This book was "just okay". It was chockful of simple food items that I would not serve to guests that I am trying to impress at a dinner party. Boiled red potatoes with parsley....I don't think so....Not interesting enough for me, nothing in this book catches the eye....if you want extreme simple this is the book for you. Another dud....

Forget the stressful dinner party for twelve. How many home cooks really drag out the china, silver, and linen more than a few times a year these days? Mom’s very best crowd-cuisine is fun, relaxed, and informal. From a hungry group of the kids’ friends looking for afternoon munchies to a potluck office farewell party to a 4th of July barbecue for the neighborhood, today’s typical gatherings are casual occasions to share hearty, homemade food.Mom’s Best Crowd-Pleasers is full of recipes that reflect the way Mom really cooks today, simply tailored to feed eight or more people. Cucumber Sandwiches, Quesadillas, and Sweet and Sour Meatballs are all simple finger foods perfect for after-work get-togethers, book club meetings, and informal baby showers. Muffalettas, All-American Hamburgers, and deep bowls of Summer Fruit Salad and Broccoli-Rice Salad are delicious at backyard cookouts, tailgate parties, and summer pool parties. And Three-Cheese Noodle Bake, Cuban Black Beans, and Baked Barbecued Chicken will attract happy fans whenever the potluck gathering calls for a hearty hot dish. Most recipes are designed to feed eight hungry people, but author (and home cook) Andrea Chesman provides advice throughout on expanding recipes, stretching dishes when the dinner seating unexpectedly grows from eight to eleven people, using clever shortcuts that make cooking for a crowd no more difficult than cooking for four, and generallymaintaining a degree of sanity as more people come flooding through the front door.As always, Chesman’s primary accomplishment is to provide homey, hearty tastes that satisfy modern palates, yet still bear the unmistakable stamp of Mom’s Best.

Cooking for a Crowd: Menus, Recipes and Strategies for Entertaining 10 to 50 Review

Cooking for a Crowd: Menus, Recipes and Strategies for Entertaining 10 to 50
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
`Cooking for a Crowd' by Susan Wyler has come out in a new, substantially larger edition, based on a volume originally published in 1988, and I, for one, am really happy to see it. Among all the various genres of cookbooks, those dedicated to cooking for large numbers of people are very difficult to find. Even many works on meals for entertaining only cover recipes for six to twelve. Of those books I have reviewed, the most notable exception is Martha Stewart's now classic original book, `Entertaining' which gives us recipes for 25 or more. As a dedicated viewer of the Food Network, I can also say with some authority that in all their programming for the last four years, I have seen but one show done on Tyler Florence's `Food 911' show which gives recipes for feeding a large crowd. Even otherwise excellent cookbooks such as David Waltuck's `Staffmeals' doesn't give us recipes for serving a large group of people, and I am sure he feeds a lot more than eight or twelve people at his restaurant's staff dinner. And, the only other book I have seen (the name escapes me, as I have not yet reviewed it) costs a whopping $60 retail for something no larger than the usual $35 Culinary Institute of America or `Cooks Illustrated' volume.
I have to believe there is no great market for this subject, although I am amazed that I can find more books on the cooking of Tuscany than I can on cooking for a church fundraising dinner. This, of course, is not true of baking, especially bread baking, as there are many books that deal seriously with professional bread baking and techniques for multiplying recipes by relatively large amounts.
Cookbook publishing executives must simply never hear of any crying need for these kinds of books, or, cookbook authors simply have little interest in writing them. Before exploring Ms. Wyler's book, lets think out loud a bit on what it takes to make four to six interesting dishes for fifty (50) people. I have some grounds for doing this, as I have been a sous chef in a church kitchen where we have done exactly this for the last several years.
First, you need dishes that can be made ahead, refrigerated for a day or two, and heated up at the last minute.
Second, you need some dishes such as salads that do not require reheating, and will also not wilt down overnight in the refrigerator, in order to not overload your ovens.
Third, dishes with relatively inexpensive and common ingredients are best. You do not want to price your macaroni salad to $5 a portion by adding 100-year-old balsamic vinegar.
Fourth, you probably want ingredients that are available the year around, and are of reasonable quality the year around. Thus, apples, white mushrooms, broccoli, dried pasta, and ground beef are excellent ingredients while asparagus, dandelion greens, peaches, and grapefruit may not be good the year around.
Fifth, you want recipes where amateurs can do the prep work, and I don't mean dedicated amateur foodies.
Sixth, you need dishes that will keep well in either heated hotel pans or large slow cookers. Dishes with gravies that may separate shortly after reheating will not do.
Seventh, you should be able to do most recipes without a lot of specialized equipment, but if a food processor will whiz up lots of slicing and dicing, it's good to have that info.
Ms. Wyler's book hits the mark on almost all these counts.
In addition to getting high marks on my points, she has done especially well to arrange her recipes by both type of occasion and by number of guests, assuming that you will have a lot more people coming to a wedding supper than you will to a family Thanksgiving dinner. And, before you complain that you can find recipes for a Thanksgiving dinner in any one of a dozen books and magazines such as Nigella Lawson's `Feast' and the November issue of `Martha Stewart Living', I should point out that Ms. Wyler does it for twelve people and a goose rather than a turkey!
And, these are not all simple recipes. This may be a violation of one or more of my criteria, but I like the fact that we get recipes for making our own lasagna noodles and brown goose stock. You don't have to make these, but having the resource to do it is a very good thing (with apologies to Martha).
I am not overly impressed with cookbooks which give extensive do ahead instructions for all their recipes, as Sara Moulton always did on her Food Network Show, `Sara's Secrets'. What good is a three day do ahead cycle, when on the first and second days, you are busy getting dinner on the table for that night, let alone getting ready for the next night's dinner. I'm much happier with Rachael Ray's few tips on fast cooking, even if I never use her recipes. Ms. Wyler also does not limit herself to one or two days advance preparations. Some pantry items can be prepared up to a few months in advance. For pickled dishes, this is great, as it allows you to gather a great crowd together and do your chow-chow or jardiniere off line.
Ms. Wyler gives us menus for thirty-five different events, with some buffets, mostly sit-down dinners, some grilling events, and some breakfasts and brunches. Every menu includes at least a salad, a main course, and a dessert. Many, especially Thanksgiving and buffets include a second main course and several side dishes.
I am a little surprised that the author does not recommend wines for each menu, but you will not miss this unless you MUST have wine at every meal.
A very nice treatment of a specialized subject.

