90% of these recipes are ones my mom used to make. I love the recipes in this book and like the way an entire menu is planned for you. 1950's comfort food recipes that are simple to make and taste just like Mom's (I'm not kidding). I can see me using this cookbook alot. I made the spaghetti with meat sauce. At first appearance, the recipe seemed almost too easy, but turned out very good. I was pleasantly surprised. Can't wait to try the pot roast.

Dinner a Day for People with Diabetes: Creative and Healthy Recipes for Every Night of the Year Review

Dinner a Day for People with Diabetes: Creative and Healthy Recipes for Every Night of the Year
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I read the title of this book: Dinner a Day for People with Diabetes: Creative and Healthy Recipes for Every Night of the Year, I expected something similar to other books promising a dinner a day. I was looking for a book that offered dinner menu plans and the recipes to match them. This is now a common format in recipe books, following the style of the classic A Dinner a Day: Complete Meals in Minutes for Every Weeknight of the Year by Sally Sondheim. You'll notice a similarity in the titles.
That is not what you will get in this book. This is simply a recipe book with a rather small number of Entrees, and no menus of any kind.
I was surprised at how few recipes this cookbook provided. Of the 18 recipes in the Main Dishes and Casseroles chapter, fully half of them (9) are recipes for home made condensed "cream of mushroom"-type soup. Another 4 are of the single-serving variety, useful if you are cooking for one. This leaves room for 5 actual Main Dish recipes to feed your family.
With the limited number of actual meals possible from this book, less than a hundred, it seemed odd to waste a whole chapter on lamb and multiple recipes for venison. Watch out for numerous pheasant, quail, and "duck breast" recipes in the poultry chapter as well. These aren't items that even my local boutique grocer stocks. The result is a cookbook that diminishes in usefulness as an everyday reference, something it claims to be.
This may be a good diabetic cookbook. Reading through it, there are some recipes I might try, like "Slow Cooker Pork with Plum Sauce," some recipes that are completely obvious - "Slow Roasted Salmon" (sprinkle chives and oil over salmon before baking), and some that are definite adventures - "Kovbasa (Ukrainian Kielbasa)" (calling for peperivka whiskey).
There are no diabetic exchanges reported or approximated in this book. Some "Stats" are given with each recipe, but these are not all that they could be. For example, Carbohydrates are reported without separating out Fiber.
My overall assessment is that this is an interesting but slightly unfocused cookbook that is attempting to capitalize on the Dinner a Day trend. Ultimately, I'm disappointed with the deceptive marketing. Instead, choose The New Family Cookbook for People with Diabetes

This book has great recipes and heartwarming stories. My family loves the Fabulous Potatoes and Beef Burgandy. Better than the recipes (which are easy-to-prepare and delicious), are the background stores for each recipe (some made me laugh, and some made me cry).

This book has many recipes to try out and plenty of pictures that give you an idea of what the outcome should look like. There are some recipes that don't start completely from scratch but instead use products from the Nestle brand family. So far everything that I've made from it yielded tasty and delicious results. At the time when this review was written, this book was very hard to find. My advice is to purchase it if you think you might want it before they're all gone (it's a good purchase).

Cooking with All Things Trader Joe's Review

Cooking with All Things Trader Joe's
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall, this is an excellent cookbook. I've had this cookbook for about one month, and so far I love it.
First off, let me say that this book is targeted to cooks who enjoy creating "gourmet" type meals. This book isn't for you if you're looking for dishes that might show up in a cafeteria. Even though there are recipes for common things like sandwiches and casseroles, they have their own gourmet twist. So for those people who like to serve creative dishes, this cookbook is made for them.
The theory behind the book is that Trader Joe's sells many unique sauces, pre-chopped veggies, and other "half-prepped" ingredients that would normally take a cook a significant amount of time to prepare on their own. So combining the "half-prepped" ingredients of Trader Joe's and the recipes in the cookbook, you can whip up gourmet meals in a fraction of the time it would take you otherwise.
All the recipes have a large color picture, a list of ingredients (sometimes with substitutes), clear instructions, and the estimated prep time (usually in the 20-30min range). I've tried a few of the quick recipes and they have been pretty straightforward so far. The cookbook includes appetizers, entres, desserts, and a "bachelor quickies" section at the end which is basically heating pre-cooked/frozen stuff from Trader Joe's and combining them into interesting meals.
Most of the dishes are very original and look/sound delicious. There were a few recipes that I had question marks about, but I guess I'll find out how good they are once I try them.
So overall, if you like the idea of cooking original "gourmet-like" meals in a fraction of the time, and you have access to a Trader Joe's, this book is very highly recommended. Happy cooking!

