Romantic Dinners for Two: Create a Romantic Experience,Easy step by step instructions on how to Wine,Dine and Seduce your lover.Perfect for Valentines (Book and DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Chef Robert and his wife Barb have been sharing romantic dinners for over 24 years. In their new book they show you how to create four course dinners. There are three dinners to choose from and there are extremely detailed instructions that anyone can follow. The shopping lists are especially helpful and they also include a section on tools and equipment so you have everything before you start cooking. The tear-out invitations are a nice touch and the romantic ideas throughout the book help to make your evening unforgettable.
The recipes from the third rendezvous include:
Shrimp with Julienne of Vegetables in a Zesty Cream Sauce
Salad Greens with Vegetable Tower
Pork Chops Stuffed with Spinach, Apple and Wild Rice Blend
Raspberry Flan
Now if this seems like a lot to cook all in one night then you will be happy to know that there is a "Seven Day Planner" for each evening. Most of the work occurs one or two days before you serve your dinner. In the first meal the planner says to make the Chocolate Mousse on Day 5 and then the rest of the dinner is made on Day 6. On Day 7 you are mostly concerned with cooking the main course (which is all prepared and in the refrigerator) and serving dishes you have already prepared (like the salad).
If you love to cook with your partner then you will want to skip to the third dinner where you can cook together. Each recipe has a full-color picture and detailed instructions. Overall this is an excellent way to seduce your partner with delicious gourmet foods. The "Conversation Igniters" also make sure you are talking about interesting subjects.

This book is very disappointing. My main complaint is that many of the recipes call for ingredients such as frozen vegetables, canned soup, mayonnaise, and one which actually calls for an entire bottle of Catalina salad dressing. This really is not my style of cooking. Another reviewer commented that a lot of recipes need something done throughout the cooking process or are partially cooked on the stove before being put into the Crockpot. This was a big turn off for me too. I suggest trying a different book.

The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook Review

The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Though I've seen complaints that these aren't all Martha's "original" recipes, I think those are from people who are missing the point. This is simply a compilation of the most popular recipes--more than 1,500 of them, this is a BIG book--which have appeared in Martha Stewart Living magazine to date. Stewart makes no secret of the fact that many of these recipes come from chef's, friends and others who have either appeared on her show or contributed to her magazine.
I've looked at other Martha Stewart cookbooks, including the classic "Entertaining," and think that, for the money, this is the best Martha cookbook on the market. It offers a wide variety and hits on all the favorites from both her show and magazine.
While I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as the only cookbook to have in your kitchen, it does have a great mix of old-fashioned classics--those contributed by Martha's mom are my favorite (I'm addicted to her meatloaf)--and meals which can "wow" company, both with taste and presentation.
Alongside the classics--"The Joy of Cooking" and/or "The New Joy of Cooking," the "Betty Crocker Cookbook," the "Fannie Farmer Cookbook" and/or a Cook's Illustrated title (either "The Best Recipe" or the "Cook's Bible")--the voluminous and comprehensive "Martha Stewart Living Cookbook" will round out a perfectly balanced recipe collection for anyone who enjoys cooking, or just wants to be able to put together a smart looking meal now and again.

Dinner Tonight: Deliciously Simple Weekday Meals You Can Get to the Table in No Time Review

Dinner Tonight: Deliciously Simple Weekday Meals You Can Get to the Table in No Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Finally, a practical cookbook for putting together tasty, wholesome dinners when you are nearly out of energy. Bye-bye carry-out.
Marge Perry was featured in a recent Home Magazine article. I tried a couple of her recipes and ordered the book. I was not disappointed. The dinners are easy to make but don't taste like the "quick & easy" recipes they are. I've made several recipes from the book and my favorite (so far) is chicken with oranges and feta cheese. My husband is wild for the macaroni and cheese (made with a lot of tomatoes.)
I particularly like the way Ms. Perry keeps the number of pots & pans to a minimum. I've cooked my spinach in the pasta water for years but Ms. Perry has even more suggestions for quickly cooking the veggies along with another part of the dinner.
Novice and experienced cooks will appreciate the clear, simple instructions. This is obviously a home cook's book, not a book written by a professional chef with a professional support staff. As much as I enjoy the books written by the celebrity chefs, this is a book I can really use, night after night.

