A Bite Off Mama's Plate: Mothers' and Daughters' Connections through Food Review

A Bite off Mama's Plate is a trip through time and into every woman's heart. Each chapter will bring to mind analogous events in the reader's life. Perhaps readers will record spinoffs in the Foxfire tradition for their own families to treasure.
As we approach the holidays, it is vital to remember the words of one food writer: "Without food, plenty of it and lovingly prepared, we might kill one another."
And if you don't read it, you may never know what a "bosom biscuit" is, one of the most delicious symbols in the book.

Miriam Meyers celebrates the positive role that food plays in the mother-daughter relationship. Despite their increasing freedom to pursue other roles in society, women still retain primary responsibility for food-related tasks in the home. With that responsibility comes considerable work, but it also affords women in families a special opportunity for companionship, communication, learning, and inspiration. To illuminate the ways women use this role to connect with their daughters, Meyers combines original research, encompassing focus groups, interviews, and a national survey, with a personal memoir and a wide range of other sources. She shows, in women's own voices, how food offers, more than just nourishment for the body, something for the mind, heart, and soul.

Amelia And Eleanor Go For A Ride Review

Amelia And Eleanor Go For A Ride

As the parent of a curious 5-year-old, I've been disappointed by the scarcity of historical and biographical books aimed at very young children. My daughter had an interest in Amelia Earhart since she first saw her "red plane" at the Smithsonian, so I took a gamble and bought this book for her at Christmas time...and she loved it. In fact, she liked it so much that she's insisted on giving it to several of her girl friends as gifts. It was a big hit with them as well. In fact a couple of their mothers have asked me where I got it (Amazon, of course), and whether the author has written any other children's books.
The story is simple, fun, historical, and symbolically significant (without being didactic or political). The black and white illustrations are interesting to look at, and very detailed (even the pattern on the White House china in the background is historically accurate).
With their colorful personalities, and the strength to defy cultural expectations, Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt make great role models for little girls -- and it doesn't hurt for them to understand that the freedoms they will surely take for granted in their lives were won for all of us by women like these.

I agree with this book's subtitle: 12 Fabulous Parties for Women's Ministry. Fabulous definitely describes this book! What a great mixture of great recipes, party tips, discussion starters and more. Organized by seasons and accented with beautiful colored photos, Party Divas! is easy to use. Whether you use some of the recipes for your own household or invite a group of girlfriends together to cook up a feast, you'll feel like an accomplished chef. Add recommended serving tips, simple decorations, invitation tips, music and more, and you'll have a complete party. Best of all, you can get a group of girlfriends together and try each party idea and recipes, one by one. Find out what you like and then share the ideas with others. Use it as a way to connect with other women who like to cook and host parties...especially those you might not connect with for any other reason. This is a great way to build friendships.

Entertaining Disasters: A Novel (With Recipes) Review

Entertaining Disasters: A Novel (With Recipes)

The title is very misleading. It's more a book about the protagonist's (and I suspect the author's) dysfunctional family than preparing for the big dinner party. Why do so many books these days have to be about dysfunctional families? I'm sick of it already. The protagonist also thinks it's rocket science to throw a dinner party. Get over it. Very formulaic. If author had stuck to the one idea, the book would probably have been too short to publish.