Love Trader Joe's? This new independent cookbook features recipes that use ingredients all from Trader Joe's. By combining Trader Joe's unique products with fresh ingredients, Deana and Wona create clever shortcuts to quick and easy gourmet meals that are delicious and exciting. The recipes in this book treat Trader Joe's like a "prep kitchen"--using the great selection of unique sauces, mixtures, and prepped items to make flavorful, natural, homemade food in a snap. Many of the recipes are vegetarian or can easily be made vegetarian. Ethnic dishes like Saag Paneer Lasagna are scattered throughout, as well as classic comfort foods like Comfy Chicken Pot Pie. Crowd-pleasing recipes include Peanutty Sesame Noodles, Black Bean Soup, Macho Nacho, Seafood Paella, Curried Chicken Pitas, Wilted Spinach with Attitude, Honey I Ate the Chocolate Bread Pudding, and All Mixed Up Margaritas.People who don't know how to cook or don't want to cook will appreciate the Bachelor Quickies section, featuring frozen and ready-to-heat selections that are matched to create complete and impressive menus. With full-color photographs for every recipe, wine suggestions, humorous personal stories, and cooking tips sprinkled throughout, this collection is a must for any Trader Joe's fan.

Hello, Cupcake: Irresistibly Playful Creations Anyone Can Make Review

Hello, Cupcake: Irresistibly Playful Creations Anyone Can Make
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SUGAR ALERT: I will be fawning and tripping all over in talking about this book!
If you are a closet cake-decorator but you don't feel up in the ranks of Duff or Colette or Martha, then grab this book and hold on to your socks, because Karen Tack and Alan Richardson will take you on a fabulous decorating ride!!
Wow, wow, and WOW! This veritable encyclopedia of "mini-cake" decorating is so fun and easy that there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to lament "they can't". With the use of food items found anywhere, you will be making the cutest, and most impressive cupcake creations you can possibly think of, and Karen and Alan will make you legendary to boot!
This team of talent has come up with extremely amazing and irresistable cupcakes like giraffes, Van Gogh paintings, clowns, aquariums, etc that will all fit on top of a little poof of cake batter.
The book size itself is large with big print which lends itself to the purpose of the photographic detail that is so big, sharp, and clear, there is no doubt or question on sequence or step. Karen Tack is the recipe creator and food stylist and Alan Richardson is the text writer and photographer; both are brilliant and incredibly talented individuals, so as a team, they are a match made in cupcake heaven.
The Acknowledgement page was itself fun and relaxed, not something plodded through; you can tell it was done with real gratitude and thought, which is part of the overall charm of how this book was put together.
There are 8 chapters between the "Introduction" and the "Sources"; got those socks gripped?........
INTRODUCTION: Your text page begins the journey, and right after, you are given an impressive section of pages that visually, and with text, show you how you will make the many creations through the use of candies, cookies, and types of sugars.
CUPCAKING TECHNIQUES: This was invaluable for those who are novice cupcake bakers or wannabe's. Hints and instructions on methods for pouring batter, spreading frosting, making frosting, and melting chocolate for designs, are shown in close detail. They show you how to make "fur" for the lion cupcakes and "leaves" for flowers. This is followed by methods used to draw "bugs", people faces, and hairstyles by using melted chocolate and candies. The next section shows how you will literally build up these creations, like the bowling pin cupcakes, so instruction is shown in simple and fascinating detail. Part of the more complex designs require a grouping of cupcakes, like "corn on the cob", "rabbits in a hole", or the "alligator", and you are given an idea of the schematics involved in getting them just right!
APRIL FOOL'S THEME:
Corn on the Cob
Bagels and Lox
Buttered Popcorn
TV Dinner ("peas & carrots", "drumsticks", & "mashed potato" cupcakes!)
Spaghetti and Meatballs
Box of Chocolates
Van Gogh's "Starry Night" in frosting (he'd love it!)

