, lemon juice, and the other spices (assumed you had them in your pantry already) for $3.12?
Another recipe was spicy pita chips listed as .03 cents per serving. It was using 4-4" pita breads cut into 8 wedges making 64 chips. I guess a serving is 2 wedges? That total came to $1.92. I've never seen pita bread sold in a 4pk but a 10pk of pita bread is $3.99 plus adding roasted garlic vinaigrette, cotija cheese, and other spices I don't see how it's .03 cents per serving. What am I missing?
The Big Batch Guacamole recipe calls for making your own lima beans by soaking them overnight, simmering for 80 minutes and then pureeing. On top of all that you add onions, butter, spices, and 3 ripe avocados and the per serving price was .34 cents serving 8-10. That comes to $3.40. I think I'll just buy the Wholly Guacamole for $1.99 at Kroger and save 2 hours of cook time plus the overnight soak the night before. whew.
Also, the entree serving suggestions are per serving not per meal. So if you're trying to be truly budget conscious you'll have to add the cost of the entree and its sides to get a total cost figure. Her suggestion for the swiss steak which serves 6 was to add mashed potatoes and sauteed peas and radishes which only serve 4 (hummm..which 2 people go without?). In this example, the swiss steak is listed as $1.90 per serving of 6 so for $11.40 you'd have to buy 1.5 lbs of cube steak, 2 cans of diced tomatoes, carrots, can of mushrooms, plus have on hand onions, worcestershire, marjoram leaves, etc. I think that's possible. Now add the mashed potatoes of .22 cents a serving and the sauteed peas with radishes of .34 cents a serving to get a meal price of $2.46 per serving. The sauteed peas and radishes for $1.36 you'd have to purchase 2 radishes and a 16oz bag of peas. I know the birds eye frozen vegetables are $1 something and I don't know if you can get 2 radishes for .30 cents?? I'm not saying it's not possible but you'll have to know if it is to determine if the cost per serving is legit for you.
I did make the baked tuna mac and cheese and her .84 cents per serving suggestion was realistic. It calls for a packaged box of kraft macaroni and cheese adding onions, tuna and other spices. For a total of $3.36 I was able to buy a packaged version of kraft mac n cheese for $1.33 and a can of tuna is $1.50 (I have gotten it on sale for $1.00). I'm guessing the difference was to cover the onions, salsa, egg, parmesan cheese, etc. Another recipes calls for making the boxed mac n cheese and adding peas for a price of $1.89 for 3 servings. ouch.
Lots of good recipes, with menus in the back. Lots of good suggestions for your budget, but you could also find them at "frugalmom" ; "couponmom" ; "dollarstretchertips" or "livingonadime" for free.
Check it out at the library first to see if it will benefit your family. As a cookbook it's OK as a realistic budget helper...iffy.
If you want good advice on using leftovers or planning your menu around using leftovers, better option is Better Homes & Gardens Cook One Eat Twice for that.
There are a few in-colors pics on the inside of the front and back flaps. The lay-out is similar to the Dummies books layout in that there are shaded boxes with tips, hints and tricks in them. The "Everything" layout calls them "facts", "alerts" and "essentials". I like that design but I know it does bother others because it interfers with reading the recipe. There is no pantry list so you don't know up front which items the author considers you'd have already thus not included in the prices. No nutritional or calorie information so if you need that it's not listed.
HTH.

Cook's Country Best Lost Suppers Review

Cook's Country Best Lost Suppers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of my personal measures for the worth of a cookbook is the number of recipes that I want to try out. With this book, I want to try nearly every single one. This particular production is a real treasure. There are scads of fresh recipes, with ingredients that can usually be found in most supermarkets. I would say that most of the dishes would fall in the category of comfort food; and few would fall into the category of low-calorie. Most of the meals prepared from this volume would appeal to a broad spectrum of people. In these days of picky eaters I can imagine few people turning up their noses at these dishes. More likely than not, they will be asking your for the recipe. This is one of the most helpful cookbooks I've come across in a long time.

Cooking Know-How: Be a Better Cook with Hundreds of Easy Techniques, Step-by-Step Photos, and Ideas for Over 500 Great Meals Review

Cooking Know-How: Be a Better Cook with Hundreds of Easy Techniques, Step-by-Step Photos, and Ideas for Over 500 Great Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This comprehensive cooking tome focuses on techniques and then builds on the techniques with ideas for hundreds of meals. The authors take you step-by-step through 65 master recipes with 325 instructional photos.
For some, the step-by-step instructions might be too long--perhaps a bit too precise and a little overwhelming. But others may view this extensive offering as a means to answer all the questions one might ask a cooking teacher as they walk you through a recipe and technique. Call-out boxes give general information relating to the recipe. For example, in the "Filet Mignon and Other Red-Meat Medallions with a Pan Sauce" section, call-out boxes explain the three main temperature points for beef and other red meats; what a filet mignon is (even how to pronounce it); and the definitions of blue, rare, medium-rare, medium, medium-well, and well done.
There is one factor that makes //Cooking Know-How// stand head and shoulders above the crowded cookbook shelf: Following each recipe or technique is a chart with eight additional recipes for similar items. For instance, in the case of the Filet Mignon recipe, it is followed by eight different filet mignon and other red-meat medallion and sauce combinations. Variety is the spice of life, and in the charts one finds variations on the master recipe. Not only will you learn how to make enchiladas, but you will also learn recipes for eight different kinds of enchiladas. For anyone who loves to cook with variety, this is cooking heaven!
//Cooking Know-How// sets a new standard for cookbook organization, presentation, and depth of knowledge. What some skilled cooks may view this as too much information, the novice will appreciate the educational value of the thorough particulars. The charts which follow each master recipe are worth the weight of the book, and definitely worth the cost.

