Best-Ever Casseroles Cookbook (Gooseberry Patch) Review

Best-Ever Casseroles Cookbook (Gooseberry Patch)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me say that I am a HUGE Gooseberry Patch fan. Currently I own six of their books: Slow Cooker Recipes, Best-Ever Casseroles, What's for Dinner?, Come on Over, One-Pot Meals and From Grandma's Kitchen. I just LOVE the books. The recipes are very easy, not too fancy, don't take long and always taste good. They are easy to read and the spiral binding keeps the books open flat. I think out of all of the books, I have only made one thing that I didn't care for. They are just great, great books to have around and I love the little tips on each page, the way that every book is broken up by meats and categories and just all of the other little helpful charts and equivalents that are in each book. In my opinion, they are just great additions to any cookbook collection and I love having them in my kitchen.
I have probably used this one more than any other GP book that I have. I have made Finnish Pancakes, Baked Apple Pancake, Amish Baked Oatmeal, Nutty French Toast Bake, Broccoli-Chicken Lasagna, Dilly Tuna Casserole, and Mom's Broccoli Casserole, and all were fantastic. The recipes are laid out well, easy to prepare and the ingredients are basic and not hard to find. Most of the stuff you probably already have in your refrigerator or pantry. The breakfast dishes I have made are fantastic and a lot of them can be made the night before so you can pop them in the oven when you wake up, which is awesome for a lazy weekend. And everything reheats perfectly which makes for great leftovers to take to work during the week.
Now, are they gourmet? No. There are a PLETHORA of other casserole books out there that are if you are looking for something that will take you two hours to prepare before you even get it in the oven (like the crab and artichoke casserole I made last night from another book). But if you are looking for a nice, basic casserole book without too many processed soups and that won't take you too much time to prepare, this is a very good one.
Way to go, Gooseberry Patch!

5 Ingredients or Less Fresh Recipes for Every Season Plus Clever Tips for Celebrating Every Day (Gooseberry Patch) Review

5 Ingredients or Less Fresh Recipes for Every Season Plus Clever Tips for Celebrating Every Day (Gooseberry Patch)

Thus far, everything in this cookbook is GOOD and HANDY (I have only had it a week or so, and have already used it three times, to the neglect of my other Gooseberry Patch cookbooks!) It's lots of fun just to read the recipes, which are both mouth-watering and almost TOO easy. Clear, simple instructions will please even the most novice cooks. I also loved how this book was organized by season: lighter, fresher dishes in the summer section; cozier, comfort-food dishes in the fall and winter.
The recipes are also extremely inexpensive to make, and in many cases, by using the staples you probably already have. In other words, this book is a no-lose situation! I'd choose it as a gift for any newlywed, college student, or family-on-the-go.
There are even really cute ideas for dressing up and changing flea-market finds, and other simple crafts and decorating ideas that even a fumble-fingers such as myself can handily accomplish.
Only one very minor complaint...it seemed that some seasonings were left out of a few the recipes, simply to keep them under 5 ingredients. But the basics here are so good I wouldn't have minded if they called for 10 ingredients.
UPDATE: Today I made the recipe for BIG Chocolate Cookies on Page 57. Something went wrong, or there was poor editing in temperature or ingredients, or SOMETHING. I ended up with a huge, gloppy, inedible mess. I've been baking since age 9 and have never had such a failure as this particular recipe. Gah!!

I have only made one thing out of this book so far (Yummy Peach Dessert) but it came out really well. I am looking forward to making other things as well. However, what I really like about this book is how they have it divided into cooking styles rather than meat...they have a section for pot/skillet/pressure cooking meals, oven meals, slow-cooker meals, microwave meals, grilled, dinner salads and a final dessert section. It's a really neat book and I am looking forward to working my way through it.
I would recommend it. I just can't give it five stars based on one recipe!

What's For Dinner? Review

What's For Dinner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have bought other menu style cookbook but this one is the only one I can't seem to break away from. Why do I want to break away from it? Too many of the recipes use canned soup and the overall diet is high in saturated fat. Why do I love it? Because it gets a number of courses on the table with so little effort, it looks impressive and although I think many of the side dishes are only so-so, my (grown) son has loved almost every meal I've made from this book. I also save money using this cookbook. The recipes call for inexpensive, easy to find and familiar ingredients. Also much thought has been given towards incorporating left-overs into the menus, from roast beef to that bag of potatoes. There is even an ingredient index in the back of the book. I have other cookbooks that are advertised as being "budget" but the author of this cookbook seems to understand that waste is a bigger budget buster than buying chicken breasts, for example, instead of chicken thighs.
I did this review quite some time ago. I now have a couple of recommendations for people who like easy meal planning with recipes and shopping lists. I have no connection with either of these web sites but I've appreciated it when others have made recommendations to me. That's my only motivation. First, if you like economical cooking that is ridiculously easy to make, fairly healthy but uses canned soups and packaged foods a lot in the menus, you might like e-mealz. (Be sure to put in the dash. You want e-mealz, not emealz.) They have several different meal plans to choose from and it costs $15 for 3 months. They even have plans for certain stores like Walmart where they tell you what brands to buy in order to get the best price. Now, if you want to cook with more fresh foods and don't mind actually doing a little fairly easy cooking, there is savingdinner. It's around the same price or maybe a little less. I don't remember exactly. It's quite healthy and I love it. They also have several meal plans and a grocery list. However, when you sign up for this one, you get ALL of their meal plans, including breakfast and lunch ideas. The menus are economical but not as cheap as e-mealz. I still use e-mealz when I'm really low on money or really lazy - which of more often than I'd like to admit.

Dinners on a Dime Review

Dinners on a Dime
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was seriously impressed with the recipes in this cookbook. The meals are indeed cheap and contain regular, everyday ingredients most of us have in our cupboards already. I love how the catagories were separated so that if you wanted a slow-cooker meal you could go right to that section. I also love the section entitled "Budget-friendly Gatherings"- meals for many without breaking open the piggy bank. There's a section entitled "Penny-pinching Pantry Staples" that includes recipes for making your own homemade sauces, spice mixes, breads, jams and more. Many of the recipes have 5 to 8 ingredients at the most. I have made quite a few recipes from the book including the Curly Noodles Supper, Hamburger Cream Gravy and Creamy Macaroni & Beef. Each recipe I have made has cost under $5 and fed my family of 5 plus leftovers and has been two thumbs up, yummy-delicious. For those that like to cook on the cheap without skimping on the flavor, this is definitely a cookbook that should be on your kitchen shelf.