Party Princess (any little girl will just LOVE these!)
Slumber Party
Big Birthday Party

Vegan on the Cheap: Great Recipes and Simple Strategies that Save You Time and Money Review

Vegan on the Cheap: Great Recipes and Simple Strategies that Save You Time and Money
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The recipes in this book really are inexpensive to make. The book starts with about 28 pages of advice on ways to save money on food, and the rest of the book is devoted to recipes. I have tried the following so far, and thought they were great:
Cheezee sauce (excellent!)
Comfort loaf (Best vegan 'meatloaf' I've ever had)
Baked ziti (Delicious; I was amazed at how well the tofu worked in this dish)
Mexican rice and bean bake (Today's dinner - also outstanding)
The one caveat I have about the book is that some of the directions appear to be incomplete. This is okay for experienced cooks that can just figure out how to make it work. But someone with less experience and know-how could possibly end up wasting money by trying recipes that won't work.
For example, the Cheezee sauce recipe tells you to combine some ingredients in a saucepan. Then it says, "Turn the heat on medium and whisk in the soy milk. Cook, stirring, until the sauce thickens, about 1 minute." This makes it sound like you are supposed to just turn on the heat and have the pot on the stove for 1 minute. What you have to do is bring the mixture to boiling and then cook it for about 1 minute longer. So, the author forgot to mention the part about bringing the mixture to boiling. If you've never made a sauce this way before, you might throw it out if you follow the directions, because it's not useful in that watery state.
In the Mexican rice and bean bake, the recipe involves partially cooking some rice on the stovetop, and then putting it in the oven to cook the rest of the way. I think that there is something missing from the directions there as well, because I cooked and baked as directed, and had to double my baking time to cook the rice completely. (And, no, there is nothing wrong with my oven.) I presume that it was supposed to be cooked a little longer on the stovetop first, but again, the directions just indicated that you were to return the stovetop mixture to boiling, and then dump it in the pan to go into the oven. I suspect you were supposed to boil it for a little while on the stovetop first.
The food tastes great. She really does a lot with inexpensive ingredients. (One of the things I liked about this cookbook was that she only asks you to have a few non-standard ingredients on hand, unlike most vegan cookbooks, which expect that you are secretly running an international grocery store in your kitchen.) But considering I tried 4 recipes so far, and 2 of them had inaccurate directions, I'm a little concerned about the rest of the book. I'll just have to remember to be more vigilant when making these recipes.
I think this is particularly important for this book, because I am sure that this book was geared, in part, to the 'starving students' and other new vegans who want to eat vegan on a budget. In general, younger people have less cooking experience and therefore will be less likely to know how to 'fix' these recipes. Also, I have a few of Robertson's other cookbooks, and haven't ever come across this problem so far. So, I'm disappointed for that reason, too.
But, man, that Mexican rice and bean bake is REALLY good.

