5 Ingredient Fix: Easy, Elegant, and Irresistible Recipes Review

5 Ingredient Fix: Easy, Elegant, and Irresistible Recipes

I just received this book a couple of days ago and I love it! The layout is very nice and across the top of the page of every recipe the five ingredients are listed, so that you can quickly flip through the cookbook and have an overview of the ingredients used. So far I have made:
Rosemary-Parmesan Shortbread - so delicately delicious and addictive, great with wine and I even had a few the next day with my coffee. My son kept finding his way back to the pantry to sneak some extras.
Asian Beef Roll-ups - very flavorful (but I confess I did not roll them up), the next day my husband put the leftovers in a hotdog bun and topped them with the braised red cabbage and loved it that way too. I do think I will grill the flank steak whole next time and slice it after it's cooked. Those thin slices cooked way too fast and came close to being more like beef jerky, but that has more to do with my skills than the recipe. I also think I'll will double the sauce (so good!) and try to use it in different dishes.
Braised Red Cabbage - this was good, but next time I will try to get my helping first instead of last, the crumbled bacon over the top definitely got people's attention! Not too mention the yummy smell of maple ("I smell syrup and bacon!" was heard a few times while I cooked this).
Can't wait to cook some more recipes today!

Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids and Busy Adults Review

Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids and Busy Adults

Being new to the gluten-free diet I have been very disappointed in the majority of the GF cookbooks. The ingredients are often a challenge to find, are expensive, and frankly just taste gross or have a funky texture. The more ingredients that are different from what we "used to eat" the more disappointing the outcome. Of all the cookbooks I've tried so far (8 of the "mainstream" ones) this one has the most familiar ingredients and "normal" foods. My 5 year old has enjoyed everything I have made from this book so far and has been excited to eat something GF that actually tastes like what he used to eat. The recipes are simple, fast, affordable, and best of all we actually enjoy food again! THANK YOU CONNIE SARROS!

Healing Foods: Cooking for Celiacs, Colitis, Crohn's and IBS Review

Healing Foods: Cooking for Celiacs, Colitis, Crohn's and IBS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just received this cookbook today and I am thrilled. I was looking for some inspiration in the kitchen. My family has been doing the SCD since June of 2006 (treating autoimmune disease in myself; ADHD and chronic diarrhea in my son) and we were getting bored with our current recipes. I really needed something to get me excited about cooking again. This book has done just that. The pictures alone are worth the price of the book! It is breathtaking. They make me want to start organizing, planning, and cooking in the kitchen again!!!
And this is quite a hefty book, there are so many recipes in here, I'm having trouble deciding what to try first! One thing I noticed right off the bat, is that there are plenty of recipes that don't depend on almond flour. Sure, there are plenty that do take benefit of this wonderful alternative flour, but not an overabundance of the book like some SCD cookbooks that I have. Also, there are a wide variety of recipes- scrumptious gourmet dinner party looking stuff right down to your basic everyday stuff. There is a nice balanced feel to the range of recipes overall. There are tons of condiment and sauce recipes as well. It looks to be a very versatile cookbook. I'll update this again once we've tried some of the recipes.
I've got some more book ordering to do as this cookbook will definitely find its way into many Yule presents this year for my friends and family.
As for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, SCD, itself (which this cookbook is aligned with):
Elaine Gottschall's book, Breaking The Vicious Cycle, which details the SCD, saved my life. I was lost in chronic pain, brain fog, insane exhaustion-- unable to enjoy life. SCD has given back the joys in my life. I've lost 80 pounds and am at a healthy weight. I have so much more energy to live, not just physical energy, but mental energy as well. I can keep track of what chores need to be done and don't feel overwhelmed or daunted anymore. I can discipline my children and actually be effective. I can follow conversations. I can move and walk and even dance pain free. I feel connected to the world around me instead of lost in fuzzy brain fog. I can enjoy my children, my husband, my friends, my family and my life once again.
My son has been pulled from the brink of Asperger's by this diet. His ADHD has also been slowly fading. Emerging is this sweet, calm, focused, articulate little boy. SCD also gave him the first solid stools of his entire life. His little body is rapidly healing on this diet.
SCD is a healing diet and this cookbook is definitely all about "Healing Foods." If you are looking for a cookbook that will help you reclaim your health, this one is a winner, along with Elaine's book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, which the author of Healing Foods also highly recommends.
UPDATE: We have tried some of the recipes now, and WOW! Yummy! We have tried the Lamb Koftas, Beef Lasagna, Yogurt Raita, Dijonaise, and Spinach Roulade. My husband, who has been reluctant to eat SCD wise, has been amazed at how great he feels eating this way with me and how yummy the food is! He thought eating healthier would be boring and unappealing. This cookbook has helped me to show him that isn't the case. Our kids love the recipes as well! Now my entire family can enjoy eating the same meals together and I don't have to spend time cooking separate meals. Woohoo! The recipes are also fairly easy and not too fussy. It strikes the perfect balance between gourmet taste and practicality! And we are finding many recipes that will work well given that we are only stage 2 right now (we redid the intro this past summer). This is not one of those cookbooks that is only useful once you are in advanced stages of healing; it has much to offer those still in the early phases. If you only buy one SCD cookbook, I highly recommend this one. It has brought new joy and appreciation to family mealtime!

