Formula 101: Maintaining 40-30-30 Nutrition for a Lifetime Review

Formula 101: Maintaining 40-30-30 Nutrition for a Lifetime
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own the original "40-30-30 Fat burning Nutrition" which is my favorite...then I bought the Formula. I like it, but it seems as though they went to great lengths so stretch a small book into a large one. And then they really did it for the Formula 101. There are generalized concepts presented here, but none go into detail about how to implement them. There are stories of clients that sound fabricated. And in every recipe box is a reminder of all the recipes in the other book, The Formula, as well as a reminder that if you want to know more about whey protein, you can consult the appendix. Enough already. I love the Daoust's diet and their first book, and the second is okay...but, really!!!! This 3rd book reminds me of someone trying to stretch a college essay into the required number of pages and using alot of long wordy sentences that say nothing to get there. I am returning my copy in favor of the first two books. For those who don't own the first two, this does not explain the diet so it would be futile to own it by itself.

The Best of Cooking with 3 Ingredients Review

The Best of Cooking with 3 Ingredients
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great cookbook for those with little cooking experience. Most other cookbooks have one, or at the most two recipes per page because of the space needed for complex preparation instructions. That is not the case at all with this cookbook. These recipes are simple enough that they only require two to four sentences to explain how to prepare the dish from start to finish.
Of course, when you are limiting yourself to only three ingredients you find that you end up with a lot of side dishes and vegetable recipes. But, there are plenty of main dishes so a well-balanced meal can be prepared. A few of my favorites include Rosemary-Roasted Potatoes, Honey-Orange Glazed Chicken, and June Ballard's Cajun Chicken. To keep the ingredient list to just three the recipes take advantage of many mixes like box cake mixes or stuffing mixes. Basically it hits all the high points for the new or hurried cook - quick and easy to prepare, goof-proof, minimal cleanup, and tasty results.
Another nice feature is the section with complete menu suggestions. Ruthie Warnall has compiled a suggested Valentine Dinner Menu, Easy Dinner for New Brides, Easy Sunday Dinner, Quick Gourmet Dinner, Pot Roast Dinner, Turkey Dinner, Chicken Dinner, and Romantic Dinners for Special Occasions. Each of the dinners contains only items from the cookbook and so are all easy to prepare with minimal fuss.
Comb bound so it lies flat when you are working with it, it is a recommended read for new cooks (or college kids just out of the house) and those with a tight family schedule.

Talking with My Mouth Full: Crab Cakes, Bundt Cakes, and Other Kitchen Stories Review

Talking with My Mouth Full: Crab Cakes, Bundt Cakes, and Other Kitchen Stories
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What a delightful book!! A mouthwatering book with great "conversation", traveling tidbits, and recipes.
I will definitely make the Gas Company Candy -- too bad today's utility bills aren't "sweetened" with such welcomed inserts.
Since I live in the DC area, I really resonated with (and enjoyed) all the descriptions of the Lexington market, Eastern Market, the delightful La Cuisine, and of course, the inimitable Bawlmor - what great memories (culinary and otherwise) this evoked!!
My only disappointment came when the book ended -- it felt like I was in the middle of eating a GREAT meal and suddenly all the food was taken away from the table! Oh please, if you re-issue this book -- put a picture (in color) of one of those sweet creations you wrote about, like maybe Smith Island Cake, on the last page, so we do not feel such a let-down!!!

I got this book as a gift. I was disappointed to see that many of the recipes are not gluten free, but instead there is a blurb on the bottom of the page that tells you how to make it gluten free. I expected all of the recipes to be dairy free, wheat free, and gluten free but they weren't.

Change Your Brain, Change Your Body Cookbook (2 CD Set) Review

Change Your Brain, Change Your Body Cookbook (2 CD Set)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I perused Change Your Brain, Change Your Body Cookbook at my local bn and found it to be really pretty but not up to what I was hoping for. It lists 50 brain boosters such as salmon and almonds and then has recipes that include those brain boosters with notations on the recipe as to how many brain boosters it has. these 50 superfoods are also listed on his website which you could look at for free and then apply this to any old cookbook. I much prefer the The Younger (Thinner) You Diet: How Understanding Your Brain Chemistry Can Help You Lose Weight, Reverse Aging, and Fight Disease that breaks it down to which neurotransmitters are being supported in each recipe as well as list of spices, herbs, foods, ingredients so that you can customize your own meals; in that book each menu is notated with whether it boosts GABA, dopamine, serotonin, or acetylcholine. This information helps you to boost the aspects of your brain that you want boosted and not possibly cause more of an inbalance to your neurotransmitter ratio levels by further stimulating those that are already too high in relation to the others. Change Your Brain, Change Your Body Cookbook is also one of the thinnest cookbooks I've held in years. However, Amen's cookbook is prettier with beautiful photos; I will pass on it though as I already know what is in this cookbook; if you want a basic beginning superfood cookbook, though, you might really enjoy this one.
Another cookbook I prefer for more nutrient-dense foods is Eat For Health: Lose Weight, Keep It Off, Look Younger, Live Longer (2 book set) and Dr. Fuhrman's Secrets to Healthy Cooking DVD

My wife and I have tried only five recipes from this cookbook so far (we are slowly making our way through it), and all have been great. Very simple to prepare, very flavorful, and mostly healthy. I would definitely recommend this to any beginner cook, and there are some great ideas for those of us who have been cooking a lot longer. Have Her Over for Dinner Review

Have Her Over for Dinner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This cookbook is for the experienced chef to the absolutely clueless (myself) and everyone in between. My wife as been cooking since birth and I finally cooked my first 4 course meal using this guide and we both love it. If you have mastered the microwave and cereal is just not impressing like it used to, this is a very simple guide to transition into making elaborate meals with very simple step by step instructions. I have tried following instructions from other cookbooks in the past and they either over complicate the instructions with excessive details or use terminology Gordon Ramsey could not pronounce. Unlike other cookbooks, this one does have a detailed glossary for all cooking terms and clearly defines their meaning and how they are used in each dish. If you are an experienced cook, there are several meals with complexity to keep the challenge alive in your everyday cooking as well as special occasions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to cook or those who never thought they could cook a delicious, elaborate meal simply and easily. You will not be disappointed!!!