Amazing 7 Minute Meals: Recipes Ready in Less Than 7 Minutes Cooking Time (Get Real with Healthy Eating) Review

Amazing 7 Minute Meals: Recipes Ready in Less Than 7 Minutes Cooking Time (Get Real with Healthy Eating)

Reviewed by Kelli Glesige for Reader Views (7/06)
Yvonne Stephens has written a remarkable book that is just full of healthy and useful information. Included are more than 100 recipes which can be ready in less than seven minutes cooking time, and all the recipes are healthy and geared toward weight loss. Stephens has combined flavor combinations from around the world, as she is a world traveler and chef, and offers easy step-by-step guidelines and instructions to prepare the dishes.
"Amazing 7 Minute Meals" teaches the reader how to cook delicious, healthy meals quickly using the stir-fry technique. Stephens' philosophy is to eat all six nutrients while educating the reader about herbs, spices, hard and soft vegetables, and about the benefits of fresh wholesome food. The stir-fry method results in recipes that are cooked quickly which results in better taste and less destruction of nutrients, and slower digestion. Therefore, one should have fewer cravings, more balance of blood sugar levels, lower risks of cardiovascular diseases, and a healthy way to lose weight. Colorful pictures and step by step instructions make the learning easy and fun.
Author Stephens shows that eating healthy is much faster, easier and cheaper than one might initially think. Lack of time is a primary reason people will eat fast food or a frozen meal. Unfortunately, these are loaded with chemical preservatives, enriched flour and transfats. The good news is that lots of time need not be spent in the kitchen to prepare a tasty and nutritious meal. And all of the recipes included are quick and easy while appropriate for health conscious busy families, college students or young professionals.
"Amazing 7 Minute Meals" has all the sections of recipes featuring the most common meats, but also included are sections featuring veggies and desserts. Simply Mushroom Stir Fry caught my attention in the veggie section while Warm Apple Stir Fry in desserts looks to fit in particularly well on a crisp fall day. I intend to prepare both for my family, and I am sure the results will be positive.
Stephens teaches that pre-prepping food for a few meals ahead when one has the time will allow a meal to be fixed in only a few minutes when it is time to cook dinner. She also tells how to utilize pre-cut veggies to eliminate your prep-time completely.
I highly recommend "Amazing 7 Minute Meals" to everyone, for good health is essential to all. There is just so much useful information included that any recipe collection will be better off with this book on its shelf. The recipes are simple and easy to follow, so complicated and hard to find ingredients cannot be an excuse here. This collection is much more than simply a book of recipes. The information could change your life!

This book is a guide for individuals who are in pursuit of developing their own style of cooking. It contains great recipes, but the focus is on learning how to create your own dishes. I find many of my friends would love to cook, but either don't know where to begin or don't have the energy to follow complicated recipes. Out of a compulsion to alleviate this problem, the idea for this book was born. Cooking should be fun. Unfortunately, it's such a chore that we order in or go out when we would rather stay home. Besides being able to save money, the food you eat will be so much better. When you entertain, what a blast it will be to prepare great food for your friends, and not stress out or worry about it. This book will assist you in learning how to think about food, create your own original style of cooking, and make your work in the kitchen fun and exciting. What are you waiting for? Received the book this morning and have already prepared a soup and sandwich combo. Modified the "Good Luck Greens and Beans" into a soup by adding chicken stock and a little Parmesan. Could not resist the
"Croque Monsieur". Both were easy and very tasty just like the previous book's offerings. The I Love Trader Joe's Cookbook: 150 Delicious Recipes Using Only Foods from the World's Greatest Grocery Store Reading the recipes is like being in class...you can just hear her talking. Funny, informative and helpful regarding TJ's products; things in the pantry and, more importantly, what to hoard. I recommend this for newbies and established cooks. We can all use a fresh suggestion or shake up the rut we sometimes get into. This will make perfect Christmas/Holiday gifts for all. The photography is beautiful but I'm sure there will be some who think there is not enough of it. My original book is dog-eared; to me a sign of being well loved. It won't take long for this one to become the same!
Now, where's my Guinness for those cupcakes.....?

I can't believe I found this, and two others by the same person/company in a sale bin at Pamida! They are beautiful, informative cookbooks! If you happen to come along one or all 4 or 5 that have been printed, by all means, BUY THEM ALL!
