Healthy Calendar Diabetic Cooking: A Full Year of Simple, Menus and Easy Recipes Review

Healthy Calendar Diabetic Cooking: A Full Year of Simple, Menus and Easy Recipes

I received this book in Feb., but started with the first week of recipes. Most of the meals have been good, some have been excellent. They seem to be right in line with low glycemic diet guidelines. Several meals that claim to serve 4 didn't serve 3. I have skipped some meals, but have tried several new herbs and vegs.
One reservation--not everyone can tolerate chili, cumin, cayenne pepper, and other "hot" food items. Suggestions for alternate flavorings would have been nice.
I intend to keep using this book to the end, and then start over again, with my own notes and reminders on each recipe I have already tried.

Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook: Everyday Meals, Easy as 1-2-3 Review

Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook: Everyday Meals, Easy as 1-2-3

I am completely baffled by this book and the reviews it has received! After only a few pages I was aghast and realized I had thrown my money away.
I am not a medical professional or scientist but all of my own personal research into diabetes and related blood disorders strongly recommend avoiding refined carbohydrates. This book is full of recipes using highly refined carbohydrates: white sugar and white flour.
I also found recipes containing an uncomfortably high percentage of calories from fat. I expected recipes emphasizing whole, low glycemic foods prepared in as close to their natural state as possible - foods that had as much of their beneficial properties (such as nutrients and fiber) intact. I was extremely disappointed by what this book had to offer and am sorry I bought it.

Hats off to Doris Cross! She's produced yet another spectacular cookbook! The recipes in this book are absolutely delicious, easy to prepare, and don't require bizarre ingredients. The taste is sensational; you think you're eating high-fat dishes when you aren't! The dishes are simple enough for everyday fare, yet elegant enough for a dinner party. Of the many cookbooks I've purchased since being diagnosed with diabetes, the ones by Doris Cross are far and away my favorites!!

Diabetic Meals in 30 Minutes--Or Less Review

Diabetic Meals in 30 Minutes--Or Less
Average Reviews:

This is a terrific cookbook to have handy, whether you're cooking for yourself, a whole family, or even for friends for a casual dinner. The recipes aren't fancy, but they put things together in a way you might not think to do otherwise, or give directions for something you've been wanting to try but haven't because the recipes you've found in other cookbooks have been too complicated. So far, I've found that if I make a recipe from this book once, it quickly becomes a recipe that I fix regularly, because it's quick and I often have all of the ingredients in my pantry already -- and even when I don't, a quick trip to the convenience store or supermarket is all that's needed, because the recipes don't call for obscure items that require hunting down in specialty stores. Even if no one in your home/family has diabetes, this is a great, basic recipe book to have around for those nights when you're feeling less than inspired to come up with something new on your own.

This is fabulous cookbook! Cooking has never been my favoirte pastime, and I hate spending a long time in the kitchen. Not only are these recipes fast and easy, they are also enjoyable to make. I've tried several diabetic cookbooks, and the recipes in this one are by far the tastiest. In fact, I like the taste of these recipes more than my "normal" cookbooks. I also love that you get your meat and veggies all in one place without having to put thought into a well balanced meal. It's a wonderful cookbook! I highly recommend it.

Ultimate Diabetes Meal Planner: A Complete System for Eating Healthy with Diabetes Review

Ultimate Diabetes Meal Planner: A Complete System for Eating Healthy with Diabetes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a cookbook I was really looking forward to because it is written by a diabetic, not just an educator who has studied about diabetes. The author freely shares that she is type 1 and how she has to work hard to manage it. In the many cookbooks I have read, it is very rare to have one actually written by a diabetic.
And her insights into what it means to try and meal plan as a diabetic are priceless. To me that is one of the greatest strengths of this book. Unfortunately the actual book didn't measure up, or give her the chance I feel she needed to shine.
THE PROS:
Larger font and layout makes it easier to read the recipes - this should be a standard for all diabetic books.
Many meal plans and calorie levels to choose from.
THE CONS:
No pictures at all - I realize that it adds to the cost to put in color pictures but that's an expense I would be willing to pay. Without any pictures it is a very text heavy book.
Recipes have VERY Misleading Names-
For example, take the recipe on page 288 titled, "All Natural High Fiber Peach Squares" But, it is made using Splenda which is artificial and anything but "natural". The fiber is only 2 grams which is not high fiber at all. A high fiber rating needs be 5 grams or more which, as diabetics know, anything over 5 grams can be subtracted from the total carbohydrate count - thus lowering the amount of impact the carbs will have on the blood sugar.
Not enough of the author in the book-
Ms. Higgins does share some from her personal experience in a few pages at the front of the book, but I feel she should have had many more pages of advice and insight scattered throughout the book. I personally wanted more of her advice about the recipes and how to keep motivated as a diabetic; after all it's my understanding that this book came about from the many requests of the people who attended her classes at the fitness club. OVERALL
I gave it two stars for those reasons, but still if you really need somewhere to start in your meal planning journey this is a good place. And maybe we'll be seeing more from her in another book soon, make no mistake her story is very inspiring!