Everyday Grain-Free Gourmet: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Review

Everyday Grain-Free Gourmet: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you already own the first book, Grain-Free Gourmet, you will still be happy with this second book. There is further info. about the SCD and about fats. There are the standard recipes, like for yogurt, sauces, and jams. Then there are recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc. These are recipes normal people can prepare and will enjoy. There are tips on how to cook the basics like baked cauliflower or steamed veggies. There are also menu guides.
I have been on this diet for four weeks and am especially looking forward to trying out the recipes for Caramel Fondue, Glazed Pound Cake, and Peanut Butter Caramel Crisps, among others! There are plenty of healthy and delicious recipes in this book--I am really happy I took a gamble and ordered this book without first getting to look through it.
I think that anybody who is on the SCD or even someone who is just trying to reduce their grain intake will be very satisfied with the content of this book.

Gluten-Free Baking Classics Review

Gluten-Free Baking Classics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had the great good fortune of meeting Annalise about eight months ago at a celiac support group meeting. I had previously used a recipe of hers (available on her Foodphilosopher website) for angelfood cake. I was impressed with it and was really looking forward to the publication of this cookbook.
This is gluten free baking with no apologies. Annalise is a very wise lady, passionate in her quest for excellence in gluten free baking. She has gone into the kitchen and rethought how we bake with gluten free flours. The result is an amazing collection of recipes that can go anywhere with the wheat-eating crowd and pass as the "real" thing.
Texturally her products are moist and don't have the grainy mouth feel for which gluten free baked goods are notorious. And taste - she points out in her introduction how much flavor wheat flour has, and then proceeds to compensate for the lack of flavor in the gluten free flours by carefully rethinking her porportions of fats, liquids and flavorings. The result is, product after product, items that not only look beautiful but truly taste delicious. I used to call the lack of flavor in a gf product the "dead spot" - something was missing in my gf baking, but I didn't know what. Annalise's recipes fill that spot completely.
I've been baking for over 40 years. I've been baking gluten free for almost 7 years. I've bought breads ready made, baked from mixes and from scratch. I have had the great pleasure of tasting Annalise's breads, made by her own hand, on a few occasions at our local celiac support group meetings. These are outstanding in terms of crunch, crust and flavor. She has made a real breakthrough with her French/Submarine bread recipes.
I have personally baked the chocolate chip muffins, lemon squares and chocolate ricotta muffins from this book. They are all unbelievably good. I have had a wonderful time making her angelfood cake in the past, and have had the pleasure of helping her test out new recipes for cinnamon buns and a crumb cake. My family of five (three gf eaters) are all impressed. And my non-allergic daughter, who still can and does eat wheat, can't wait for me to bake the crumb cake again - she probably ate 1/2 of the first one by herself.
A word of warning - while Annalise's flour blend for cakes and muffins may look "traditional" to you, it is not. Don't think that this is the "same old same old" - it is not. And, when Annalise advises using a specific brand of brown rice flour (Authentic Foods) in her blend because of the fine grind, pay attention folks! It really makes a difference in the end product.
Did I mention that Gourmet Magazine ran a November, 2005 article spotlighting her recipes? Go buy the book and bake all these goodies you've been missing. That's what I'm doing for my family.
Susan
Northern New Jersey Celiac Support Group