One Pot Meals Cookbook (Goose Berry Patch) Review

One Pot Meals Cookbook (Goose Berry Patch)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me say that I am a HUGE Gooseberry Patch fan. Currently I own six of their books: Slow Cooker Recipes, Best-Ever Casseroles, What's for Dinner?, Come on Over, One-Pot Meals and From Grandma's Kitchen. I just LOVE the books. The recipes are very easy, not too fancy, don't take long and always taste good. They are easy to read and the spiral binding keeps the books open flat. I think out of all of the books, I have only made one thing that I didn't care for. They are just great, great books to have around and I love the little tips on each page, the way that every book is broken up by meats and categories and just all of the other little helpful charts and equivalents that are in each book. In my opinion, they are just great additions to any cookbook collection and I love having them in my kitchen.
I have only made one thing out of this book so far (Yummy Peach Dessert) but it came out really well. I am looking forward to making other things as well. However, what I really like about this book is how they have it divided into cooking styles rather than meat...they have a section for pot/skillet/pressure cooking meals, oven meals, slow-cooker meals, microwave meals, grilled, dinner salads and a final dessert section. It's a really neat book and I am looking forward to working my way through it.
I would recommend it. I just can't give it five stars based on one recipe!

Jamie's Kitchen Review

Jamie's Kitchen

When I got the cookbook as a Christmas present I was a little skeptical. Okay maybe alot skeptical. The recipes looked a little too vague; not enough precise measurements; "add a glass of wine" (big glass? small glass? 'what's up with that?')Quite frankly, it made me nervous. Cookbooks aren't supposed to be like that.
But I gave the recipes a whirl and lo and behold, they turned out! The recipes were different yet familar. A nice twist on things (sorry, no pun intended). Jamie creates recipes with layers of flavor and texture; recipes with color and style. And what is more, they were relatively simple to make. I've received rave reviews from friends and family.
But the real surprise and joy was that Jamie's approximate portions and measurements allowed me to become more of my own chef, so to speak. I guess I always felt compelled to stick to the rigidity of a receipe. What I discovered is that I was more or less forced to I play with the amounts and I did not feel that I was somehow making a mistake when doing so. It was okay to toy with this ingredient or that. This gave me confidence to explore variations. In short, it made cooking even more fun.
This is how I think the great chefs really cook: they have a game plan but they have intuition, gut instinct. When you watch the great chefs on TV rarely do you see them haul out a measuring spoon or a cup. They go by eye, by experience and by gut. And I think this is what Jamie Oliver's book has done for the reader.
Buy it, experiment with it, have fun with it.

The show premiers this fall in the U.S. Jamie's Kitchen-the book-is laid out as a cooking course and will inspire readers of all levels. How to Cook Without a Book: Recipes and Techniques Every Cook Should Know by Heart Review

How to Cook Without a Book: Recipes and Techniques Every Cook Should Know by Heart
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already own a bookshelf of cookbooks, but Pam Anderson's is truly unlike any other out there. It explains, in a concise manner, the basis for the primary forms of cooking (from scratch!) that we all love, but never cook for lack of time: those hearty soups, salads, sauces to go with that ever-present chicken, and how to expand your menu way beyond chicken, and so much more. Unbelievable, she shows us that we *can* cook these on a weeknight (most within 30 minutes).
I love the concept behind this book because, while I enjoy cooking, I often don't have time for all of the recipes that are my family's favorites -- or at least I didn't think I did. This book teaches you that a soup, for example, is a few basic ingredients that you probably already have in your home, and that it can be prepared in 20 minutes! She shows you how this is true for a wide variety of meats, pasta dishes, appetizers, desserts, even stir-fry and pad thai dishes.
While there are also example recipes for every category of food in the book, after reading it, you will be inspired to create your own variations, even if you never thought you could. In addition, there are tips on how to make most of this food sophisticated enough for a dinner party, including example menus.
With the help of Pam Anderson's book, I now have the joy and the option of creating my own recipes, instead of constantly pulling a book from the shelf to find the answer to "What's for dinner?"
It's easy to read, thoroughly enjoyable and best of all, the ideas presented will help end the feeling that cooking the nightly dinner is such a chore!

I stumbled accross this cookbook at Borders this weekend and upon flipping through it decided I needed to have it. I already had the William Sonoma Dessert book, but this has SO MANY more recipes. And the beautiful thing about it is that I want to make most of them!!! I can't tell you how many cookbooks I have that waste space on my shelf for a recipe or 2. I've already made 3 recipes out of this in 3 days. I've never been disappointed in any of their recipes. I love that many of the ingredients are listed in both volume (cups) and weight (oz) measurements and there is a ton of reference material included as well. Definately worth the investment for a home baker and a beautiful book with great pictures too!