365 Quick, Easy & Inexpensive Dinner Menus Review

365 Quick, Easy and Inexpensive Dinner Menus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After all the great reviews, I was a little disappointed in this book for a couple of reasons: 1) the number of recipes that rely on canned "cream of" soups as a major ingredient, 2)the number of recipes that rely on Cheez Whiz as a major ingredient and 3)a good number of the recipes require a bit more time than I expected (for example, the Chicken Fried Steak takes 2 hours to bake). That said, I still think this is a great resource if (like me) you are just plain out of ideas for varying your dinner menus. I have noted several recipes I plan to try and think I will be referring to this book often.

Pantry Cooking: Quick and Easy Food Storage Recipes Review

Pantry Cooking: Quick and Easy Food Storage Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As I write this review, I have a pot of 15 bean soup on the stove, recipe courtesy of this book. The soup smells and tastes delicious because I am the kind of cook who does taste as I go along.
I bought this book in the wake of news reports indicating that food prices had soared in the last year. Because I can remember paying 19 cents a pound for chicken at one point, many years ago, the price of eggs, peanut butter and such basics as sugar and flour has me reeling. Just driving to the grocery store, in winter (when walking or biking is difficult or impossible), costs gas money. As of this writing, gas price are predicted to soar and aren't exactly low.
This book offers a solution for those who feel pinched financially, a way to save money and even get by if there would be a power outage, major earthquake, blizzard or simply very tough times during a major recession.
The solution? Pantry cooking or making sure you have enough food on hand to get by without a trip to the grocery store. The author is very clever and has given readers this info:
1. A list of supplies to have on hand, enough to support one person for a year without a single trip to the grocery store. While you might not care for THAT ambitious a plan, you can adapt her method to only 2 weeks or up to 5 weeks. You don't have to commit to a year without going to the grocery store!
2. The money saving advantages of stocking up on food
3. An emphasis on whole grains and healthy foods.
4. A list of recipes, day by day, for 5 weeks, including breakfast, lunch and dinner.
5. Storage and pantry tips. No pantry? Think about the space under your bed or under rarely used dining room tables (with a tablecloth on top).
Recipes in this one will satisfy both vegetarians and those who like meat. The bean soup doesn't require an ounce of meat, although it does taste better with a ham bone thrown in (in my opinion). However, it is delicious just as it is. There is a nice global or cross-cultural diversity of recipes, from Anasazi stew to Arroz Con Pollo to Egg Foo Yung to Fettucini with Capers, Olives and Tomatoes. Try feeling deprived with that kind of versatility!
For those who wonder whether food is family friendly, I can vouch for that. The answer is yes.
However, you may want to substitute fresh ingredients for dried ones when you can and use the dried alternative only in a true emergency. We've experimented with both versions of recipes so I know that each is perfectly fine. I do add my own seasonings and variations to each recipe (most of the time) but we always try the recipe as the author originally intended it so I can also note that the recipes are tasty and you can adapt them beyond the original, as desired.
Other recipes include basics such as beef stew but also more gourmet fare like pasta with artichokes, smoked salmon cakes. There are also desserts like rice pudding, cherry cobbler, brownies and chocolate chip pudding.
Other features I like:
The Snack Pack: a backpack that is always filled with healthy and ready to eat snacks and drinks which can be tossed in the car and taken along. This is an idea I wish I'd used when my children were young. It would have prevented stops at fast food restaurants and early trips home from the park.
The 72 Hour Survival Kit- the basics for staying alive for 3 days
A list of suppliers and resources at the end of the book.

Barefoot Contessa Parties Ideas and Recipes for Easy Parties That Are Really Fun Review

Barefoot Contessa Parties Ideas and Recipes for Easy Parties That Are Really Fun
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ina Garten has brought sanity and great food to entertaining at home.
The great thing about this book is the style everything is served and prepared in, though it uses a bit more fat than I would cook with for everyday meals. She is a friend of Martha Stewart but her recipes are very un-Martha like in preparation. Ina does not have a staff of hundreds to make everything just perfect for that dinner party for the magazine. This lady runs a business on her culinary skill - she does what works with a minimum amount of fuss - it tastes wonderful AND looks great.
I have received rave reviews for the Sour Cream Coffee Cake, the Happy Birthday! meal, and the Chocolate Ganache Cake. The Chocolate Cake went over big. It was so easy to make, it was an afterthought while putting together a meal for six at the very last minute.
You will not be disappointed with this cookbook.