Susan Wyler's indispensable classic is back in print-now better than ever, with more than a dozen new menus, over 70 new recipes, and a wealth of updated strategiesThe original edition of Cooking for a Crowd won great praise all around: Florence Fabricant named it one of the New York Times best books of the season. Perla Meyers, author of How to Peel a Peach, advised, "Keep this book as a reference whenever you are entertaining." And Rose Levy Berenbaum, author of The Cake Bible, declared, "She puts together the components of a dinner with the passion, perfection, and ease of a master painter. The game plans . . . enable any cook to impress without risk."This new edition builds on the premise of the original-that many a home cook can manage the occasional dinner party for 4 to 6, but when it comes to entertaining a crowd of 10 or more, the logistics become exponentially more complicated. Wyler's ingeniously user-friendly combination of creative menus, do-ahead game plans, and crowd-pleasing recipes makes it possible for any home cook to entertain on a large scale.Wyler has expanded the volume to include over 225 recipes and 35 menus for a variety of sizes and occasions-such as Tuscan Lunch for 12 to 16, Black and Orange Halloween Party for 24, even a Wedding Supper for 50.A perfect balance of inspiring and instructive, Cooking for a Crowd is a must-have for all home cooks who want to bring large groups of family and friends together at the table.

Barefoot Contessa Parties Ideas and Recipes for Easy Parties That Are Really Fun Review

Barefoot Contessa Parties Ideas and Recipes for Easy Parties That Are Really Fun
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ina Garten has brought sanity and great food to entertaining at home.
The great thing about this book is the style everything is served and prepared in, though it uses a bit more fat than I would cook with for everyday meals. She is a friend of Martha Stewart but her recipes are very un-Martha like in preparation. Ina does not have a staff of hundreds to make everything just perfect for that dinner party for the magazine. This lady runs a business on her culinary skill - she does what works with a minimum amount of fuss - it tastes wonderful AND looks great.
I have received rave reviews for the Sour Cream Coffee Cake, the Happy Birthday! meal, and the Chocolate Ganache Cake. The Chocolate Cake went over big. It was so easy to make, it was an afterthought while putting together a meal for six at the very last minute.
You will not be disappointed with this cookbook.