100 Best Gluten-Free Recipes Review

100 Best Gluten-Free Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you cook gluten-free from scratch, it's smart to commit to a few recipe sources, because every source has its own flour blend, and it can make you crazy having to pay for, make, store, and use up, all those blends. I've tried them all, and I threw my lot in with Carol a long time ago for these reasons:
1) She pays attention to good nutrition (higher protein, lower fat, and higher fiber, without sacrificing texture, taste or appearance).
2) Her recipes are honest, sensible and reliable.
3) Everyone, GF or not, likes what I make.
4) Carol's very good at spotting trends and including the best ones in her books (who wants to be left out of yummy things like Crispy Goat Cheese Rounds?).
Mixing up her sorghum flour blend will take you back to your pre-GF days: the feel, appearance and scent are wonderful.
100 BEST GF RECIPES is compact, up-to-date, beautiful, and surefire. And, no matter how long you have been cooking and baking GF, you will always learn something new and useful reading Carol's Introductions; they're like a GF primer and refresher course in one.
I have recommended this book to the newly diagnosed, to veterans, and to those non-GF heroes who want to cook GF for their friends or family members. It's fairly priced and you won't regret it.

The 125 Best Gluten-Free Recipes Review

The 125 Best Gluten-Free Recipes
Average Reviews:

I am totally impressed with this cookbook. I have adapted recipes and cooked for my celiac husband for over 10 years and I thought I knew a lot about good gluten free baking. However, this book has given me a ton of good ideas (and recipes that work) and has rekindled my interest in baking. I particularly liked the lemon yogurt scones, shortcake, and white cake recipes.
I tried the breadmaker recipe for white bread and for the first time produced bread that looked good, was sliceable, tasted great (according to my husband) and was so easy to make. Not to mention much cheaper than buying it at a specialty bakery! Another plus is that the recipes are good enough for me (a non-celiac) too! The wealth of information about alternative flours has given me the means to adapt a lot of my own recipes successfully.

Cooking for Isaiah: Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free Recipes for Easy Delicious Meals Review

Cooking for Isaiah: Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Recipes for Easy Delicious Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been gluten free for about 9 years now, and I can't tell you how many recipes and flour combinations I have tried - mostly without success, at least in the bread department. I wasn't sure about buying another gluten free cookbook, but decided to try it out anyway. I wanted to make the pizza first since bread recipes are the hardest (in my humble opinion) to re-create gluten free. The pizza was delicious and has been the first gluten free bread that I have tried that actually emulates its wheat counterparts. Buy the book! I'm sure you won't be disappointed. There is a wide variety of recipes: pizza, doughnuts, risotto, pumpkin dumplings, coffee cake, etc.

"The cornbread was flavorful, moist and light with a deliciously tender crumb. My only hope with this recipe was that Isaiah would love it... And then Isaiah took a bite. The look on his face was pure heaven." Cooking for Isaiah is a love story of Silvana Nardone's journey to develop great-tasting meals for her son, Isaiah, after he was diagnosed with food intolerances to gluten and dairy. The results of her efforts are found in the pages of this book, through 135 recipes that are not only easy to make, but taste and look delicious. From "S'mores Pancakes with Marshmallow Sauce" to "Double-Decker Toasted Cornbread and Spicy Greens Stack," and "Chicken and Waffles with Maple Bacon Gravy" to "Chocolate Birthday Cake with Whipped Chocolate Frosting," all of the recipes in Cooking for Isaiah are entirely free of gluten and dairy. Crafted with a variety of cooks in mind, an ingredient substitution chart shows you what to swap if, for example, you need to cook without gluten, but dairy is okay. You'll also find Silvana's tried-and-tested all-purpose flour and pancake mix recipes, sure to make gluten-free cooking and baking accessible to all. Written by Silvana Nardone, Editor in Chief of Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine, this charming, personal cookbook belongs on every cook's shelf.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Gluten-Free Eating Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Gluten-Free Eating
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Gluten Free Eating is a very comprehensive resource for newly diagnosed celiacs. The beginning chapters discuss why celiacs cannot eat gluten and the diagnosis process without getting too technical or overwhelming the reader with obscure medical tidbits. The next chapter explains which foods are safe and not safe to eat and explains how to decipher food labels and eliminate potentially harmful ingredients. There are also alphabetized lists of foods that are safe and not safe to eat. I consider all of these lists as part of a gluten free encyclopedia, which is pretty neat and very useful. I find it so easy to just look up any food I'm unsure of here. And even though the unsafe food lists look long and scary, this book does a great job at reassuring celiacs that their lives as they know them are not over. There is even an entire chapter devoted to building the self-esteems of celiacs and dealing with family and friends who just don't seem to understand the gluten free diet.
The book also recommends gluten free packaged products that are favorites of celiacs everywhere. There is also an entire chapter devoted to the ins and outs of gluten free alcohol. There are also recipes for cookies, pancakes, breads, pasta dishes and an all purpose baking mix. The authors even map out a gluten free meal plan for an entire week that's full of healthy, low fat foods and has substitutions for vegetarians. The book ends with a crash course on eating out, taking out and staying healthy on the gluten free diet. Overall this book is very helpful to newly diagnosed celiacs and their families. It's very easy to follow and written in fun, simple English. It's also sprinkled with "Good for You" tips by Tricia Thompson and cute anecdotes from the "Fearless Eater". This book is even great for celiacs who need a confidence boost or people looking for more diet options and recipes.