I just love this little book. I have many, many cookbooks to choose from and I've gone back to this one for several dishes already in the last two months since I've purchased. Although, I have not yet made a full menu as it recommends, taking pieces here and there has been just as wonderful. The dishes are gourmet in their presentation and ingredients, but not complicated to prepare. Perfect when cooking just for two on a nice quiet weekend.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Quick and Easy Low-Carb Meals Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Quick and Easy Low-Carb Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Along comes another LC cookbook, sayeth the powers at Amazon, and lo I buy and test; for such is the compulsion of the dieting reviewer.
Not normally someone to pick up the books with titles that suggest I may have lower-than-average intelligence (guilty conscience perhaps?), nevertheless I couldn't resist the allure of "quick and easy". Tod Dimmick has written a cookbook that promises several things in the introduction:
*Use high-quality, low-carb ingredients
*Keep it simple
*Call for accessible ingredients
*Avoid processed foods
*Take advantage of quick cooking methods
*Keep an eye on saturated fat
*Control expense
*Add in fun and flavor
My job, as I see it, is to test how well these promises are carried out by actually performing the recipes in my average home kitchen. This time I tried four appetizers, three breakfasts (aside from the ever-present omelet recipes that *every* LCCB has, and which I am tiring of rapidly; besides, it's hard to mess up a basic egg/meat/veggie recipe if your cooking method is good), two seafood main courses, a meat loaf, a kid-friendly chicken dinner, a salad and three dessert selections. Additionally, there were a few dozen recipes that were so similar to recipes from other LCCBs that I didn't even need to try them yet again to know exactly how they would turn out - simple and classic dishes that are universally LC, like grilled steak with seasonings, wine, and butter or roasted veggie side dishes. In all, I feel confidently familiar with at least half of the recipes in TCIGTQ&ELCM.
My verdict: this book lived up to its promises, mostly. There were few enough ingredients, easy to understand instructions, and everything was fresh, unprocessed, inexpensive and accessible at my supermarket. Vegetables were emphasized in most main dish recipes, putting an end to the myth that LC means lacking nutrition and variety. There was a lot of leeway in choosing cuts of meat based on personal preference and budget. Nearly everything had a built-in guarantee of good flavor because that is what you get when you use a very few fresh, unprocessed ingredients in simple recipes that call for quick cooking methods. Looked at that way, it's hard for this cookbook to fail.
As for being low carb, my impression is that about half of the overall recipes were truly a traditional, Atkins-style low carb, the other half is what might be called "good carb", of the kind that you might find on a South Beach diet, for instance. I suppose that somebody on a "good carb" type diet would have no trouble with the low carb dishes, but a traditional Atkins dieter would have to stay away from the "good carb" recipes for sure. Some high-carb fruits were called for frequently in the breakfast and dessert sections: also, unprocessed bran was used as a substitute for many starchy things including bread crumbs, and while that's okay for some LC diets, it's troublesome for Atkins and Paleo diets. That does limit a strict low-carber severely, and it was a little disappointing to me, given the title that promised *low* carb. I just wish that the Good Carb and Low Carb recipes were marked as such.
I can sincerely rave that I loved what I tried (exceptions: anything that tried to imitate bakery items that are normally made with wheat flour. The pancake and cookie recipes blew chunks IMHO. Sorry Mr. Dimmick, but soy flour and other LC bake mixes just don't taste right). Even where it wasn't terribly original, this cookbook can't be faulted for taking advantage of the tried-and-true. Sometimes all I needed was a reminder that yes, stuffed peppers can be translated low carb, and that Oh yeah, classic salsa and hot artichoke dips are ready-made as low carb. What can I say, there is a fine line between Id__t and genius.
-Andrea, aka Merribelle

Small Bites Review

Small Bites
Average Reviews:

I've been daunted by throwing parties for years, always embaressed to be whirling like a dirvish in my kitchen an hour after my intended start time, so caught up in food-making that I miss out on my own soiree.
BUT THIS BOOK ROCKS--
to me, the most invaluble part is the suggested menus for themed culinary soirees. The author breaks down what can be prepared days, hours, minutes in advance which meant that, despite having a full work week and only an hour to prepare, I was able to throw together an impressive spread. while the gorgeous photographs make the appetizers look daunting, everything I prepared was simple enough, especially since I was doing it over the course of a handful of days and had time to clean up. And it was so good!
my complaints: the authors don't always explain what's what so well. so, while I was intrigued by the carrot escuchebe suggested as part of a fiesta themed menu, I had no idea what it was to be served with. also, some of the ingredients are difficult to obtain, although reasonable substitutions are suggested.
it's a nice book to use as a launch pad--you can guess where your own cheats can be (a good store-bought salsa or guacamole, for instance). and it sure makes a pretty coffee table book.
I highly recommend this for anyone who aspires to take entertaining to another level, but isn't quite ready to take on Martha Stewart.