Now I know that we can't all go to Texas to have an authentic Tex-Mex fiesta, but the ideas are great none the less. Who care's if no one comes dressed the part? This book is all about themes. Themes that you can manipulate and call your own. Each party is beautifully photographed and the recipes are delicious. They even offer her infamous "Good Things" as a sidebar for many of the parties. Don't let the perfection overwhelm you. This book delievers.

The Joy of Cooking is a great cookbook, but The Surreal Gourmet's style makes it fun to read and try recipes. The recipes are popular favorites presented in an easy-to-follow format. At the end there are drink recipes, basics (stock, pesto, etc), and tips on setting up your kitchen, even music recommendations. The book lives up to it's title with cool illustrations and a refreshing style that is definitely surreal compared to other cookbooks.

Dining with the Dollar Diva: Divalicious Recipes with Ingredients Costing a Dollar or Less
Average Reviews:

In today's economy whether it's a family of four or a single person, people are always looking for ways to stretch a dollar at the dinner table. Fisher serves up delicious menus in, DINING WITH THE DIVA DOLLAR with affordable meals of ingredients bought with a dollar or less. As a single parent on a strict budget, she had to learn to stretch her dollar. She began shopping at discount food stores where ingredients cost a dollar and supermarkets that offered 10 for $10 food items.
The cookbook is divided into four categories with a space for notes at the end of each category. Sprinkled throughout the cookbook are diva tidbits, ingredient substitutions, and the directions, which are very easy to follow. Who would have thought a can of biscuits had so many uses? As I read through this delectable gem, I couldn't help but to bookmark the recipes I anticipate to try, especially the Butterfinger Brownies. Fisher adds a lot of humor and with love named recipes after family and friends.
DINING WITH THE DOLLAR DIVA: Divalicious Menus with Ingredients Costing a $1 or Less has found a home among my collection of cookbooks. I recommend this cookbook for the beginner and experienced cook.

Forking Fantastic: Put the Party Back in Dinner Party Review

Forking Fantastic: Put the Party Back in Dinner Party
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, I've only had this book for 24 hours, so the recipes are not battle-tested, with the exception of a yummy Spanish Tortilla I made with leftovers last night (think frittata, not mexican tortilla). Having said that, I love the spirit of the book. It's aimed at someone who basically never throws a dinner party because of the stress involved. The recipes, shopping tips, etc all emphasize maximum deliciousness with least effort - for instance, it recommends never peeling a vegetable. It correctly identifies the surprising tastiness of frozen peas. I could go on.
The pleasure the authors take in a wine-infused, too-many-people-in-a-small-apartment kind of a dinner party is infectious. All in all, if the use of the f-word bothers you, or you want your dinner to look great in photographs, look elsewhere. If you've been meaning to get 8 people over for dinner more often, and want some help, this is just the ticket.

The $50 Dinner Party: 26 Dinner Parties that Won't Break Your Bank, Your Back, Or Your Schedule
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have you ever been at work on a Wednesday and decided just to invite some people over for dinner on Friday? This is the book to pull out in just those situations.
My inital concern was that this was going to be a pasta-only kind of thing. I mean the $50 limit can be a little intimidating. But no, there's everything in here for both carnivores and vegetarians. I made the dijon-sherry flank steak last night and it was tremendous!
I love the fact that Sally obviously lives in the real world! Don't have time to marinate for 2 or 3 hours? She says fine, throw in in the fridge overnight and pull it out when you get home. Her menus are logical and easy to use. She even gives options of how to make adjustments whether you want to cook inside or out or even change a side dish.
This is a great book for people (like me) who have trouble deciding what goes with what. It takes the guess work out of it. I really recommend it. Invite some people over. Have them bring wine!

Around the Table: Easy Menus for Cozy Entertaining at Home
Average Reviews:

I was expecting a sophisticated collection of easy recipes, more in the vein of the Barefoot Contessa books, but this is merely a rehash of 70's suburban-housewife buffet food. Do we really need a recipe for franks and beans? And scrambled eggs with Velveeta? Also surprised that the apparently talented photographer took on this book...some of the food looks truly unappetizing, for instance the creamed spinach on page 121. Very disappointing book.