Gluten, be gone! Gluten intolerance affects almost three million Americans with painful and frustrating symptoms. Although testing for it is fairly simple, it can be difficult to diagnose—and the only treatment is a strict gluten-free diet for life. Armed with this book, post-diagnosis readers can meet the challenge. It contains lists of "legal" and "illegal" foods, food substitutions, a lesson in how to find gluten in food labels and keep flavor in gluten-free meals, and a section on dieting.

500 Low-Carb Recipes: 500 Recipes from Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love Review

500 Low-Carb Recipes: 500 Recipes from Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First let me say that I own many, many low-carb cookbooks, and this one is THE best I have ever read! Not only does it offer 500, yes, 500 recipes that are easy, fabulous and low carb, but the introduction and ingredient chapters were SPECTACULAR! The introduction was warm, witty and informative. I typically skim through the beginning chapters and get right to the recipes, but I couldn't put this one down! So many questions that I had were answered in the Low Carb Specialty Foods chapter, not to mention the Polyols chapter and the Where to Find Low-Carb Specialty Products chapter (she doesn't like paying through the nose for this stuff, either)!
The Ingredients You Need to Know About section was the absolute best--necessary and unique information about eggs, fats/oils, flour substitutes (what the heck are guar and xanthan gums, anyway--she answers that, too!), sweeteners (wow, I can have molasses!), vegetables (and I can have carrots, too!), and oh so much more. Her first recipe is addictive enough to eat every day (Heroin Wings)! I wish I could say that I've made all the recipes, but I'm so busy trying out the recipes from the first chapter, I haven't even looked at the other chapters yet, but believe me, I know they'll be outstanding.
This author is down-to-earth, funny and charming. I can relate to her so well. She stresses over and over again to listen to your body and let that be your guide regardless of whether the food is low-carb. This works so well for me. The BEST book you will ever purchase on low-carbing and low-carb recipes. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!

Low-fat or low-carb? A recent New York Times Magazine (July 7, 2002) cover story answered this question and said that Dr. Atkins was right all along, "its not fat that makes us fat but carbohydrates." Though the government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in research trying to prove that fat is the cause of obesity, there has been a subtle shift in the scientific consensus over the past five years supporting what the low-carb diet doctors have been saying all along: if we eat less carbohydrates, we will lose weight and live longer. One of the toughest challenges of any diet is having enough variety and choices to keep the dieter from losing interest. The most common reason that people abandon their diet is boredom but 500 LOW CARB RECIPES: 500 Recipes, From Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love by Dana Carpender has more than enough recipes to keep even the most finicky dieter on track. With recipes for everything including hors dÆoeuvres, snacks, breads, muffins, side dishes, entrees, cookies, cakes and much more, this is an endless supply for creating meals for the whole family night after night.Whether everyone in the family is on a diet or not, these recipes are proven winners with adults and kids alike. Also included:
Many one-dish meals for single people--main dish salads, skillet suppers that include meat and vegetables, and hearty soups that are a full meal in a bowl.
Ideas for breaking out of old ways of looking at food with suggestions that save time and money and change what is considered a normal meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