Slow Cooker Cooking Review

Slow Cooker Cooking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Background (why you might care what I think): I love/live to cook without deadlines and time limits, but I am also extremely busy, so I finally bought a slow cooker to save time, sure, but also to time-shift my prep time, so that my family could eat Boeuf Bourguignon on Wednesdays, at 7pm, without also having to go visit their daddy in the psych ward at 8pm.
All of the slow cooker books I found at first called for (always): frozen vegetables; (often) cans of soup; (far too often) "liquid smoke." Sure, I tried them, and some were certainly teenager-pleasing, and weirdly interesting in their own way, but I would prefer a little less convenience in exchange for more authentic recipes.
So, this book delivers exactly that. As I write, my family is collapsed in a heap after GORGING on Ms. Brody's bourguignon. It took me a full hour to prep, but next time I'll save 20 minutes and considerable mess by browning the meat before marinating (I'll also double the recipe!) Over time, I'll doubtless make other changes until I get the recipe exactly the way I want it, but that is true of any recipe in any cookbook. Too many duck recipes? This is a cookbook, not the Constitution! I've made two of the duck recipes so far, with no sighting of an actual duck anywhere, and I've been delighted with both.
So, this is a nice little book, full of welcome ideas. However, when one can get (say) 400+ pages of Daniel Boulud for about the same price, it becomes a rather expensive, slim volume. I have lived with it for a month now, and I am nonetheless quite happy with it. What follows are some of my further observations:
The "Pantry" section is excellent, probably the core of the book. The black bean and chickpea recipes effortlessly deliver fresh-cooked beans ready for use in anything. For example, the total working time to transform a pile of raw chickpeas into an catering-size vat of hummus is about 15 minutes.
The infused oil recipe is a bit hit-and-miss. However, the idea itself is great. The addition of an oil thermometer and a partially-closed lid quickly transforms the cooker into an accurate scientific apparatus, capable of very precise, effortless infusions. Try infusing olive oil with lemon zest next time you need your senses stimulated (then use the oil in a bread recipe, next time you need your whole house stimulated :-)
If your cooker is big enough (oval, preferably) The lamb stew with potato and feta crust can be economized and much improved by using a well-trimmed 1/2 leg. Let it cool when done, then shred the meat off the bone by hand.
The Chicken Merlot with Mushrooms is wonderful, with the mushrooms still crisp after cooking for 4 hours. Rather too much liquid, though (true of many of the recipes here).
The Morroccan Chicken with Prunes & Couscous is my favourite so far, but it would better served with plain couscous and a separately-cooked side dish, as the flavour is otherwise too intensely uniform.
Only one significant gripe (apart from the price): The layout designer sometimes sacrificed utility for artsiness, unnecessarily spreading some recipes across three pages, with little or no indication that there is more to come.

When someone says "slow cooker," do you think of pot roast or chili? Now you can think Slow Cooked Salmon, Caramelized Onion Soup, falling-off-the-bone Lamb You Can Eat with a Spoon, and Flourless Pear Anise Soufflé. If these dishes whet your appetite, it's time to take that slow cooker out of the closet, plug it in, and get ready for Slow Cooker Cooking.Lora Brody knows her appliances. She inspired a whole new generation of bread bakers with her best-selling bread machine books. Here she pushes the slow cooker to places no one ever expected it to go, inventing fruit bases for soufflés and ice creams, reducing milk and sugar to make Dulce de Leche, and infusing oils with herbs. In addition to creating innovative takes on one-pot meals such as classic New England Boiled Dinner, Venison Stew with Mushrooms, and Osso Buco with Gremolata, here you will find recipes for ingredients that are the basis for other dishes, such as Duxelles, Braised Chestnuts, and vegetable and chicken stocks. Vegetarians will enjoy recipes such as Ragoût of Leeks, Fennel, and Celery and Virtuous Lentil Soup, and dessert lovers will rejoice when they see recipes for Hazelnut Chocolate Fondue and Coconut Rice Pudding.Creative cooking in the slow cooker doesn't mean giving up any of the convenience associated with this popular appliance. You still add the ingredients to the pot and go about your day (or evening), letting the slow cooker do all the work. Thanks to the pot's sealed insert and consistently even heat, food cooks under ideal conditions to make it tender and bring out maximum flavor. Come home to a kitchen perfumed with an aroma that promises good things to eat and find a perfectly cooked dish to enjoy.

I'm far from unexperienced in the kitchen, but the majority of my specality was limited to either breakfast type foods or what I could mix together in a crock pot.
The recipies are laid out very easy to follow directions, usually with a story or anecdote to go with each.
What really has me turning to this book again and again is the part of cooking that I hate, the clean up. The majority of the recipies can be cooked up with a very minimum of clean up after the meal is done.
A definte buy for the guy who hates washing dishes, is tired of eating off paper plates, is sick of tv dinners and can't find the can opener.