Let's face it, today we are inundated with articles about cooking, food, and wine in almost every part of our lives. From The Wall Street Journal to Playboy Magazine, you'd be hard pressed not to find a commentary related to the subject of food.At a time when I'm trying to figure out my best financial opportunities or determine which girl of the SEC is the best looking, why am I being told how to cook something? The simple answer is women.Don't get me wrong, a quick glance at any men's magazine will always yield the same redundant taglines; "Lose your Gut," "1001 Financial Solutions," or "Score your Dream Job" on the cover. However, by now the majority of writers have exhausted the subjects of health, wealth, and power as a means to attract women, and they realize that cooking is just another avenue that they can use to appeal to the wants and needs of their readers.Don't trust me?Take a stroll through the magazine aisle at your local grocery store, and you might find that even Field and Stream has gone haute-cuisine on your latest hunt.Confused by the last sentence?Good, this book is for you.

I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence Review

I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence

I have been enjoying Amy Sedaris's freaky-weird acting for years, so I had to snatch up this book the second I heard it was out. And, man oh man, I have been laughing for days. This is one addictive book, like a paper drug. I woke up this morning, and instead of thinking about my husband or cats or breakfast or my job, I imagined Amy Sedaris trying on pantyhose, and I thought "No Squirrels." (You'll understand after you read the book.) Then I wondered how on earth I would achieve that baked Alaska featured in her book.
This lady works comedic magic with this book. I have never, ever, ever read or seen anything like this strange book.
Yes, there is a plethora of valuable tips and recipes for entertaining, but the way Amy presents the info is nothing short of comic genius. The pictures are all gold. And her writing is rickety and charming. And wait till you find the secret poster! You will buy a locker just so you can hang it up!
Mark my word, this book will be *the* gift to give this holiday season. It is destined to make Amy Sedaris a household name. Plus, it is extremely useful and entertaining.

The recipes alone deserve 5 out of 5 stars. However, since I own both HTCE and the two Minimalist volumes, I was chagrined to find overlap between HTCE and each of the Minimalist books. The Minimalist books do not overlap.
Save your money-- I recommend only buying HTCE. If you are interested in the other non-overlapping recipes, borrow the book from friends or libraries.
The Minimalist cooks dinner has a much more user-friendly layout, organization than HTCE and the first Minimalist book. An ideal Bittman cookbook would be all of the recipes from his books together, with the layout and organization of this volume. That would be a truly incredible cookbook, but alas, I keep on dreaming...

This item - Guy Fiers Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives DVD and book set - is a fantastic set[...]. The book is not actually signed by the author with a pen, but digitally signed by the publisher inside the book. The Founding Foodies: How Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin Revolutionized American Cuisine Review

The Founding Foodies: How Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin Revolutionized American Cuisine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dave DeWitt really misleads a bit with the title of his book. The title is not all encompassing... he writes more of foodies, than just Washington and Jefferson, but there is little of Franklin. Although it is hard to picture John Smith as a foodie, even if feeding starving colonists at Jamestown certainly was a priority.
The stories are not just about food, but give some interesting historical aspects and debunk some myths, such as a shad run that saved soldiers at Valley Forge from starving to death. There are several versions recounted of Paul Revere's ride and the effects of rum.
Many of the historical recipes will not be palatable to modern cooks. For example: Philadelphia pepper pot...2 pounds of tripe and 4 calves feet, or Martha Washington's fruitcake...40 eggs,4 pounds of butter, 4 pounds of sugar, 5 pounds of fruit and 5 pounds of flour- bake for 5 ? hours.
There is a section recreating recipes. One especially good one is macaroni and spinach bake, Jefferson being a great fan of macaroni.
There is extensive information on Washington and Jefferson, they were well known for entertaining at their homes. The cooking, entertaining and farming and food philosophies of these two men are clearly written of and are very fascinating. A section is also included of recommended historical sites and restaurants.
Those interested in cooking and history especially admirers of Washington and Jefferson would find this a captivating book.

Who Were the Original Foodies?

Beyond their legacy as revolutionaries and politicians, the Founding Fathers of America were first and foremost a group of farmers. Passionate about the land and the bounty it produced, their love of food and the art of eating created what would ultimately become America's diverse food culture.

Like many of today's foodies, the Founding Fathers were ardent supporters of sustainable farming and ranching, exotic imported foods, brewing, distilling, and wine appreciation. Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin penned original recipes, encouraged local production of beer and wine, and shared their delight in food with friends and fellow politicians.

In The Founding Foodies, food writer Dave DeWitt entertainingly describes how some of America's most famous colonial leaders not only established America's political destiny, but also revolutionized the very foods we eat.

Features over thirty authentic colonial recipes, including:

Thomas Jefferson's ice cream
A recipe for beer by George Washington
Martha Washington's fruitcake
Medford rum punch
Terrapin soup