The Seduction Cookbook: Culinary Creations for Lovers Review

The Seduction Cookbook: Culinary Creations for Lovers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Cooking and seduction are delicious arts that involve head, hand and heart. Great lovers are inspired by passion, as are great chefs." ~Diane Brown
"The Seduction Cookbook" is probably one of the most exciting cookbooks you will ever buy. Not only does it contain many secrets of seduction, the recipes are exotic and divinely delicious. Your lover will think you are a cooking god or goddess who has arrived to give them a tantalizing gourmet feast. They will worship you later in appreciation.
Diane Brown has been practicing the art of seduction cooking for years. Her recipes have also been featured in "Bon Appetit," "Gourmet," and "Sunset" magazine. Her introductions to all the chapters contain some of the sultriest sentence you will ever read and her recipes are all very easy to make.
What is Seduction Cooking? - This, you want to know! ;) Some great ideas that don't even involve cooking!
Write a Sexy Invitation to Dine - Romance, romance! I love the ideas especially writing "secret codes" only your lover could crack or delivering items to your lover that he/she has to wear to dinner.
Seductive Starters: Getting Warmed Up - Diane shows you how to create a mood for love and her idea about the tablecloth and rose petals could help you discover the pleasures of finger foods. There are recipes for Artichokes with Warm Vinaigrette, Chile Lime Shrimp, Lover's Purses and the delicious Endive, Orange and Fennel Salad.
The Main Event: Seduction Dinners - Imagine dining on Baked Cod with Shitake Mashed Potatoes and Shitake Sauce or Cornish Game Hens with Orange, Ginger and Soy Sauce. Baked Salmon with Raspberry Cabernet Sauce is one of the most interesting recipes I've tried in this cookbook. Shallots, raspberry preserves and Cabernet Sauvignon make a syrupy sauce to coat the salmon.
Seduction on the Side - Looking for zesty and provocative side dishes? Try the Broccoli in Orange Chile Oil that has a sauce you pour over steamed broccoli. The Green Basmati Rice is actually one of my favorite seduction secrets. I think it is the garlic. This recipe alone proved this book works.
Sweet Seduction: Desserts for Debauchery - If you love marscarpone cheese, the recipe for stuffed strawberries takes this creamy, dreamy cheese to new levels. Poached pears are drenched in a cardamom ginger sauce. Broiled Plums with Lemon Sorbet could not be easier and you have to try the honeydew recipe.
If you are looking for one sexy recipe for honeydew, it is in this cookbook. I made it twice in two days and plan to make it once a week. At first I was skeptical about the combination of rosemary and honeydew melon, but now I'm a believer. The syrupy sauce coating the melon is quite interesting and almost tingles on your tongue. I used vermouth but you can use a sweet white wine of your choice. Honeydew does soak up the syrup rather well, but I also love the syrup with other melons like cantaloupe. Imagine feeding your lover little slices or balls of melon dripping with an intoxicating syrup.
Late Night Seduction Snacks - Orange slices and Strawberries dipped in chocolate syrup or Toasted Cinnamon Raisin Bread with Cream Cheese are two of the ideas.
The Morning After: Breakfasts to Rekindle the Passion - Want to impress your lover with your "omelet" making skills? There are some delicious fillings too. Do Banana Pancakes with Caramelized Walnuts sound worth waking up for and how about serving breakfast with a seduction smoothie made from mangoes, strawberries and lemon yogurt. Diane even shows you how to make your own Chai Tea. There are also some "quickie" breakfast ideas like warm croissants with preserves.
Seduction Scenarios: Menus to Make the Mood - You will find Menus for: Valentine's Day, Romance of Italy, Indian Spice, Late Night Fireside Supper, Bewitching Bedroom Brunch and Decadent Dessert Orgy.
Seduction Staples - Diane shows you how to toast spices, purchase the freshest shellfish and roast peppers. Oh, and the all important... how to whip cream with vanilla and powdered sugar.
Grow an Erotic Herb Garden - Imagine your garden bursting with fresh herbs, especially rosemary, lavender and basil.
If you want to end up under the table, somewhere near the table or drifting towards the bedroom after dinner, this is your book. You might even want to eat dinner in bed or while reclining on velvet pillows in a room filled with candles.
This is one sexy cookbook! I'm in love with Diane's creative writing and sensual recipes.
